faye dunaway
january 2-20
as the co-star of the landmark bonnie and clyde, actress faye dunaway helped usher in a new golden era in american filmmaking, going on to appear in several of the greatest films of the 1970s. she made her film debut in his 1967 drama hurry sundown. still, dunaway was virtually unknown when she accepted the role of the notorious gangster bonnie parker opposite warren beatty in arthur penn's 1967 crime saga bonnie and clyde. the picture was an unqualified success, one of the most influential films of the era, and she had become a star seemingly overnight, earning a best actress oscar nomination for her sexy performance. dunaway's next major role cast her with steve mcqueen in 1968's the thomas crown affair, another major hit. subsequent to her appearance in richard lester's the three musketeers, was then cast in roman polanski's 1974 noir chinatown. the performance was her best since bonnie and clyde, scoring another academy award nomination, and the film itself remains a classic. the success of the towering inferno later that same year confirmed that dunaway's star power had returned in full, and she next co-starred with robert redford in the well-received thriller three days of the condor. in 1976, dunaway starred as an ambitious television executive in sidney lumet's scathing black comedy network, and on her third attempt she finally won an oscar. in 1999 she gave a nod to her screen past with a cameo appearance in the remake of the thomas crown affair.

robert duvall
january 1-31
one of hollywood's most distinguished, popular, and versatile actors, robert duvall possesses a rare gift for totally immersing himself in his roles. with his intense expressions and chiseled features, duvall frequently played troubled, lonely characters in such films as the chase (1966) during his early film career. whatever the role, however, he brought to it an almost tangible intensity tempered by an ability to make his characters real. though well-respected and popular, duvall largely eschewed the traditionally glitzy life of a hollywood star; at the same time, he worked with some of the greatest directors over the years. this included a long association with francis ford coppola, for whom he worked in two godfather movies (in 1972 and 1974) and apocalypse now (1979). for his portrayal of a has-been country singer in tender mercies — a role for which he composed and performed his own songs — duvall earned his first academy award for best actor. one of duvall's greatest personal triumphs was the production of 1997's the apostle, the powerful tale of a fallen southern preacher who finds redemption. directing and starring in the piece, duvall earned considerable acclaim, including another best actor oscar nomination. not many other actors could boast of playing such a diversity of characters. he took on two very different father roles in 1998, first in the asteroid extravaganza deep impact and then in robert altman's the gingerbread man. in 2003, kevin costner gave him an outstanding role in his old-fashioned western open range, and duvall responded with one of his most enjoyable performances

capucine
january 12-28
born to a middle-class french family, capucine was a top parisian fashion model by her mid-teens. she made her first film, jacques becker's rendezvous de julliet (1949), when she was sixteen, but international stardom would not come for another ten years, until producer charles k. feldman "discovered" her for the role of princess carolyne in the 1960 franz liszt biopic song without end. she was given a chance to display her comic know-how in the original 1964 the pink panther, and 20 years later was engaged to recreate her role for one of the post-peter sellers panther sequels. she also worked with joseph l. mankiewicz and federico fellini. except for a final appearance in a 1989 tv movie, capucine spent her last decade in seclusion in switzerland, and in 1990 she committed suicide.

dürrenmatt
january 2-5
the swiss author and dramatist started to study philosophy and german language and literature at the university of zurich in 1941, but dropped out after only one semester. he continued his studies at the university of bern. in 1943 he decided to become an author and stopped his academic career. at 26 years old, his first play, it is written, premiered to great controversy. the story of the play revolves around a battle between a sensation-craving cynic and a religious fanatic who takes scripture literally, all while the city they live in is under siege. his first major success was the play romulus the great. set in the year 476 a.d., the play explores the last days of the roman empire, presided over, and brought about by its last emperor. the politically active author gained fame largely due to his avant-garde dramas, philosophically deep crime novels, and often macabre satire. one of his leading sentences was: "a story is not finished, until it took the worst turn". dürrenmatt never took a political position, but represented a pragmatic philosophy of life.

haskell wexler 80
february 2 - 26
a chicago-born amateur filmmaker, haskell wexler broke into feature films in 1959 as a cinematographer on the documentary the savage eye (1960). wexler photographed the dramas the hoodlum priest (1961), angel baby (1961), the best man (1964), and later distinguished himself as cinematographer on the mike nichols drama who's afraid of virginia woolf? (1965). he worked on such high profile feature films as in the heat of the night (1967) and the thomas crown affair (1968), but also produced and directed the documentaries the bus and medium cool (1969), the latter a very successful and controversial look at the violence and strife surrounding the anti-war movement and the 1968 democratic national convention in chicago. during the 1980s, he also produced and directed the feature film latino (1985), which was highly critical of american policy in central america. wexler has won academy awards for his work in who's afraid of virginia woolf? and bound for glory (1976).

john schlesinger 80
february 16 - 27
london-born director john schlesinger worked steadily in both hollywood and britain in films, television, and on the stage. by exploring the complexities of human relationships, some of his films made it possible for later filmmakers to bring controversial subjects into the mainstream. his first two feature films, a kind of loving and billy liar, both received critical praise from the british academy. in 1965 he received international attention and his first oscar nomination for the drama darling about the london fashion scene during the mod '60s. after adapting the thomas hardy novel far from the maddening crowd, schlesinger made his first american film, midnight cowboy, starring jon voight and dustin hoffman. a compassionate story about friendship, it was also the first x-rated film to win the academy award for best picture. it also earned schlesinger his first oscar for best director. the next year, he was honored with the appointment of commander of the british empire by queen elizabeth ii. back in england, he earned his third oscar nomination for the psychological drama sunday, bloody sunday. starring glenda jackson, peter finch, and murray head, it was one of the first mainstream films to deal with homosexual themes with sensitivity and perception. during the '70s he continued directing stage productions in between his film work, eventually becoming the associate director of the national theatre in london. after a few meager successes with the psychological thriller marathon man and the war drama yanks, he moved over to television. he made his last film, the next best thing, starring madonna and rupert everett.

raf vallone 90
february 17 - 28
educated at the university of turin, raf vallone was a professional soccer player and jack-of-all-trades journalist before making a spectacular film acting debut in the neorealist classic bitter rice. while vallone has never wanted for roles of depth and meaning (giovanni in de sica's two women [1961], eddie carbone in arthur miller's a view from the bridge [1962]), some producers insist upon casting him only as a jet-setting playboy, nattily attired in the latest fashions, a beautiful girl on each arm. in addition, vallone has played so many unsavory characters like mario bello in 1964's harlow. the actor began curtailing his film work in 1990, not long after his well-rounded portrayal of cardinal lamberti in the godfather iii (1990).

francisco rabal 70
march 3-8
often regarded as one of the great leading men of spanish cinema, francisco rabal, in later life, matured into a respected character actor, whose outsized personality was a match for the men he portrayed onscreen. rabal's masculine good looks and easy charm quickly made him a popular leading man in spain, and he established himself in the international film community with his performance in luis buńuel's nazarin. rabal and buńuel became close friends, and rabal worked with the great director on two more films, viridiana and belle de jour. he later worked with michelangelo antonioni and jacques rivette, and in the '70s he dabbled in directing short films and writing poetry. the actor also became known for his outspoken nature, speaking out with iconoclastic good cheer on politics, religion, fame, and his profession when given the opportunity. as rabal grew older, his waist thickened and his hairline receded, but he seized the opportunity to play less glamorous and more challenging roles, and in 1984 his performance in los santos inocentes earned him best actor honors at the cannes film festival. in 2001, rabal received an award for lifetime achievement at the montreal film festival.

robert altman
march 3-30
during the 1970s, an era widely recognized as a renaissance period of american movie making, few directors enjoyed greater prominence than robert altman. an iconoclast whose work acutely attacked the conventions of genre filmmaking, altman both satirized and revitalized such warhorses as the western, the musical, and the crime drama, waging war on the sterile artifice of mainstream storytelling by creating a singularly sprawling and deliberately messy cinematic world bursting at the seams with sounds, images, characters, and plot lines. famed for his inventive brand of overlapping (and often improvisational) dialogue and an acknowledged master of modern camera technique, altman's quixotic career was uneven at best, yet he remains a pivotal figure of contemporary cinema, a true maverick responsible for many of the defining motion pictures of his times.

13rd titanic filmfestival
jean-pierre & luc dardenne
april 5-9
characterizing themselves as "one person with four eyes," belgian filmmakers luc dardenne and his older brother jean-pierre became one of the burgeoning stars of international art cinema in the 1990s with their rigorous dramas about life in the depressed industrial district around ličge on belgium's meuse river. filtering their political sensibilities through the lens of fiction, the dardennes explored the clash between personal morality and the requirements for survival in such searing, intimately shot works as la promesse (1996) and rosetta (1999).
premiere of the child by dardennes in hungary is on april 5 at 8.30 p.m. at the örökmozgó organized by the másképp alapítvány in the frame of the titanic filmfestival

jeanne moreau
april 14-29
one of the most recognizable faces of the french cinema, and also one of its most celebrated, jeanne moreau is a legend in her own right. combining off-kilter beauty with strong character, moreau came to embody forthright, devil-may-care sensuality in such films as jules and jim and the bride wore black. comparing her to some of her best-known colleagues, ginette vincendeau noted, "where brigitte bardot was sex and catherine deneuve elegance, moreau incarnated intellectual femininity."
jeanne moreau visits the 10th french film days and örökmozgó screens her most memorable movies tributing to her.

rossellini 100
may 1-27
when vittorio mussolini -- the dictator's movie-executive son (and a family friend) -- invited young rossellini to become a professional filmmaker, the 22-year-old dilettante jumped at the chance. assigned to direct a documentary about an italian hospital ship, he expanded the project into a fictional feature, la nava bianca, completed in 1940 and released the following year. in 1943 he began work on what many consider the first neorealist film, desiderio, in which, utilizing a hand-held camera, he attempted to approach his subject matter as a spectator rather than director. unfortunately, he was forced to drop the project, which would be completed by other, more conventional hands three years later. nonetheless, his brush with cinematic naturalism had left an impression, and, in 1945, he gained international fame with his stark, neorealist feature roma citta aperta/open city. this film so impressed hollywood producer david o. selznick that he invited rossellini to come to america to direct selznick's next ingrid bergman vehicle, but he remained in italy to co-write and direct paisa (1946) and germania anno zero (1947), two of the most influential works of their time. he finally met bergman and their mutual admiration quickly deepened into love. from 1949 through 1953, bergman worked for no other director but rossellini; the collaboration yielded one truly worthwhile film, stromboli (1949), and a series of self-indulgent, critical, and financial disasters. in 1959, rossellini restored his tattered reputation with his best film in years, general della rovere, which starred fellow director vittorio de sica. after completing vanina vanini in 1960, rossellini devoted his energies almost exclusively to tv films, turning out several respectful but non-reverential biographies of such historical figures as socrates, st. augustine, and king louis xiv.

10 years of danish dogma
june 1-14
dogma 95 is an avant-garde filmmaking movement started in 1995 by the danish directors lars von trier, thomas vinterberg, kristian levring, and søren kragh-jacobsen. the goal of the dogme collective is to purify filmmaking by refusing expensive and spectacular special effects, postproduction modifications and other gimmicks. the emphasis on purity forces the filmmakers to focus on the actual story and on the actors' performances. the audience may also be more engaged as they do not have overproduction to alienate them from the narrative, themes and mood. to this end, lars von trier and thomas vinterberg produced ten rules that any dogme film must conform to.

anthony mann 100
june 1-30
anthony mann forged a successful career helming genre pictures whose artistry often put hollywood's avowed "prestige" films to shame. though his crime movies and westerns never won mann prizes in his lifetime, he earned the adulation of the 1950s french critics and ensuing generations of cineastes for his integration of character insight and settings, as well as his skill with action. his early films were film noir movies such as desperate, railroaded!, t-men and raw deal. these movies are well-regarded today, but mann made his mark in the western genre, particularly for a cycle of collaborations with james stewart: winchester '73 (1950), bend of the river (1952), the naked spur (1953), the far country and the man from laramie (both 1955). mann's other famous western is man of the west (1958), starring gary cooper. he was respected for his acute visual sensitivity toward the american western landscape, effortlessly blending natural vistas with human drama. mann's dramas verged on classical tragedy, often showing anguished heroes attempting to resolve personal pain and confusion. in the 1960s, mann put aside westerns to concentrate on making two epics: el cid (1961) and the fall of the roman empire (1964), both intelligent and breathtaking examples of the epic form, once more demonstrating mann's talents for merging drama with landscape and architecture.

billy wilder 100
june 2-30
one of hollywood's most consistent and enduring filmmakers, billy wilder was also among its most daring. in feature after feature, in a wide variety of styles and genres, he explored the taboo subjects of the day with insight, wit, and trenchant cynicism; adultery, alcoholism, prostitution -- no topic was too controversial or too racy for wilder's films. unlike the majority of hollywood's other historically provocative voices, however, he was a major commercial success as well as a critical favorite, with two of his features garnering best picture oscars and numerous others honored with various academy nominations. sophisticated and acerbic, his intricate narratives, sparkling dialogue, and painterly visuals combined to illuminate the darker impulses of modern american society with rare brilliance.

luigi comencini 90
june 6-21
luigi comencini studied architecture in milan. during his student years, he organized and maintained a private cinema club with fellow movie enthusiasts (and future filmmakers) mario ferrari and albert lattuada. in 1937, the 21-year-old comencini directed his first film, the short subject la novelletta. he spent the war years writing movie criticism and working as a big-studio assistant director. for producer carlo ponti, comencini made his feature-film directorial bow with 1948's proibito rubare, which he also scripted. an advocate of the neorealist movement, comencini tempered such realism with solid commercialism. his best (and most profitable) efforts include the gina lollobrigida showcase bread, love and dreams (1953) and its sequels. in 1987, comencini was the recipient of a career achievement award from the venice festival.

stefania sandrelli
june 7-29
vivacious and sexy in an androgynous sort of way, popular italian actress stefania sandrelli was at her best starring as a lonely, sickly country woman trying to survive in a hostile post-wwii city in antonio pietrangeli's io la conoscevo bene (i knew her well) (1965). before launching her acting career in 1961 with il federale, sandrelli was a beauty queen. she got her break appearing as a teenaged seductress in pietro germi's divorzio all'italiana (divorce italian style) (1961). in the u.s., she is best known for appearing in several films of bernardo bertolucci, notably il conformista (the conformist) (1970). she has also worked with other prominent italian directors including ettore scola. she had great success in tinto brass' la chiave (the key) in 1984 and this led to her appearing in a few very racy films. since then sandrelli became a character actress.

john huston 100
an american film director who told stories about independent and adventurous men struggling for their individuality, john huston led such a life, himself. his hyper-masculine protagonists seemed to stem from his own youthful pursuits as a boxer, competitive horseman, calvary officer, and major in the u.s. army. married five times and divorced four (fourth wife ricki soma died in 1969), his reportedly bitter attitude toward women informed his female characters as either weak-willed prizes or seductive threats to manhood. nevertheless, huston's unconventional and rambling lifestyle led to some of the most celebrated american cinema, as well as the hub of three generations of oscar winners.

olivier assayas
in the '90s olivier assayas emerged as one of the key figures in the new generation of french filmmakers. as a former critic for cahiers du cinema and a cinephile, he makes his films both personal and referential to the works of directors that he adores. he collaborated on screenplays of two andré téchiné films, rendez-vous and le lieu du crime, and directed a few shorts before making his feature debut in 1986 with desordre. though his films enjoyed considerable critical acclaim in france and at international film festivals, his name was virtually unknown in english-speaking countries until the release of his 1996 film irma vep, a loving tribute both to louis feuillade and hong kong cinema.
he will visit the örökmozgó on september 23, saturday evening.

directly related to the expression of naturalism, neorealism was developed in italy during the second world war to give voice to the harsh realities of life in war-torn europe. it responded against the limitations of the film industry in italy including censorship, the lack of availability of production equipment, combined with poor quality film. the stark reality of the story-lines contended with everyday people in everyday settings accentuated by amateur performers and few editing techniques

neorealism film club
directly related to the expression of naturalism, neorealism was developed in italy during the second world war to give voice to the harsh realities of life in war-torn europe. it responded against the limitations of the film industry in italy including censorship, the lack of availability of production equipment, combined with poor quality film. the stark reality of the story-lines contended with everyday people in everyday settings accentuated by amateur performers and few editing techniques
every presentation in the club is divided into 2 parts: a short introduction is followed by the projection, analysis and discussion. series editor and moderator: miklós csejk
supported by: motion picture public foundation of hungary
