common grease trap problems
#1
problem
problem: grease trap is overflowing,
but the restrooms are working.
cause: the trap exit pipe is clogged up
between the exit and the restroom connection.
solution: unclog the pipe from the trap
exit to the restroom connections.
#2 problem
problem: grease trap is overflowing into
the parking lot, and the restrooms are not working. cause:
the line from the restroom connection to the city line is
clogged up. solution: the city may have
problems at the city connection manway, or the line from the
restroom connection to the city line needs to be unclogged.
#3 problem
problem: a floor drain is clogged up, but
all other drains work fine. cause: the
clog is located at that drain area only. solution:
unclog directly at that drain.
#4 problem
problem: all floor drains back up when
the sink is draining, or the sink and drains are not working.
cause: the floor drain nearest the rear of
the store or grease trap is clogged up and holding up all
drains, or the main line from the building to the grease trap
is clogged. solution: in most cases,
only the last floor drain needs to be unclogged. if that does
not resolve the problem, unclog the main drain line out to
the trap connection.
#5 problem
problem: the dishwasher is overflowing
onto the floor. cause: the dishwasher
pumps water to discharge. if the exit pipe has any type of
restriction it will not handle the flow rate, thus causing
overflow. solution: pipe must be properly
unclogged of all restrictions.
#6 problem
problem: everything in the store works
except the restrooms. cause: clog is
between the building and the connection the the main sewer
line outside. solution: unclog the line
from the restroom to the main sewer line.
#7 problem
problem: steam table floor drain overflows
when draining steam table. cause: after
draining the steam table, you must wash with warm water to
keep the drain clean. solution: unclog
the drain and followup with daily cleaning recommendations.
#8 problem
problem: large grease spills on the floor.
cause: if possible, let grease chill, or
add ice. scoop up grease and place in trash. solution:
wash down the area when finished. rinse drains with hot water
to clean pipes to trap.
#9 problem
problem: floor drains clog up often.
cause: debris and spills are being swept
into the floor drains. floor drain covers may be missing.
floor drains were designed for accidental spills only.
solution: replace any missing drain covers,
or replace all covers with ones with smaller holes. if you
must sweep into the drains, you must rinse the drain with
hot water for one minute or more to clear the drain all the
way to the trap.
#10 problem
problem: store has a garbage disposal
in the sink.
cause: food from the garbage disposal will
clog drains and take up the water center in your grease
trap. the water center is very important to the proper functioning
of the trap. food will dehydrate your trap, thus causing
grease to go out exit pipe of trap and clog all drains.
the dishwasher may also add to this type of problem if dishes
are not properly emptied before placing into the dishwasher.
solution: have the garbage disposal taken
out of the sink in the restaurant, especially if the restaurant
is on a septic system (see septicservicepros.com.)

*being able to view your
inlet and exit pipe inside grease trap is a must for your
pumper to maintain pipe condition. t-baffels on inlet and
outlet (90-bends are a no-no) extended 60% down into tank
depth is very important.
*having a good plumber make these corrections
will save youa lot of additional plumber service fees.
