ajax 0 - 1 arsenal: van persie grabs another trophy
0 guns august 5th, 2007
alright, so it’s only pre-season, but a win is a win is a win is a win. after robin van persie’s late strike denied jose antonio reyes the chance to lift the amsterdam trophy, arsene was quick to praise a nigh-“perfect” pre-season.
the performance itself was solid if not spectacular. the new-look back four were strong, with bacary sagna putting in a couple of particularly meaty challenges. up-front, robin van persie led the line superbly, ably supported by aleksandr hleb.
tomas rosicky looked a little rusty on the left, but behind him, gael clichy was at his outstanding best. his late burst to set-up van persie was particularly impressive.
when van persie recieved the ball in the area, i knew he’d score. deflection or no deflection, i knew he’d win the game for us. that says plenty about his ability and current form (not, as it might sound, my predilection for prediction).
arsene spoke afterwards about the possibility of incoming transfers:
i am not sleeping. however … the pre-season tells you that we have a big squad.
i’m glad he’s not sleeping, otherwise i would’ve had to have thrown a proverbial literal glass of water in his face and wake him up.
two transfer stories from spain: carlos vela has joined osasuna on loan, and we’ve reportedly rejected a £10m bid from valencia for gilberto. both good news - vela will gain some vital top-flight experience, whilst it’s essential that we retain gilberto’s experience.
i’m going to the community shield today. i’m not sure what to do. i suspect i’ll just cheer whenever anyone gets injured.

buongiorno amici miei. can anyone tell me when arsenal will have their channel like the mancs (mutv) and a host of italian clubs like inter, juventus, roma etc? is there anything regards this situation?
18.
bobbyp7 | august 5th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
guzeppe,
the channel is coming soon, as will liverpool tv too. i have a friend who is working on the contracts.
what do people think about diarra from chelski rumours. i personally don’t see why we need another central midfielder…ok he can play right back but we’re covered enough in that dept.
still think he needs some quality wide left.

quote:
i am a gooner and work for a sunday tabloid. our main backpage story is that arsenal have bid for porto’s portuguese left winger ricardo quaresma.
the story started in a daily portuguese sports paper, primeiro auroesport. they have close links to porto and say talks with the english club had started in may but only after the reyes sale arsenal were in a position to give a firm offer.
the players agent diogo flores refused to confirm the club but hinted quaresma may have played his last game for porto -
‘ricardo’s future is not decided but will close this week. many of europe’s champion clubs have bid and offers have been accepted. we have rejected the option of russia , germany and france as ricardo believes his future will be england or spain with the great players. ‘
the opening offer was £12 million and midfielder flamini. porto demanded £15 million which arsenal have now matched through a number of clauses. arsène wenger had wanted the deal done before robben had decided his future as both real madrid and chelsea are aware of quaresma.
a side story chelsea will not let diarra join arsenal, we have an interview with jose mourinho who closes the matter.

oh fuck, thats awesome, but i seriously doubt we will buy him after all arsenal fans are the most excitable and most dissapointed in the end.
21.
guzeppe | august 5th, 2007 at 1:16 pm
i will believe the quaresma signing when i see it. it is not aw style to buy someone popular. he will buy someone who is not and turn him into a popular player who will come for a few quid and leave for a good amount of money.
22.
guzeppe | august 5th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
would anyone like arda turan of galatasary? he is a left winger who can also play on the right or just behind the striker. he is only 20 years old and is highly skillful. he is the aw type signing. would not cost a lot of money…..around 6million and with the way aw coaches will be worth more than twice in a couple of years time. that said i would like to see moura kerlon aka the seal. he is only 19 years old and can play on both wings.
23.
naz | august 5th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
i think this quaresma deal will go through
ive been going on about it all that time and no one believed me
24.
bergkamp | august 5th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
well i’ll believe it when i see it. there’s been too much hype for it to actually happen.

nizami | august 5th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
i’m not an arsenal fan as such but have been priveleged to watch the football you lot play…. probably the best football i’ve ever seen in my lifetime…. i remember evan’s liverpool playing beautiful football probably the only thing i can remember that competes..
i just had a three points i wanted to make…
firstly, are your fans idiots, i can’t believe there are poeple doubting the ability of mr wenger, just remember the time before he came, long balls to hartson was your method of play, maybe the reasson is that the majority of the fans you picked up along the way to being great….and thus don’t remember those days…
secondly, i watched you win the amsterdam trophy, and some of the passages of play were stunning, eduardo looks like another very classy signing…
my final point was about the ajax, striker, huntelaar, i know everyone was raving about the classy snijder, but why have you not contemplated bidding for huntalaar, he seems the perfect player to lead the line for arsenal. he has great touch is fantastic in the air and links play beautifully, it will mean that players like rvp can get on with doing what they do best and not worry about having to ‘hold play up’… plus and i guess as important he’s 23/24 i believe…. i realise he’s hot property but don’t you have about 20mil to spend, with your net transfer budget and the loan you took out at the beginning of the transfer window…
finally, i believe arsene was trying to sign robinho all summer, has he finally accepted defeat on that one??
26.
tripping | august 5th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
there was another question at the end of that interview - sky reported asked whether wenger was in talks about a new contract. wenger said he would announce at the appropriate time. reporter pressed him and wenger then finally said, yes.
i didn’t doubt it, but it’s good to hear from the man himself.
27.
guzeppe | august 5th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
hey nizami, not all us afc fans are idiots……we do like aw and appreciate a lot what he has done. but i agree with some of your comments regarding the pre aw era. long ball ping pong. only the morons who have a very short memory or are support afc because of recent wins do not appreciate what sir aw has done for the club.
28.
flu0 | august 5th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
i think eduardo can play the target man role well, he’s got the physical strength which defies his small frame. we saw that yesterday when his dogged determination helped him to create a shot on goal out of nothing, and how he withheld possession even when 2 defenders were chomping at him.
29.
khunthol | august 5th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
i was pleased with the manner of our victory last night.
for so long it looked like another typical arsenal 06/07 season performance - dominate the game, but fail to apply the finishing touches and frustrate the hell out of us, before conceeding a late goal to lose the game. but, this time it was us who netted and won the game and that for me is a massive positive. it must give the team a great collective confidence.
i was much happier with the back 4 last night. jens had a few wobbles, but sagna, toure, gallas and clichy were all excellent.
a couple of signings perhaps and we look good.
i still don’t think we will win the league, but we may be able to contest it better than we have in the past 3 years.

arsenal played with a lot of heart yesterday. never allow themselves to be intimidated by ajax rough play. our young guns have a heart of lion. proud of them…
eduardo looks like a good signing. he is extremely strong for a rather small guy. hope to see more of him soon.
go gunner!
34.
guzeppe | august 5th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
i agree sam with your formation. but put rosicky on the left so that he can cut in, while clichy would overlap and and hug the line. expect a 4-4-2 with eduardo being the centre forward and rvp floating behind him. otherwise i agree with you. but i have a feeling that aw will pick flamini ahead of diaby since both diaby and fabregas are attack oriented. one must stay back to defend the midfield infront of the defence.

hmmmm….quaresma would be an excellent signing. i am not sure that it is going to happen though.
37.
sam | august 5th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
eduardo is too lightweight to play as centre forward . he would be muscled of the ball in the premiership.he is much better playing on the wings where he can cut in as well as run past fullbacks and his crossing ability is better than rosick’s.rosicky just cuts in which makes him predictable and he is more suited for a bergkamp type role where he can maximise his shooting prowess
38.
no offence | august 5th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
look, no offence, but that quaresma ’story’ is just that. a fucking fairy tale.
don’t even imagine there’s any substance to it.
if you wanna believe it, then fair enough, but don’t you think, it’d be all over the net on newsnow or whatever?
it was a hoax/blag/
39.
begeegs | august 5th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
sam - did you watch eduardo in any of the pre-season matches? he is quite tenacious and i doubt that he is going to be pushed around.
40.
no offence | august 5th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
eduardo is a poacher. sticking him on the wing is a waste of that talent.
rosicky should stick to the left wing where at the end of last season, he was showing signs that he could be effective there.
scored a few pires type goals too.
41.
sam | august 5th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
can anyone of you explain to me something regarding transfers? i have read somewhere that one tenth of the money goes to the player concerned. does that mean we have actually received around 14.4 millions from henry’s transfer. kindly explain

i didnt make this up ok we just need to wait at least someone has said that we are about to sign a player this tuesday i dont know how it could be
43.
enki | august 5th, 2007 at 3:05 pm
do not be too quick to underestimate eduardo. these guys grew up playing football on the beach and if one thing can make you strong in playing in sand. i remember ronaldihno shrugging john terry off the ball two years ago as an example.
44.
begeegs | august 5th, 2007 at 3:07 pm
everyone and their grandma speculates about the arsenal finances, but i think that at the end of the day, nobody really knows.
re: rosicky - he was on the left last night and was pretty dreadful. kept cutting over to the right/middle and surprise, we weren’t really very effective down the left, bar clichy - who was superb. when clichy is on the left, it improves significantly. i think that the rosicky experiement on the left side is doomed at the moment.
45.
sam | august 5th, 2007 at 3:09 pm
but rosicky will remain injured half the season, and if sir wengwe doesn’t opt for another winger then whom do u guys suggest should play up there.we look seriously streched on the left hand side. please i cant again bear to see denilson or diaby being employed on the wings as thir talent is wasted over thre . u can’t play viera or kaka on the wings
46.
sam | august 5th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
actually that was meant to be wenger
47.
begeegs | august 5th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
i think that wenger sees that hleb could also play on the left and he has done in the preseason and played well there. we do need a signing on the wings, no doubt. here is to hope that he will sign a left winger.
48.
sam | august 5th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
i absoulutely agree with you begeegs. though i think he is a fantastic player. he is more suited for a kaka-esque role that is a free roving role behind the forwardsrole
49.

vlcgooner | august 5th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
i don’t want to rumor-monger, because like many of you, i have discovered how useless it is with arsene. but my money is on drenthe being the signing for the left-side. a few weeks ago when the rumors were rife about him going to chelsea, he said something cryptic about ‘all ready knowing where he was going.’ he just seems to fit: he is young, and he is dutch– which means he is likely to adjust more quickly than say a queresma to the english game. but as i said, i don’t know shit.
52.
no offence | august 5th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
drenthe has just signed a new contract with feyenord apparently. that don’t mean he won’t leave, just that the transfer fee will be higher!
arnold; never said you did make that story up, just that it is a hoax and posting it on here will only get others giddy with excitement that we are gonna sign him, when we are not coz its bullshit.
53.
sam | august 5th, 2007 at 3:23 pm
i sincerely believe we will win something this season . as we had the toughest pre season which will definitely stand us in good stead in the forthcoming long season.
54.
vlcgooner | august 5th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
oh, by the way, there were three and not two players involved in the winning move last night. hleb made a beautiful pass out of the defense to clichy who just took off…well, you know the rest. i find hleb’s ability to keep control even when seemingly cornered back by the goal and find an outlet really amazing. (oh, and i am not new to the hleb bandwagon…i actually rated him highly last year, despite his poor end of the season and reticence to shoot.)
55.
vlcgooner | august 5th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
my bad…i just watched the play again, and it was not hleb…oh well. after two b.s. posts already today, i think i will knock off…
56.
sam | august 5th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
i live in india. so i was unable to throughly watch the pre season matches.i just want to know how do u guys think eboue fared in his new role
57.

apparently van persie has blasted freedie for his parting comments .serves the cunt right
58.

it wouldnt hurt to have some one like flamini for tough away matches in the premier league. its not about the skill always. its as much about the willingness to fight.
64.
nickthegooner | august 5th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
eduardo does look like he has in it to hold off defenders. he didnt get muscled off the ball and made a good chance yesterday. i hope we see him soon in the epl..

anil; fook me! that was a good post!
you feelin ok?
flamini is a fighter, we need to earn the right to play our fancy dan stuff. he gives us that aggressive edge we have lacked, particularly away from home. even gilberto has been guilty at times of disapearing in matches.
67.

united won on pens. van de sar saved 3 in a row.
68.
anil nair | august 5th, 2007 at 5:18 pm
but we need to add at least one world-class player or wenger should go out and be replaced with a manager with spirit and english like david moyes of everton or sam allardyce or steve coppell of reading. they will at least try and sign quality english player like alan smith who is stronger than any striker in the arsenal squad.
69.

70.
petit feuj | august 5th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
watching the charity shield today it really makes me laugh at the rose-tinters who reckon we ‘don’t need any wingers’. lol. today, watching the united-chelski match i saw malouda tear strips off the full-backs by providing width…i saw swp causing all sorts of trouble by tormenting evra…i saw malouda make a surging run and score a superb goal from wide-left. i saw ronaldo set up the first goal with a lovely one-touch on the wing and run at the chavs all day. but apparently ‘arsenal are different and we have our own special style of play that don’t need wingers’. oh yes the famous ’special way’. its been grand over the last 3 years in the league hasn’t it? lol. much rather have diaby and flim-flam on the wings. if any of you think this team can challenge for anything without at least 2 xtra signings then you’re mad.
71.
joe tucci | august 5th, 2007 at 5:25 pm
anil nair you really are a cunt. i think you should fuck off and follow cricket or sthg instead as you clearly know jack all about football. idiot.
72.

and david moyes is scottish you cunt….up your mum.
73.
guzeppe | august 5th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
alan smith stronger than any afc player. you must be joking or you need a headtest from a psychologist. he is stronger yes………….in his stubborn, ignorant mentality. if he is stronger surely af would have kept him. as for managers such as moyes etc please do not make us laugh. half the team would leave if any of that lot would come to manage afc. when aw leaves we need a winner with a good mentality. and he does not necessarily be capello, lippi, mourinho etc. someone like paul le guen, riykaard etc. who can build a team which plays nice football.
74.
vlcgooner | august 5th, 2007 at 5:29 pm
petit feuj, i have no idea who you are talking about. i am one of those ‘rose tinters’, but i think that we need a real winger on the left. so do the rest. maybe you should give people who disagree with you more credit. as for anil saying wenger should leave if he doesn’t get a proper english winger, that is the most ridiculous thing i have heard. wenger put this whole team together? would you prefer we play like bolton or everton. yaaawn. ugly style, boring, and the are never in the champions league. and which of those wingers– malouda or ronaldo– is english?
75.
winston | august 5th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
yesssssss its crap, anil.
i’m sorry.
76.
simmzy | august 5th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
we must sign someone this week. it’s no longer a matter of if or when, it’s gotta happen.
77.
petit feuj | august 5th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
wvlc gooner i do put you firmly in the rose-tinted camp. there is a category of bloggers who fall easily into the rose-tinted category. these are one-eyed bloggers with no objectivity on the shortcomings of the team. they think arsene wenger is almost god, that he is a master tacticisan. they think that finishing 4th is an achievemtn and they always, always, always have an excuse for our failure. they are incapable of seeing that finishin 12, 24 and 21 pts behind the leaders is a disgrace. they believe that we are the only club in europe that ‘does not need signings’ and think we ‘are better off without henry’. they also think we have a ‘world-class squad’ (never heard so much tosh in my life) and that rvp is the new saviour. they usually tend to think we are ‘only one signing away’ from sweeping up.
kings of this category are romford pele, topcat, samuel, avenedesorax and yes, you too vlcgooner.
78.
petit feuj | august 5th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
then there is the category of people who are just complete and utter cunts who know nothing about football: this category has one person only. his name is anil nair.
what a cock. anil mate. why do you carry on coming on this blog? all you do is talk shit. nobody ever listens to you or gives a fuck what you say. u contribute nothing to the discussion and you’ve admitted that you’ve never even been to highbury or emirates in your life. so you’re not evena real fan and nobody could care less if you fucked off. so why keep coming on here talking about a club you know nothing about? you are not an arsenal supporter. just a bored sad wanker who thinks he supports arsenal. you don’t even know he meaning of the word.
crying out loud you though david moyes was english and that alan smith is better than rvp.
tool.
79.
biltong alegria | august 5th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
simzy i wouldn’t get my opes up if i were you. after all, after aw released paddy we were all certain a top reinforcement was coming in. almost 3 years later we’ve won no trophies since he’s left, cannot compete in the league and are still waiting for our first world-class reinforcement…
80.
biltong alegria | august 5th, 2007 at 6:01 pm
i know i’m a negative ‘bedwetter’ but ani nair takes the biscuit. the guy thinks david moyes is a better manager than arsene wenger. as angry as i am at aw even i would never say suh shite…dickhead.

george costanza | august 5th, 2007 at 6:09 pm
good to see a bit more fight in the team, every ball contested even in a preseasoner - i like it.
this needs to be the attitude for every game now, no matter who we are playing. teams should have to earn the right to play by first winning the physical battle.
if we can scrap like this every match and win our 50-50’s then our football can do the talking and few teams will be able to live with us, hopefully anyway?
ajax were rough, but so fuck - its a mans game and i’d rather have a tough test like that than some poncey game in asia against a pub side ( is anyone watching porto v shanghai shenhua by the way, its a joke ffs ).
that game yesterday will stand us in good stead, and the way we refused to be bullied was very encouraging. the spirit seems good and everyone is playing for each other, without any egos or bigshots anymore.
we still need a wide player though, its painful watching rosicky on the lw and its not really fair on him. we need a proper leftie who can stretch teams and give us an outlet. lets hope something happens this week, it doesnthave to be a big name aslong as its a natural wide player to balance the side up, not sure who is left now though?
a special word for eduardo, the lad looks a class act and seems to have fitted in straight away. just as important he seems a tough cookie, and gets stuck in and seems strong for a small guy. he has impressed every time i’ve seen him, i just wish he would lurk in the box a bit more for the scrappy goals we never get?
i hope wenger doesnt see him as our lw solution though, as i thought he was bought as our poacher rather than a winger. if he does then we will have to buy a striker surely, as th’s goals will need replacing.
all in all positve stuff though, not just performances but it seems a new tough attitude has been formed with the loss of th and fl, and its good to see. lets get a winger in and give it a real go this year, the fans dont expect to win the league but at least lets be competetive and push the others all the way.
do we have enough, i’m not sure but the early signs are good although making it last over 38 games and other cups is another matter though isnt it? lets hope we see one or two new faces this week to give us a bit more depth, and we would be ready to go.
whatever happens though, we are back in business next weekend and have to back the team all the way, lets hope this is our year eh?

after watching the charity shield i agree with all of you who say we need a winger, or real striker. malouda was good and its ridiculous we missed hi, we had 5 million surplus from january window, plus 13 from summer window so theres no real excuse.
liverpool, spurs, chelsea have bought or got for free several players, we got just two, its not enough to win any major competition

rabbi savvy | august 5th, 2007 at 6:59 pm
the team desperately needs speeds. speed of thought or speed of movement. a fast winger gives us the later, bergkamp gives the former. the problem with our current pattern of play is that it does not disrupt the opposition formation. to disrupt you need someone to maraud through, either the middle(ala vieira) or along the wing (dare i say ala reyes). if you do not have that you need a good eye for a pass. get the ball delivered early. i think the speed of thought improves when all 3 of cesc, hleb and rosicky are playing well. we have only one marauder in eboue and half a one in diaby. if diaby improves and eboue can get his head in order thinks would be great. again midfield was not a problem last year. we scored only one goal less than chelsea and were 15 points off. and we had plenty of chances as well. with a small improvement in speed and finishing we can convert a lot more of those chances into clearer chances and more goals. we need to strengthen the defence. that is also a question of formation. people need to track back. we can all complain about gallas getting beaten in the air but the wide players need to track back and cut down on the crosses getting in. and lastly its more of a question of motivation as well. if we can get good results against top teams why do we drop so many points against not so good teams. is it just the rough tactics or that the players are complacent?
92.
guzeppe | august 5th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
a bit of both rabbi. rough tactics and complacency. but although i don’t want to jump on the bandwagon i daresay that last year there were many passengers in the team namley henry, lyungberg, baptista, aladiere whenever they played. they expected the others to play for them and for the final ball to go through them. yesterday anyone could see the difference in the game vs ajax. we fought, we scrapped and showed that we could win ugly. we had a good preseason…much better than many people expected. but it could have been better because improvement is always necessary.

don’t suppose anyone’s spotted quaresma’s sister over the weekend anywhere, as at least 3 wankers on this site seem to be bumping into her wherever they go.
as already suggested, drenthe’s age & price would make him the more likely signing, but that’s only if you can see aw actually signing a winger, which alarmingly i’m not so sure of. no question we do need the wings coverved again but i certainly wouldn’t put any money on aw doing it. i’m not normally one to question aw too much as he is amoungst the best managers in the world, however this lack of an effective winger concerns me a lot. who knows, maybe he’ll surprise us all, just don’t count on it though.

i agree with the passenger thing. craptista was definitely one. henry was petulant for most of the time. ajax game would see many replays in the season with a bunch of long balls thrown in. the preseason has been good but there is plenty to improve. wenger knows about it. he himself said that at times we missed reyes. i would not be surprised if he tried to get robinho. where is capello when you need him? had he been around this summer in madrid there was better chance of getting robinho. now that reyes deal is done, there is very little chance of getting robinho. wenger will definitely get a left winger. that position has been a hallmark of his teams and he knows its importance. the important thing is how the new players gel in the team. buying a sheva or a ballack gives you no guarantees either. i remember being very excited when we got baptista last year.
on a side note i think one thing underrated is flamster’s timing of arriving in the box. if he improves his shooting he will provide some goals from the midfield.
96.
guzeppe | august 5th, 2007 at 7:47 pm
not only his timing but also overall flamini is underrated. he might not be a yaya toure, or a super holding midfielder, but tactically he is better than many people think.
97.
vlcgooner | august 5th, 2007 at 7:49 pm
oh, one other point to those who keep pointing to the point spread. there were real weaknesses last year, especially against weaker teams, when we failed to score and conceded too many goals either on set-pieces or the oppositions only real attacking move. however, the last two years have also seen arsenal with an absolutely astounding injury list. last year gallas, henry and van persie missed a huge part of the season. the year before we literally had a 3rd string defense for much of the year. so, before you lay all of the blame on wenger for this remember that man u was incredibly lucky with injuries, while arsenal has been incredibly unlucky. chelsea, mind you, simply has two first teams, and pays their second team more than most teams can pay their entire club.
by the way, this is not an argument against getting a winger or against the need for improvement in the club. it is simply a point that a few of the wenger-haters need to take into account.

did no-one else think that anil was just being sarcastic? i know it’s hard to tell with the retards we get on here but still.
real are getting robben and chelsea get malouda and a fit joe cole, drenthe is up for grabs. ditto quaresma where ahtletico got simao and liverpool babel. fuck knows what can happen, but i definitly think insomniac wenger will get a leftie. his squad depth thing where he named a billion central midfielders was just a “we really don’t need diarra and you got it wrong again”.
whoever it was thinking myself and others have no objections about the team: the past two seasons were shocking considering how far we went not so long ago, but certain things do put a smile on my face: being 15 minutes away from doing what russian money hasn’t; walcott’s goal seemingly leading the way for the greatest kids of the future and what-not. we have problems to sort though.
myself and other ‘rose-tinters’ like topcat and whatnot have all voiced opinions on needing more players like a left winger and maybe another centre back, so i don’t know where you get our unflinching belief of victory next season. also, before traore had such a cracking pre-season i was worried about having no back up for left back, but him, sagna and gallas should mean that’s solid.
i do believe we are better without thierry henry and freddie ljungberg. like someone else mentioned - they seemed to believe that they didn’t need to work for the team anymore and that their previous talents would be enough for pro-longed quality. robin came out and said he plays for love of football, freddie went to west ham because he earns a lot of money. we don’t need that. however, we do know need them to be replaced.
side note: are west ham just collecting the most mediocre squad of paycheck collectors. bar ashton, their squad is just made up of the most over-rated players who just don’t care about football anymore: scott parker, fl, craig bellamy, possibly kieran dyer, ferdinand etc. etc.
104.
samuel | august 5th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
after robinho’s summer, he is way out of our price range and i don’t think he’d be who we need anyway, too lightweight, he would have died last night.

109.
george costanza | august 5th, 2007 at 9:34 pm
good post samuel,
i think most on here would agree that we need a left winger or wide player if you like, but does wenger?
surely we cant let two wide players leave in the same week and not bring at least one in ffs. we have no width at all on the left unless clichy plays there, but then we need him at left back. rosicky just isnt a wide player and like hleb should play centrally if we want to see his best.
where are all these names coming from though, we have never even been remotely linked with quresma or drenthe or any top winger for that matter and its worrying. the only one was gouffran, but thats gone quiet lately and i really dont see wenger going for anyone now.
we should have paid what it took for malouda though, french, strong and naturally left footed - perfect. i suppose at the time though we still had freddie and reyes so maybe that put aw off, but we have waited so long now that there doesnt seem to be many wingers left. we know that he wont buy for the sake of it, nor should he - we need top quality to finish the squad off and not some kid with potential.
another linked is modric, and a croatian guy on a-mania reckons a deal is done and set for january window. not a proper winger but a cracking player and very versatile, so we’ll wait and see.
lets hope something happens this week though eh?
samuel, what have you made of our preseason form. i know its early but i sense a new attitude in the squad and a will to win that we havent seen for 3yrs. eduardo looks the business too and has slotted in seamlessly, he has had lumps kicked out of him and just gets back up and never moans. he seems a proper player who’ll get stuck in, but also has the technique of a potential superstar. i’m gonna have a fiver on him as top scorer, solely due to the chances we make - if he takes half of them he will get 30 or more for sure.
wenger has a nice problem now though, picking his best team - its going to be hard leaving some out but i suppose its got to be done.

george did you observe the togetherness in the side against ajax and milan absolutely brilliant if we can defend properly we will be real contender’s for the title, the last time i saw hunger lik that was 2004 because the lad’s were so scared for throwing the league away the season before they come together and that low made the team spirit so strong that they went unbeaten for an entire season ,the appetite for success look’s real good
we must defend properly next year to have any chance and with the african nation’s it cast’s more doubt’s, but optimism is there just hope we dont let ourself’s down with bad defending
111.
vlcgooner | august 5th, 2007 at 10:19 pm
george, george, george! is the world looking a bit rosier now? it is good to see that the squad’s pre-season performance has even convinced you! i agree completely that the most impressive change has been the attitude…everyone is fighting for their spot, and they are all playing for each other. an clichy just looks like a monster– fast-as-hell, tireless, and relentless.
now get that left-sided player and perhaps another central defender who is strong in the air and i think the squad is set. with the current set up of playing hleb (and maybe rosicky) in the slot behind the striker, i am less concerned about the need for another out-and-out striker.
112.
george costanza | august 5th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
daveyb, totally agree
its not the football that has stood out preseason although eduardo and flamini and clichy deserve special praise, its the fact that we seem to have got that “we arent going to lose this game” mentality back and every ball is being fought for like the old days.
we all know the talent is there, if you can blend that with the right attitude and willingness to fight for each other then theres no limit to what can be achieved.
its early days though, a cold night in december against bolton will give a better idea of things but i have noticed a spirit and a workrate not seen since the invincibles, so who knows?
vic, vic, vic - things look rosier because we are finally seeing players working for each other and playing as a team, rather than certain individuals who just turned up when they wanted to.
couldnt agree more about this left sided player though, whos your money on then?
i’m off now to watch jaws, how good is this film - must have seen it 9/10 times but it still works. i’m hooked already and they arent even on robert shaws fucking boat yet - classic.

i was really negative before this pre-season but things are looking up a bit now. i’m gonna tone down my wenger-bashing and back the team. i was always going to back them once the season started anyway. silly season is for silly slating. fair play. i have ripped wenger and the board apart all summer and do not apologize for doing so. i still have man, many reservations about this board, about our tactics and about the ridiculous world some fans live in e.g. topcat etc…but i am a gooner for life and want the best for my team. i also happen to love wenger, no matter how much i rip him for being stubborn at times. its like when you get angry at your parents and feel you hate them sometimes even thgouh they only want what is best for you….anyway. a left-winger still badly needed and i think a striker too. most important of all though….

as for the winger, i have no idea who it will be. i will still bet on drenthe despite the rumors that he goes to chelsea. they already spent what on malouda? i guess if they sell ballack and robbin to rm and want to play with width they would need a winger. but that is too many ifs. but as i said, i don’t really know. in fact i don’t really know who is out there. i only know drenthe because of his recent celebrity. but my radar screen is somewhat smaller than mr. wenger’s.

geekov,
here’s what the dude reckons.
as the 2007/08 season draws ever closer, the final few transfers of the summer are being concluded to try and give each team the best chance of success.
man united have spent the most and it should guarantee them the title, while liverpool may have the edge on a surprisingly stingy chelsea this season. as for the rest, there are few surprises, although all will become clear by may 2008.
manchester united have spent over £50million this summer on anderson, nani and owen hargreaves and are a team building for the future. surprising most by winning the league last season with free-flowing attacking football, united have built on an already strong squad and have very few weak links.
the returning ben foster is unfortunately out until march with a knee injury, but tomasz kuszczak will provide competition for edwin van der sar in goal, while united have released the inconsistent kieran richardson to sunderland. only a major injury to either wayne rooney or cristiano ronaldo could dent their title hopes and even then they are covered. with carlos tevez finally manufacturing his exit from west ham.
squad depth is a key component of success, and liverpool have shown great ambition in the transfer market this summer that could see them finish second. with the young fernando torres and ryan babel arriving, rafa benitez has managed to cut much of the dead weight from the squad, including the likes of craig bellamy and luis garcia.
however, liverpool still lack the experience to push all the way, although their squad has been strengthened significantly. a new stadium, more money than you could shake a stick at and a tactically astute boss are all good for the club, but they still won’t get the title.
a second season without a title could well spell the end of jose mourinho’s reign at chelsea, unless he wins the champions league of course. third place may seem a little odd for a team who were steamrollering the league only a year ago, but without didier drogba and michael essien, who they will lose for the african cup of nations after christmas, chelsea will be up against it.
the signings of tal ben haim, steven sidwell and claudio pizarro will not have set the fans’ pulses racing, although they have added some depth to a squad that was mostly playing out of position last season. florent malouda has arrived, although most likely to replace arjen robben on the wing and the blues are still missing a quality right-back.
fourth position can be seen as a success considering the summer that arsenal have had. losing talismanic skipper thierry henry will certainly have had an effect on arsene wenger’s young squad, but not as much as losing wenger himself. having not committed himself to the club beyond his 2008 contract, these are worrying times for gunners fans.
kolo toure and emmanuel eboue will be missed during the african cup of nations, although wenger has bought bacary sagna from auxerre to fill in the gaps; while croatian eduardo da silva will attempt to fill the boots of henry. still shell-shocked by their captain’s departure, arsenal’s youngsters would do well to secure champions league football in yet another ’season of transition’.
make no mistake, arsenal will be pushed all the way by a tottenham side keen to end the ‘big four’ domination. with some excellent summer business, including the likes of darren bent and gareth bale arriving at the club, martin jol finally has a squad worthy of competing for a place in the champions league.

talk about lazy journalism.
so, the team spending the most cash wins?
ok, we’re doomed.
do our team looked shellshocked to you?
they look really committed and the team spirit seems fantastic.
still need a player or 2, but, let people write us off.

hey sf, long time mate. how’s ur site going? infact let me check it out now. i agree with u btw. i dont mind us being continually underated. it will only work in our favour. after watching yesterday’s match, (chelsea/man) i have no doubt that we will be serious contenders this season. drawing against derby and losing to sunderland is what we need to avoid

good morning all.
to whomever asked me about my opinion of pre-season: i only ever saw highlights but many things can be seen. we have many individual talents who could become a great team if we are given a season to gel then we could be a genuine contender next season. as it is, we are sure shots for third but i genuinely believe wenger is to buy someone and it can hopefully be the left winger situation we have beat in to the ground here.
friendlies have one main reason though: to regain fitness. however, we haven’t exactly been playing 3rd division teams or we-are-super-asia-spend-lots-of-money-on-us-tours. no, we played inter and ajax etc. and they tried battering the crap out of us and we stood up to it. we seem genuinely excited to stay above board and excited for 90 minutes to just win. not hope for a draw or the team to stop beating us up, just to win. it’s exciting.

“talismanic” surely isn’t a word.
hasn’t every word ever said since terry henry left been in the face of this ’shell-shocked’ image? it seems that many players in the team didn’t like being a part of the theirry henry show - even games he didn’t play would have to deal with his approval or dance - and that they can relish the responsibility.

agreed samuel. the strike force is now free from the shackles of henry.

wenger has not fckd up the team with a kneejerk spending spree to henry’s departure - which is what jon carter would like to see. twat.

mr ezz - you have a thick fucking skull and it shows. so someone does not qualify to be a kim basinger fan because you just watch her movies and have never met her in person? i am a supporter of any club that plays beautiful football. i love the game, and that’s all that matters to me. like someone else said, people in other countries wake up in the wee hours of the morning to see the team play, would a “fake” fan do that? some of these people don’t have enough to make ends meet, you think it is feasible for them to pay for airfare and plus the colossal ticket prices at the stadium in order to please you stuck up “real” fans? stop being ignorant and get yourself an education.
