klaudia and braylee riddle welcomed their little brother, j. chad quintin riddle, on march 7, 2006. he weighed seven pounds, 12 ounces and was 20 inches long. he is a sweet little boy. quintin’s parents are jc and sarah riddle of cedar city. grandparents are robert and kim overson, bobette jensen, all of cedar city; and chad and amber riddle of st. george.

garret tex hoyt and chandler kelly hoyt were born jan. 27. garret weighed six pounds, eight ounces. chandler weighed five pounds, nine ounces. their parents are kelly and lisa hoyt of santaquin, utah. proud grandparents are tex and susan asay of cedar city and clorene hoyt of fredonia, ariz.

alec higgins rimmasch ii turned one year old on april 5. he loves to talk on the phone and play with trucks. proud parents are alec jr. and cami rimmasch. “we love you, lil’ alec.”
proclamation
cedar city mayor gerald r. sherratt issued a proclamation last wednesday announcing that “relay for life weekend” will take place in conjunction with the american cancer society relay for life, which will be april 21-22 at the suu coliseum.pictured from left to right are: reba rocket daniel (relay publicity chair), deena marchal (survivorship chair), doug wells (american cancer society), mary fulmer (cancer survivor) and mark barton (relay team coordinator).all monies generated from this event will remain in iron county for cancer research and cancer patient assistance. teams of 8-15 participants can still sign up and find sponsors for the overnight event, and luminaries in honor of survivors or in memory of lost loved ones can be purchased by calling dina nielson, chair for this year’s relay, at 586-7735.

joni bowman and shad munford will be married saturday, april 8, 2006. they will be honored at a reception that evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the kanarraville lds chapel.the bride is a daughter of spence and kay bowman, and the groom is a son of clyde and diana munford. the couple will make their home in kanarraville.
vertical challenge
congratulations to those who braved the snow storm on march 11 to ski and board at the american cancer society vertical challenge event at brian head resort. participants braved white out conditions to rack up vertical feet, raise funds for cancer research and recognize cancer survivors. the event will take place again next year. a special thank you to ron burgess from brian head resort, quentin morrisette from copper chase condominiums and volunteers who helped at the event.event winners were as follows:individual: most funds raised-cory roy.team: most funds raised- brian head ski team, quentin morrisette, captain.individual: most vertical feet skied-quentin morrisette.individual: second place most vertical feet skied-chase halterman.team: most vertical feet skied-parowan team, donna.

beth jolley cary
beth jolley cary passed away march 25, 2006, in sandy, utah. she was born the second child of bertha and nephi jolley on dec. 13, 1921, in paragonah. cedar city was where her family called home, and where she attended schools and worked as a nurse’s aide. she also worked a short time in salt lake city before moving to southern california during world war ii.she became one of the first women employed at firestone tire and rubber, where she worked to support the world war ii war effort and was proud to be one of the “rosie the riveters.” it was there that she met her husband, willard h. cary. they were married on june 30, 1945, later sealed in the los angeles lds temple. they made their home in compton, calif., where their three children were born.after 20 short years of marriage, willard passed away, making beth a young widow with three children to continue raising. she was strengthened by the loving support of both the cary and jolley families. beth worked hard to provide a wonderful life for her grateful children. she worked and lived in orange county for over 30 years.beth considered herself “jolley by name, jolly by nature,” and made friends easily. her greatest joy was in staying connected to both family and friends, no matter the distance. she cherished her associations with many friends from clubs, organizations, and church associations for over 60 years. she was an active member of the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints, and humbly and faithfully served.for the last three years she enjoyed her associations at south towne ranch in sandy, utah. beth will be remembered as a playful, strong, stalwart, faithful, cherished wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.beth’s greatest joy was her family. she is survived by her children: bonnie (gordon) stofer of pratt, kansas; joanne (steve) thomas of sandy, utah; and brad (mishelle) cary of rancho santa margarita, calif.; eight grandchildren: eric (misty) stofer, chris (kim) stofer, jeff (valarie) thomas, chad (hillary) thomas, katie thomas, marcy thomas, kristie (mark) fingerhut, and bryan cary; four great-grandchildren, gage, adisyn, kyson and alexa; two sisters: orissa (garn) hirschi and edith hunter and many loving sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, willard h. cary, brothers milt jolley, cluff jolley, and sisters hertha jolley and doris jolley clausen.the family would like to express appreciation to all the medical staff and caregivers who have attended to beth’s needs during recent months.services were saturday, april 1 at 11 a.m. at the southern utah mortuary in cedar city. a viewing took place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. that day. interment was at the cedar city cemetery.

john riley rutherford, 59, rode out of this life on his harley on march 24, 2006, in cedar city.he was born october 16, 1946, in st. charles, va., to john elmer and bivian kirby rutherford. riley and his wife, joann, moved to cedar city in may 1991 and started riley plumbing.riley is survived by his wife, joann, beanie the cat and numerous close and special friends. a memorial gathering took place in riley’s honor on april 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the main street city park.in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to hooked on fishin’. contact mike corcoran at 435-531-1559 for further information. arrangements made through swindlehurst funeral home cedar city.

frank enerson lovell, age 84, passed away on march 28, 2006, in cedar city, utah. he was born on january 6, 1922 in lucas, iowa to james elmer and maude mae lane lovell. he married june kehn on april 11, 1942 in princeton, missouri. frank is preceded in death by his wife, june lovell.frank graduated from dallas iowa high school, then joined the army on may 15, 1945, he is a veteran of world war ii.frank is survived by his daughter rosie (bud) potter holt of cedar city, utah, and is also survived by his son ron lovell of corona california. he is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, and also his brother melvin (ginny) lovell of des moines, iowa.funeral services were held on monday april 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at southern utah mortuary. visitations were held on sunday april 2, 2006 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and also on monday april 3, 2006 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary. interment was in the cedar city cemetery, online condolences can be sent through our website at www.sumfamily.com

viola bell (slack) bauer, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away march 31, 2006 at the age of 96.she was born september 19, 1909, in toquerville, washington county, utah. she was the daughter of vernon franklin slack and enora elizabeth allen. she had four sisters, hannah, iva, elizabeth and ada. she had seven brothers, vernon, olvier, fredrick, calvin, merlin clive, edgar and morgan. all have preceded her in death.she spent her youth growing up in toquerville with frequent visits to woolsey’s ranch west of cedar city. as she entered her teen years, the family moved permanently to cedar city where she was to spend the rest of her life.she married ernest washington bauer on april 7, 1928. later that year they were sealed in the st. george temple. ernest preceded her in death on december 17, 1995. she is survived by her children: allen e. (mary helen) bauer of north salt lake, jean (delton) bettridge of washington, aileen (tommy) givan of tayorsville and yvonne (nolan) ashman of st. george.viola loved her family, her extended family of nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law. she was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and member of the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints. viola was blessed with 55 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.she served her family, her relatives, her neighbors and her church. she had varied positions in the ward primary and relief society organizations. she loved the gospel, and worked faithfully in all her callings and tirelessly in her role as wife and mother. she was very independent in her later years and lived by herself, in her own home, until the time of her death.she was loved and respected by all who knew her. her needs in later years were met by her children, nieces and nephews who lived in the area, and iron county home health. she was always grateful for the love shown by her children and grandchildren throughout her life. mom, your wonderful example and love will always be with us.the family would like to express a special thanks to extended family, friends, iron county home health staff, her dependable candice and hanelle, dr. thinnes, and the odyssey hospice for their compassion, love and excellent service.services were wednesday, april 5, at 12 p.m. at southern utah mortuary. visitation took place tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. interment was at the cedar city cemetery.online condolences can be sent through the mortuary’s web site at www.sumfamily.com.

roberta naegle petty, age 75, passed away april 2, 2006, in cedar city. she was born nov. 26, 1930, in toquerville, utah, to jesse bringhurst and eden edith flesher naegle. she married rodeo petty on july 15, 1950, in pioche, nev. she is preceded in death by her husband, rodeo.after roberta and rodeo were married, they moved to henderson, nev., in 1955, where they raised their family. roberta always supported her family in everything that they did—whether it was hunting, rodeo, fishing, camping or baseball, she was always there. she was devoted to her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.roberta loved the outdoors. she loved to go hunting and camping with her family. she worked and also retired from the st. rose dominican hospital for 27 years. roberta was a member of the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints.she is survived by her children arnold roe petty (norma) of tridell, utah; steven ray petty (colleen) of liberty, utah; and also debra petty of henderson, nev. roberta is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. she is survived by one brother, larry jess naegle (virgina) of cedar city, and one sister, betty bess of henderson, nev. she is preceded in death by her parents, jesse and eden naegle, and her granddaughter, michelle thearse petty.services will take place thursday, april 6 at 11 a.m. at southern utah mortuary. visitation was wednesday, april 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will also take place thursday, april 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at southern utah mortuary. interment in the cedar city cemetery, under the direction of southern utah mortuary.online condolences can be sent through southern utah mortuary’s web site at www.sumfamily.com.
