if you get adware or a virus you can try to fix it yourself.
this page has the tools you need for the job.
there are three kinds of repair tools available. spyware and
adware removers and virus removers. norton utility is the most famous of the
bunch. i don’t know how many computers i have fixed that have norton installed.
don’t waste the money; the free tools on this page will work.
first i will discuss how to not get them in the first place.
1-
you, don’t go to anyplace that has free stuff or is too good
to be true. example : free music, porn, free anything. i am thoroughly convinced
that none of the packages (norton, pctools, zonelabs, etc.) work. they do
contribute a lot to magazine ad revenue. do not open any attachments contained
in email unless you know the sender is competent. and the email is from whom it
purports.
2-
the firewall. there is one in win xp. use it. the first thing
a virus does is try to turn it off.. if you have win 2000 or win 98, use the
one from zone labs on this page.
3-
once you have the
virus, it is too late, big deal, norton tells you.
once you have them, try the adware removers first. the most
famous of them is spysweeper
and
adaware.
. download them by clicking on the name.
the virus checker is free too, there is a 30 day trial from
avg (grisoft). download it here. there is a
free one from
microsoft.
if your computer is really gone, these tools will remove too
much and your computer will not boot. back up what you can first. usually
my documents , the quicken data directory , the favorites from internet
explorer and the email address book will do it.
then go to the all programs list to remind yourself if there
is other data.. use a cd-rw for the job
or a usb hard drive. once you own one, you can back up to it weekly. the
scripts are: batch
file
cd c:\documents and settings\
xcopy *.*
z:\myoldcomputer/e/c/h/r/k
z is drive letter of usb or cd device. that will get the
internet favorites, the desktop and word and excel documents for all users. you
can back up mail items from your mail program.
sometimes the internet explorer is damaged so use
firefox. it is more secure and remembers passwords a lot better. did you forget to
install
adobe?
if all fails, bring the computer in as i can get the data.
cost $45 if backed up and you have the
disks that came with the machine, $65 if not.
cost $90 to get
data , get disks, reformat, install windows and restore data.
