"go to every corner of pakistan and give the message that this is the time to sacrifice," iftikhar muhammad chaudhry, who is under virtual house arrest in islamabad, told lawyers by mobile phone today. "the day will come when you'll see the constitution supreme and no dictatorship for a long time." musharraf, who took power in a 1999 coup, said over the weekend he was declaring a state of emergency to respond to a growing islamic militant threat. he suspended the constitution, put a stranglehold on the media and granted sweeping powers to authorities to crush dissent. thousands of people have been rounded up and thrown in jail. scroll down for more... benazir bhutto arrives in islamabad former prime minister bhutto's supporters lined the streets a man walks on a blocked road leading towards the supreme court building in islamabad security forces and riot police were deployed in full force at the airport in islamabad on tuesday ahead of the arrival of former prime minister benazir bhutto, who came to the capital from karachi to meet with other political parties. hundreds of supporters and journalists waited outside the main gate, surrounded by troops, as she touched down. she has said she will not meet or negotiate with musharraf over a power-sharing deal. the pakistani government says it will hold a national election by mid-january. general pervez musharraf announced the election plans amid mounting international pressure - particularly from the united states - for imposing emergency rule and detaining lawyers and opposition politicians. u.s. president george w. bush, who values musharraf as an ally in his battle against al qaeda and the taliban, has called for a quick return to civilian rule and the release of hundreds of detainees rounded up since saturday. parliamentary elections were already scheduled for january but it was unclear whether they would go ahead after musharraf imposed martial law at the weekend. attorney general malik abdul qayyum told reuters: "it has been decided there would be no delay in the election and by november 15, these assemblies (national and provincial) will be dissolved and elections will be held within the next 60 days." it remains unclear when musharraf will lift emergency rule, which he imposed on saturday, allegedy to curb islamist violence and judicial interference. more than 350 people were arrested by riot police as lawyers attempted to stage anti-musharraf protests in lahore and karachi. about 2,000 lawyers congregated at the high court in lahore ignoring police warnings not to hold a rally. as riot police swung batons and fired tear-gas shells, the lawyers responded by throwing stones, beating police with tree branches and shouting, "go musharraf go!" witnesses said 250 lawyers were bundled into police vans. they joined another 500 opposition leaders and activists placed in custody as security forces across pakistan blockaded courts to quash the protests which have been banned. scroll down for more... protesters clash with police pakistani police detain a civil rights activists during a protest against emergency rule in islamabad read more... pakistan held back by bad governance and regional fighting taliban frees 211 pakistani troops after two months in captivity jemima khan's fears for ex-husband imran as bush tells musharraf: 'give up your uniform' britain has called for the restoration of "normal democratic and constitutional processes" in the country. downing street also confirmed that the uk was reviewing its aid programme to the country. prime minister gordon brown's spokesman said: "obviously we are considering the implications for our development and other assistance programme in pakistan." the department for international development is currently committed to providing £236 million in aid to pakistan over a three-year period. under an agreement signed by former prime minister tony blair in november 2006, this is scheduled to double to £480 million over the period from 2008 to 2011. u.s secretary of state condoleezza rice said america was also reviewing financial aid to pakistan which has totalled £5billion in the last five years. she said musharraf should leave his military post and that the country should move towards elections under the constitution. "we believe that the best path for pakistan is to quickly return to a constitutional path and then to hold elections," rice told a news conference during a visit to the west bank. "president musharraf has said that he will take off his uniform. that would be an important step." scroll down for more... power struggle: a woman tries to stop police in islamabad arresting a protester, right, against the state of emergency violence: a protester gets his hair tugged as policemen rough him up protesters clash with police general musharraf claims he is acting to stop a wave of islamist violence and judicial interference which is paralysing government. in a midnight tv address on saturday, musharraf said he was forced to act, warning: "i cannot allow this country to commit suicide." today he was forced to deny rumours that he was under arrest as popular dissent against emergency rule grew. rumours sweeping pakistan suggested he had been placed under house arrest by subordinates unhappy with his decision to impose emergency rule. "it is a joke of the highest order," musharraf said from the presidency building in islamabad where he had just met more than 80 foreign diplomats to explain his decision. scroll down for more general musharraf has declared a state of emergency in pakistan armed troops have secured important buildings and opposition leaders have been arrested former prime minister benazir bhutto described musharraf's actions as her country's "blackest day" and accused the military leader of imposing martial law. imran khan: 'in a safe house' javed hashmi, leader of exiled ex-premier nawaz sharif's party, spoke defiantly as he was arrested. "people will win. generals will lose," he said. "they have to surrender." sharif, exiled in saudi arabia, called on musharraf to step down: "the more he prolongs his misrule, pakistan moves towards anarchy." cricketing supremo imran khan, who set up his own movement for justice party in 1997, narrowly escaped house arrest under the noses of police guards sent to detain him and is now said to be at a safe house. analysts say miss bhutto's pakistan people's party has the popular backing to overthrow musharraf if she calls millions of supporters on to the streets in a show of defiance. miss bhutto, who survived an attempt on her life that left 145 dead last month, said she "could not accept martial law" and called for general musharraf to step down as head of the army. ali dayan hasan, of human rights watch, said: "bhutto is talking the talk, but will she walk the walk? she must agree to head a protest movement. if she just confines herself to saying things, she is really playing along with musharraf." benazir bhutto: described musharraf's actions as her 'blackest day' the crisis thwarted british and u.s. hopes of a smooth transition to a civilian democracy led by musharraf, an ally in the war on terror since 9/11. critics fear the general's action could destabilise the nuclear nation and embolden islamic militants. although he blamed rising extremism for the draconian emergency measures, which included suspending pakistan's constitution and blacking out all independent media, most observers believe his main motive was to prevent supreme court judges challenging his presidency. after months of bitter feuding, musharraf fired chief justice chaudhry and other supreme court judges who were set to rule that his october 6 re-election by parliament was unconstitutional. the general had pledged to relinquish his army fatigues to try to win a second five-year term in power. share this article: what is this?
