ecw/smackdown thoughts
ecw thoughts
the inter-brand week continued on ecw with smackdown invading completely. it is acceptable to a degree on ecw and smackdown as an actually talent exchange has been agreed and signed (whereas on raw, the talent just seemed to be on the show for the sake of it) but i think ecw would benefit much more from actually having its own wrestlers facing the smackdown stars, rather than just borrowing the wrestlers for the show and having them fight their own.
the first match of the night was kane vs. mark henry. i had no interest in the match at all, but it should have been on smackdown rather than on ecw, which is short enough as it is without having time taken away for a total smackdown match.
the match itself was very typical of mark henry matches. it was better than seeing kali involved but not even kane can make the silverback look half decent in the ring. i guess the bonus here is that we didn’t have to watch the match on smackdown; though given the finish, i think it was pretty obvious that we would be getting a second helping later anyway as mark henry was disqualified for, apparently, picking up a chair and then finally hitting kane with it.
a much better idea saw the combination of jamie noble from smackdown, who is on fire at the minute, put in the ring against nunzio from ecw. we got a nice little match here and both wrestles came out looking good. nunzio is actually getting a lot of screen time on ecw at the moment, and he seems to be having some really good matches. he probably isn’t going far anytime soon and he may benefit from getting some screen time on smackdown as well. unfortunately, with the cruiserweight title gone now, he won’t be getting to great a push over there either.
another match sees kelly kelly take on layla as a result of the feud between miz and balls. i thought miz wasn’t allowing anything to happen with kelly as he had her contract? regardless of that, she and balls seem to have been paired together now anyway, and with brook released this week, it looks like he will be solely managed by layla, and we will get a straight up two-on-two feud between them and kelly/balls. the match itself showed nothing notable, with the main point being to sell the fact that kelly was beaten up by the glamazon over on raw, and then for balls to come out and save her afterwards. although it was quite funny seeing layla holding miz back, along with tazz commenting that it actually looked like she was physically able to pull him away.
nothing notable happens in another quick gap before another match. i might not like all the matches at times, but i am really starting to enjoy the fact that ecw is featuring around five matches in a 45 minutes show, especially when the main events are often last 10/15 minutes by themselves.
anyway, this particular match pitted elijah burke against shannon moore – who i actually forget which roster he belongs to. i like this pairing and i like burke against just about anyone at the minute. he has been up against punk a lot this year and there isn’t really room for any other feuds in ecw at the minute, so i would really like to see him, if anyone, be the one to get involved in a cross-brand feud with someone from smackdown. my personal preference would be someone like finley, or a baby face jamie noble.
some nice interaction backstage sees miz threaten morrison and tell him that he doesn’t think morrison will be able to defeat cm punk tonight. i smelt a run-in, and it wasn’t long before we found out as we headed straight to the main event title match.
the match itself was rather good. punk and morrison have had a very odd feud that hasn’t had that much substance. their matches have always been hard to predict in that some of them have been great and some of them have just been terrible. a lot of the time, the crowd plays into this and so does the actual build up that they receive. this particular match was built up well, the crowd enjoyed it, and the two involved tried their hardest to put on a good match in the ten minutes they had. it all worked out well and i even enjoyed the finish with miz interfering (though not really physically) and punk picking up the roll-up victory. this adds a lot of steam to the announced ecw title match at survivor series, which i am really looking forward to – if it is given some time, and if the live fans actually care about it.
smackdown thoughts
smackdown started with a bit of a shocker this week. that’s right; they have a pretty solid looking tag team division! now i am not huge fan of battle royals, and i am even less a fan of them when they are giving a title shot to someone, out of nowhere, and that title shot has to be on the same night, and it is almost a guarantee that nothing will come of it. however, i did enjoy this tag team battle royal, and i also think it may lead into something bigger. all the teams in the match (although i’m not totally sure where yang/moore came from) looked pretty good in there; even jesse and festus who didn’t last too long after everyone else ganged up on festus (if he doesn’t hear the end ring bell, does he ever snap out of it?). deuce and domino looked good again tonight, and they seem to be picking up a bit more momentum of late, but the major brothers pulled out the upset and obviously came out of the match looking the better of the teams, and getting a title shot as well. the major brothers have looked solid, if unspectacular, since they arrived in ecw, and last night they looked good in the battle royal as well. they impressed less later on, but when the focus was on them, they certainly took the ball and ran with it.
up next was a short match that made huge statement about the two ladies involved. both victoria and michelle mccool put on a hell of a match together. last week i said that there was nowhere for this little feud to go, but if the women start putting on matches like this, then there is still some life left. victoria is a brilliant wrestler and michelle looks to be coming along in strides. this program with victoria is obviously helping her out a lot on the ring, and that can only be a good thing for her – especially if she is looking to move over into the actual women’s division at some point.
finley and rey may have actually put on their best confrontation yet. their first ppv bout was good but was cut short and had no ending. the second match was explosive but seemed to finish just a little too quickly. for a television match, this rematch was timed very well and the two men involved did very well. without the no dq stipulations involved in a stretcher match, the two had to rely on actual wrestling ability and boy, did they show it off. rey was back at his best here and finley has not been off form since he came back to the ring two years ago. finleye picked up the win here as well, and with the two of them involved in the survivor tag match at the ppv, we may yet get to see a final showdown between these two at armageddon – especially with finley continuing the assault after the bell.
after some fun interaction between the two and vickie guerrero earlier, we get ecw champion cm punk, in his smackdown debut, taking on jamie noble in a match that, if they were on the same roster, i would love to see become a prelude to a major feud. noble is on a roll at the minute and his matches are becoming a great part of friday nights. he meshed very well here with cm punk and if the two had been given a little more time, this match could have been a hell of a lot of fun to watch. unfortunately for us, but good for the ecw title storyline, miz and morrison ended up interrupting the match and attack punk to cause the disqualification. punk showed his dominance and ended up coming out on top and then, oddly enough, noble attacked punk as well and ended up as the last man standing. i get the ecw involvement, but unless they are planning to have noble inserted into that title scene in the future (which i would have no problem in at all), i don’t see how it benefits anyone to have noble look so strong at the end – as his current “gimmick” is that he is basically never coming out on top.
after a lot of wrestling, what is pretty much our first non-wrestling segment occurs as batista comes out for a couple of minutes to say that he wants undertaker to beat kali tonight so that he is at his best come survivor series. this segment did not last long at all and was actually very effective, for a batista promo. he hyped up the match well, he put some more fuel on the fire with him and taker, and he made himself look fearless against the challenger. well done on all fronts. this just goes to show that you don’t need masses of charisma, or 20 minutes out of the show, to do a good job.
another interesting point was jbl; who ran away to “take a phone call” as batista arrived. obviously he was avoiding batista, but this whole thing is still piquing my interest as to what is actually going to happen with jbl.
after the amazing video tribute (from raw) for the fabulous moolah, we see the major brothers in action again as they face mvp and the returning matt hardy in the title shot that they earned at the beginning of the show. unfortunately for the young tag team, this very short bout was only used to put matt and mvp back on track after hardy’s injury. the champions won, via mvp, after around three minutes and then they argued a little to add a bit of animosity back into their own feud after they seemed to be becoming a bit too friendly with each other – for hated rivals anyway. this was a shame for the major’s, but they did look strong earlier, and it probably wont be too long before mvp and matt lose their titles, which can only be a good thing for the young challengers.
jbl and cole run through the survivor series card (it seriously needs some padding at the minute) before we head into our main event of the undertaker vs. great kali in a no holds barred match. this match started off very brightly, and i actually thought taker would pick up the amazingly quick win after a very early choke slam, but kali kicked out and then when we returned from a commercial break, he was back to dominating the dead man. i don’t really know why this was made to be no holds barred, as i don’t recall the action ever even spilling to the outside, nor was an illegal move used. despite that glitch, the two put on one of kali’s best matches yet and it resulted in a clean submission loss for the giant after taker broke his vice grip and caught him with the triangle choke. i liked this match and i liked the result. kali is going up against hornswoggle next week, so a loss to the dead man isn’t really going to hurt him, whereas taker needed to come out of this looking strong, and even though most fans dislike kali, he certainly made taker look good with the victory in this main event – especially after evading the vice grip and making the giant tap.
in all honesty i think this was one of the best smackdown’s i have seen in a very long time. the wrestling, even when kept short, was always at good level, or better. there were so few non-wrestling segments that i actually sat down and watched the entire show, and the couple of these that we did get, all came off very well. smackdown is a real opposite to raw right now, and i have to say that i am loving it!

tna genesis - who wins?
tna genesis – who wins?
at first glance, this column may seem like the typical ppv prediction column – but it isn’t. i have brief thoughts on who will win each match, but the majority of the column centres around who will really win, as a result of every match. this doesn’t necessarily mean the wrestler who takes the pin fall or submission in the match, but rather the man, or women, who will truly benefit most from the match, and where said match will lead their career, whether they win or lose.
the column is split up into three parts which are oh-so (not-) cleverly named as a part of the development of a project – which in this case is tna genesis 2007.

raw thoughts
random thoughts
despite all the rumours that the cruiserweight title was going to disappear, even when hornswoggle won the title, i didn’t believe it would actually happen. when hornswoggle lost the belt, vickie guerrero said that the cruisers would have to prove that they deserved the title. but now, it appears that the title has been removed from wwe.com, and possibly the wwe as a whole.
this is a joke. the cruiserweight division is still important to the wwe and why not have a title belt to go with it? it’s not like the division is being eradicated, as they are still having plenty of cruiserweight matches between ecw and smackdown, so what benefit are we all getting from taking away their title? read the rest of this entry »

the news week
i firstly want to give my commiserations to the family of the fabulous moolah who passed away this weekend. i was deeply saddened to hear about this. moolah can truly be considered to be a legend in the wrestling business – not just in the women’s division, but for wrestling as a whole. she was a true champion and is actually the longest reigning champion of all time. without moolah i truly believe there would have been no women’s divisions in wrestling at all today, and the whole concept of women wrestling, or being involved in wrestling, may have taken a lot longer to come about.
well it looks like kevin nash got his wish and is back on the active roster in tna. normally i wouldn’t be all that bothered about a past superstar returning to the ring, or even a superstar with a lack of talent being employed as usually they can draw based on name value, and they can have entertaining matches by being put in the ring with other superstars who are capable of putting on matches with anyone. a good example would be mark henry. he is terrible in the ring but if you put him again, say, hbk, i would be willing to bet that the match would at least be passable.

ecw/smackdown thoughts
ecw/smackdown thoughts
so ecw, on the sci-fi network had a halloween special. was anyone else at all disappointed that we didn’t see the return of the zombie? especially after, for some reason, the stars of resident evil extinction were added to the ecw roster list on wwe.com (anyone seen that film by the way? are they ever going to end one of those films with an actual ending!?).
anyway, the zombie did not appear and the only thing halloween-y about this show was that we saw the return of the boogeyman, in what was actually quite a funny segment, though only for seeing nunzio running around backstage with a load of kids, and then seeing those kids actually holding out their bags of sweets for boogey to put worms in them! now i don’t know, but i thought kids were supposed to be scared of this guy, not asking him if they can have some free worms!
elijah burke and jimmy wang yang had a very nice opening match. they meshed very well and between them they displayed a great variance in offence. i also found this match to be hilarious, but not at all down to either competitor (despite still finding yang as a redneck funny). the reason for this was tazz. not only did he seem to struggle with how to say yang’s name every single time, giving us several variants, but he also mentioned that yang was not in costume but that he always dressed like that. good stuff.

cyber sunday and beyond
hello, i am matthew flynn and i have written several columns before, some of which have been posted in forums or on different websites, but after a lengthy absence, i decided to start writing columns regularly. i am new to wrestlemag and hope to write regularly and about an abundance of subjects.
unfortunately i am a bit behind schedule at the minute and the first column that has made its way to this great site is not one of my best and may seem a bit rushed. bear with me though and you might find a few decent reads along the way. read the rest of this entry »

statement from ncw concerning confusion over ruckus and november 3rd
first off, i wish to apologize to gabe saposky and ring of honor for what was obviously a situation created because of what i am about to post here. but i wish to make clear that neither roh nor gabe saposky was at fault for any of this.
ok, if you want to see ruckus wrestle on november 3rd, you’ll be going to ring of honor in manhattan to see him. ruckus is not on my show. he is wrestling for ring of honor, not national championship wrestling.
here is the story, on october 14th i called ruckus to see if he was available on november 3rd. ruckus told me that day that he was. i even asked him if he was working for gabe (roh) that night and he said no. we discussed everything and as far as i was concerned, ruckus was clear to come wrestle for me in york, pennsylvania.
