from senegal, joseph gaï ramaka’s karmen gei, a lavish and outrageously sexy music-and-dance spectacular based on bizet’s carmen; from germany, sven taddicken’s my brother the vampire, a sweet, goofy comedy about three young siblings struggling with grown-up urges; and, from new zealand, christine jeff’s languid rain, about a mother and daughter competing for the affections of a handsome photographer. carl spence, director of programming, said, “we’re excited by the broad range of films from many countries. we are equally excited by the addition of our other side of midnight movies, which expands and develops new festival audiences.” this collection of edgy and in-your-face movies includes ichi the killer, a gonzo gangland gross-out epic directed by takashi miike, shinsuke sato’s princess blade, a potent combination of high-tech special effects and the high-flying artistry of action choreographer donnie yen (iron monkey) set in a futuristic japan, may, a frankenstein/argento/polanski homage by lucky mckee and stacy peralta’s dogtown and z-boys, an adrenaline-inducing plunge into skatepunk culture, narrated by sean penn. in remembrance of italian master director pier paolo pasolini in what would have been the year of his eightieth birthday the festival will screen pier paola pasolini, a portrait of the multifaceted artist compiled by actress laura betti and pasolini’s teorema (1968), starring betti in the performance which won her a golden lion at the venice film festival. always on the lookout for archival treasures, this year’s selection includes where are my children?, the still-powerful 1916 film about abortion and women’s rights by one of the first american female directors, lois weber, to be presented by mel novikoff award recipient david francis. the festival has been hosting unique events that bring together archival cinema and contemporary musicians for years, and 2002 is no exception. superchunk and kinogasa: a page of madness combines a new score composed and performed live by indie rock gods superchunk for the little-seen caligari-esque japanese avant-garde silent film, a page of madness, directed by teinosuke kinugasa in 1926. another film from the archives is bill morrison’s majestic decasia, an experimental collage film composed of rapturous decomposing film images, propelled by a cacophonous score by bang on a can’s founder michael gordon. in addition to the live superchunk event, the festival boasts several other music-related films, including liliana mazure and aaron vega’s van van, let’s party, a knockout portrait of cuba’s mega-popular salsa dance band los van van; sound of brazil, in which mika kaurismäki (brother of aki) takes a musical journey through brazil, gloriously displaying its many styles of music; ravi shankar: between two worlds, mark kidel’s portrait of the world-renowned indian musician; and tribute, directed by rich fox and kris curry, a loving and hilarious peek into the world of bands that impersonate the likes of queen and the monkees. the festival brings together the best of contemporary french cinema, including andre téchiné’s far away, a tangiers-set character study about illegal immigration, drug smuggling and tested friendship; the newest from controversial catherine breillat, brief crossing, an elegant chamber piece about a brief romance between a thirtysomething brit and a 16-year-old french lad during an overnight ferry crossing; eric rohmer’s plunge into the french revolution, the lady and the duke, in which he experiments with digital imaging to recreate the period; a lively look into the african world in paris, alain gomis’s l’afrance; josée dayan’s portrait of the extraordinary writer and intellectual marguerite duras, cet amour-la, with icon jeanne moreau playing duras; sandrine ray’s vivante, in which a young parisian photographer plunges into an underworld of sex, drugs and nightclubs as a way to cope with the after-effects of a brutal attack; and the unnerving time out by laurent cantet, about a laid-off worker who pretends to his family that he is still employed. reflecting a surge of fresh new voices as well as work by established artists, latin american and spanish films are front and center at the festival this year, with mexican master and festival regular arturo ripstein (winner of the akira kurosawa award in 1999) returning with the ruination of men, a pitch-black comedy about the botched murder of an amateur baseball player; patricio guzman’s powerful examination of spain’s attempts to prosecute the former dictator in the pinochet case; orlando rojas’s comic tale from cuba, nights of constantinopole, about a family in revolt against their tyrannical matriarch; exiled chilean director luis r. vera’s bastards in paradise, a  raw look at south american immigrants in stockholm, sweden; from spain, el bola, about a young boy who helps a friend overcome a violent home life; and 25 watts, the debut film by juan pablo rebella and pablo stoll, a loopy, droll slacker comedy about a trio of aimless guys in uruguay.   asian films make up a big part of the program this year, partly due to the influence of guest programmer roger garcia, a former director of the hong kong international film festival and an asian cinema expert. hong kong will be represented by the work of several well-known filmmakers—not to mention some of the biggest stars in both the music and movie worlds—including johnnie to and wa ka-fai (fulltime killer, a hyperactive thriller about the rivalry between a pair of world-class assassins, starring cantopop-and-movie superstar andy lau), ann hui (july rhapsody, a touching melodrama starring two of hong kong’s best-loved actors in long-awaited comebacks, jackie cheung and anita mui) and andrew lau (dance of a dream, starring, again, anita mui and andy lau in hong kong’s buoyant answer to strictly ballroom). the slate also boasts a choice selection of some of the best new films from japan from new filmmakers like isao yukisada (go, about the troubles of a korean-born teenager living in japan) and kiseki hamada (somewhere on earth, a sweet romance based on a best-selling youth-cult story); nascent masters like hirokazu kore-eda (distance, a melancholy tale about the aftermath of a terrorist attack on tokyo that killed and injured thousands), shunji iwai (all about lily chou-chou, in which troubled teens find sanctuary in the music and internet fan site of a pop diva), shinobu yaguchi (waterboys, in which a gaggle of boys don goggles and get in touch with their inner esther williams as synchronized swimmers, by the codirector of the kooky one piece!), and mayhem maestro takashi miike (ichi the killer, a gonzo gangland gross-out epic about dueling yakuza hit men, starring japanese indie superstar tadanobu asano); and long-established geniuses like 76-year-old shohei imamura (warm water under a red bridge, starring mainstay koji yakusho as a dissipated salaryman who falls in love with a woman with an oceanic sexual appetite), 61-year-old hayao miyazaki (the north american premiere of spirited away, a  fabulous ghost-infested animated adventure—the first animated film ever to win the berlin film festival’s golden lion award—that may be the pinnacle of animated fantasy), and 79-year-old seijun suzuki (pistol opera,  a completely nutty sort-of sequel to his eccentric 1967 yakuza masterpiece, branded to kill). from mainland china, the festival will be bringing the latest from zhang yimou, happy times, ning ying’s i love beijing and wang guangli’s go for broke. from taiwan comes hou hsao-hsien’s millenium mambo. from thailand comes tyro oxide pang’s thriller one take only. south korea is represented by three films: the action-adventure epic musa the warrior, directed by kim sung-su, song hye-sung’s melodrama failan and hur jin-ho’s delicate romance one fine spring day. the renowned iranian poet forough farrokhzad, who died at the age of 33, is the subject of an in-progress documentary trilogy. the first two parts of this trilogy, the green cold and the mirror of the soul, both directed by nasser saffarian, will receive their premieres, international and world respectively, at the festival. other films from iran are abolfazl jalili’s delberan, about a 14-year-old refugee from the afghan civil war working at a border-town truck stop and secret ballot, in which newcomer babak payami gives the iranian election process a farcical working over. the 45th san francisco international film festival is presented by the san francisco film society, a nonprofit arts organization whose goal is to lead in expanding the knowledge and appreciation of international film art and its artists by showcasing the most compelling, thought-provoking international films, special tributes and major restorations, and today’s brightest stars. the 45th san francisco international film festival runs april 18–may 2, 2002 at the amc kabuki 8 theatres, the castro theatre, the pacific film archive in berkeley and landmark’s park theatre in menlo park. advance ticket packages and festival passes go on sale beginning march 6. individual tickets for san francisco film society members will be available beginning march 27, with individual tickets for the general public available starting april 2. to purchase tickets and for ticket information call 925.275.9490 or log on to www.sffs.org. the main box office, located in the atrium of the amc kabuki 8 theatres at 1881 post street will open for film society members on march 27 and for the general public on april 2. there will also be a satellite box office at crocker galleria, 50 post street, second floor, opening on april 2. for up-to-date festival information, call 415.931.film.
