making beautiful
november - december 2005
musical by:
ryan scott oliver
directed by:
andrew shafer
music directed by:
brett ryback
with a score influenced in part by jason robert brown, william finn, and stephen sondheim, this evening of songs provided by new composer ryan scott oliver tells the stories of five larger-than-life twentysomethings exploring their fast changing lives:
an artist struggles with the pitfalls of her career;
a feisty vixen searches for love beyond her propensity for gay men;
a quirky catholic desperately attempts to reconcile his sex-life with his religion;
an adulterous playboy tries to reclaim his failed romance;
and an off-the-wall hypochondriac determines to escape the misery in her own mind.
"recommended!"
"...a superior life-lesson saga with insightful lyrics...making beautiful highlights oliver's promise!"
speaking in tongues
september - october 2005
written by:
andrew bovell
directed by:
stephen spinella
producers:
martha demson, alicia kay loggie, eric sims, & adrian sparks
cast:
irina bjorkland, amelia borella, brian george, hep jamieson, anna khaja, andrew lukich, aaron macpherson, dylan maddalena, & patrick tuttle
two married couples switch partners for the night. who will have the
courage for betrayal? who will walk away? a man weeps in the street
after realizing that his only love, long vanished, is alive and
well—and has completely forgotten him. a woman disappears on a lonely
road, late at night, leaving ominous last words on her absent husband’s
answering machine; at the same time, a man covered in blood comes home
and throws a woman’s shoe into an adjacent empty lot…
using
overlapping dialogue and simultaneous scenes, playwright andrew bovell
weaves these stories together in his psychological thriller speaking in tongues.
as the mystery of the woman’s disappearance is investigated, the
characters are forced to confront their own cruelty and isolation,
desperately reaching out to each other even in the midst of betrayal.
painfully honest and darkly comic, speaking in tongues is for all of us
who’ve done things we’re not proud of, and wished we could take them
back—even as we know we would do them again.
"....clever, provocative, elliptically resonant and wirterly" - the new york times
"....what andrew bovell does is to show us multifacted characters,
fragments of the whole and how we project ourselves to others.... a mix
of innovative drama and suspense.....(and) stylish wit...." - curtain up
