fix that wet cell phone

here is a story about something that seems to be very common these days: a wet cell phone. for some reason, it’s very common for people to jump into a body of water with their cell phone in their pocket. i’ve seen it first hand in my back yard. well here is a story about how 1 person i know got his cell phone dried out and working properly again.
he ran into the pacific ocean with his cell phone in his pocket. that was the bad news. the good news was that it was turned off. even better news was that he was with an engineer that works for motorola and an engineer that works for nokia. both of them said not to worry that they could get it working again. here were the steps that they took:
1. remove the battery immediately. do not try to turn the phone on to see if it works when it is wet.
2. since the water was salt water, the corrosive salt had to be removed from the phone. to do this they soaked the phone in the pool at home and shook it all around under the water. they mentioned that the chlorine wasn’t the best for the phone either. maybe a bath tub would be better?
3. next they ran a garden hose over the phone to rinse the chlorine out of it. at this point water could be seen in the lcd screen.
4. after all the water was run over the phone, they lightly blew the phone out with air.
5. lastly, they cooked the phone in the oven. 125*f for 5 hours.
after the phone was removed from the oven, the battery was reinstalled. the phone turned on and everything worked properly. only one small part of the lcd screen was missing a few pixels.
try this only at your own risk. this may not work for all phones or under all circumstances. but as a last ditch effort it may be worth a try.

i ran mine thru the wash, took out the battery and sim card, let it dry for a few hours and put it back together and it worked fine, it was a free phone too.

happened to me once too, except minus the whole ocean thing. i just used a heater to evaporate all the water out of it and it came back to life the next day.
if you’re worried about minerals in the water used to rinse the phone (calcium sodium etc), buy yourself a 4l jug of distilled water. it should be mostly free of crap.

this happend twice to me excluding the ocean but my cell phone got wet and the other time a client had gotten his laptop wet. canned air is a life saver

the most important thing is speed. getting the phone shut off and dry as soon as possible. if you are not sure what liquid did it, cleaning it with distilled water is never a bad idea. you can clean most electronics with these instructions.
i will say that if you have to take it in for other service the phone company may refuse to work on it because it was water damaged. there is a strip that looks like checkerboard under the battery on some new phones which is moisture sensitive.
incidently the drivers for the t5 and t6 screws that hold most phones together are available at sears for $3 each (green topped).

i had a motorolla much music phone and i went swimmin with it in my pocket for about 45 min!! i kept trying to get it to turn on but it woulndt so when i got home i finally took out the batt and sim and put it under a hot lamp for about 2 hours it worked good for 10 min then the main and external lcd went kinda dark so i then used a blow dryer for 2 hours now it works great! i was glad i didnt short circuit enything when i kept tryin to turn it on

okay, for those of us who act on this much slower, i’m trying to revive my son’s wet razr. we’ve already replaced it, but his brother is ogling it and i’d rather give it to him than leave it dead in the drawer.
someone told me yesterday that they left a wet phone in the glove box of a hot car for a few days then forgot about it and voila. that got me thinking, then i found your story…
does anyone think it’s reasonable to continue life support on this stupid piece of electronica?

hi can somebody help me?
my phone’s monitor (oyster, virgin mobile) got wet and the friggin monitor is black. (just the monitor)
occasionally the menu blinks but other than that, the monitors blank as night.
can anyone help me?
