(yeah, we have a bit of a -zee suffix thing going on here.) we're just pleased as punch with how popular the website has become and while we just did a redesign, we'll be doing another one after this season is over. you've heard of the digg and slashdot effect. well, we got yahoo'ed this week. we were mentioned in a yahoo tech blog post a week or so ago titled halloween ideas on the web. two nights ago that post was featured on the yahoo homepage. the traffic was pretty ... posted in affiliate marketing, blogging | no comments » so you think you have kick-ass program terms 16 october 2007 – 2:59 pm this is an old subject, but i recently found a few affiliate program terms that made my head spin, so i thought it might be time to raise this again. but first, let me say this... i run a business it's very simple. i get traffic and i ultimately send it away (after hopefully doing something useful to or for it). the idea is to send it somewhere that the user will get what they're looking for, in the form of a purchase. i get something for that referral. pretty simple. to me, every click i send out has a value. i live and die by earnings per click (epc) statistics. epc is the equalizer between competing merchants so i know where to send my traffic, and it tells me how much i can afford to pay for traffic, if i choose do do so. i look at epc ... posted in affiliate marketing | 9 comments » how to kill sales during the top week of the season 15 october 2007 – 11:30 pm i can't believe what i'm seeing. i was prompted to check out a merchant's site by a precipitous drop in conversion rates today. i can't be certain as we send most traffic to product pages, but this might explain at least some of the problem. here's the homepage... they put a customer service manifesto inside a javascript alert box. it's so big in firefox that it goes off the bottom of my very large screen. i can't even see the ok button to clear it. (sure, i can hit enter, but i had to think about that one.) usability aside, can you think of a scarier message to display? and this is the top selling week of the entire year for halloween costumes. i don't like to make an example of a small merchant like this, but it well illustrates the point that it is a good idea for affiliates ... posted in affiliate marketing | 10 comments » when memcached doesn’t cut it - website caching part ii 11 october 2007 – 7:38 pm we use memcached on lots of sites. the beautiful thing is, once you've got a bunch of servers running memcached, it's really easy to cache queries and save some serious database hits. we use it sometimes when we probably shouldn't. or at least we should be caching a little differently. case in point, our costume site, costumzee.com on which we've recently been enjoying a large amount of traffic. we did a redesign a few weeks ago, and right after the launch, during the busiest times of the day (evening), the database server was grinding to a halt, no more available connections, tmp tables all over, database deadlock, cpu load through the roof. nightmare. here's the cpu load on that server for the past two weeks. i've marked the times of the new design and when i implemented a new caching method. posted in web development | 7 comments » cashaddon - what’s wrong with incentive publisher browser plugins 01 october 2007 – 9:42 am there's a new incentive shopping browser plugin on the scene, called cashaddon. cashaddon is a cash back shopping portal. their model is that they have a firefox plugin that, when installed, gives you indication in the browser status bar if you're receiving cash-back commissions on a purchase from the current website. a small blue minus sign turns into a green plus sign. it's the same old browser plugin incentive model. this one's a firefox plugin without a major site behind it, so it's reach is limited, at least for now. also, like most incentive shopping sites, the technology behind this is leveraging relationships with merchants through the major u.s. affiliate networks, performics, linkshare, and commission junction. the only program that i found outside of those three is amazon, though i didn't browse through all 600+ merchants. the plugin was added to the firefox plugins resource site in august ... posted in affiliate marketing | 20 comments » voices carry. watch the f-bomb! 27 september 2007 – 2:30 pm if you know me well, you know i talk like a truck driver. i do only talk like that among my close friends whom i'm totally comfortable with, or a bunch of other guys tailgating. lucky you if you're one of them. a few weeks ago i was at a good friend's wedding. the morning of the wedding we played golf, about eight of us. i'm sure there was plenty of foul language on the golf course. after golf, we grabbed lunch in the clubhouse. posted in blogging | 17 comments » linkshare increases payment frequency 24 september 2007 – 6:55 pm linkshare announced today that they're moving to weekly payments: by moving to a weekly payment schedule, linkshare will reduce publishers’ wait time to receive commissions and effectively double the number of paydays from its current plan. the new schedule, combined with linkshare’s arrangement to pay publishers on everything earned over $1, rather than waiting for them to earn over $25 or $50 like other major networks, makes linkshare the most publisher-friendly payment plan in the market. make no mistake about it, this is a positive move. getting paid earlier is always better. though getting paid more frequently is not always better. just ask any affiliate overseas what they do with $20 checks. due to bank fees, they're utterly useless. most non-us affiliates would rather get one big fat check rather than 4 small ones. i took a quick look in the interface and it does not ... posted in general | 5 comments » previous entries  subscribe looking for consumer product info?
