it's time to tighten up that leaky faucet. you know the one; it's probably been keeping you up at night. it may not seem like it, but if your taps don't close properly, you're wasting a huge amount of water. consider the following:
if your tap leaks even in the slightest say a drop a second, for example it can fill a large coffee mug in ten minutes. at that rate, your one tap wastes approximately 3000 gallons of carefully purified drinking water each year. you can probably multiply that figure by at least ten for a tap that leaks a steady stream.
if your house has more than one leaky faucet, of course, you'll need to double, or triple, or quadruple the figure. it's not a difficult procedure, and fixing a leaky faucet means you're helping to preserve the planet's most precious resource.
generally speaking, a faucet leaks when the rubber washer inside has deteriorated. taking the tap apart, replacing the washer, and putting everything together again tightly will probably fix the problem. it only takes a few minutes, and the washer costs almost nothing. you'll have to shut off the water supply first. for more detailed instructions, consult a how-to manual or website.
in the meantime, place a large pot or bucket under your tap overnight to catch the water. in the morning, you'll have saved enough drinking water to make the coffee, water the plants, and fill your dog's bowl maybe even more.
