(july 12, 2002)-hello marks, today we will take a look at two men, one injury and how one overcame it and how the other might not.
the day was monday, may 21st, 2001, in the main event of wwf raw. it
was triple h and “stone cold” steve austin in a match against chris
benoit & chris jericho, with the tag team titles on the line. late
in the match triple h ran into the ring to save austin who was
moments away from tapping out to chris jericho’s, “walls of jericho”
and in doing so snapped his quadriceps muscle. would this stop
triple h? no, the show must go on.
now fast forward to monday, july 8th, 2002 in the main event of wwe
raw, the match was a 5 on 5 tag team match. it was the n.w.o.
members kevin nash, x-pac, big show and fellow heels chris benoit &
eddie guerrero versus booker t, goldust, rob van dam, bubba ray and
spike dudley. after just returning from biceps surgery kevin nash
finally was back and going to make a big impact with the n.w.o.
right? nope, not at all. it was late in this match that the same
injury, a quadriceps tear, happened to kevin nash. would this stop
the man they call big sexy? yes, but the show must go on, right?
after tearing his muscle clean from his bone triple h continued on.
why would someone do that you might ask? why? because in wrestling
much like the circus the show must go on. whether you love or like
him, triple h truly loves the sport of “professional wrestling.” he
eats, sleep, lives, and even dates the daughter of the real life wwe
owner vince mcmahon. triple h is all about wrestling and the
wrestling fans, that is why triple h despite tearing his “quad”
continued on. the story lines for the night called for more
wrestling and more spots before the match was supposed to be over.
triple h throughout all the pain still took the spots that were
planned for the night’s storyline. he even took the “walls of
jericho” on the announcer’s table. which in my mind couldn’t have felt
good on a torn quad muscle. ten minutes after tearing his “quad”
triple h and “stone cold” steve austin finally lost the match to
benoit and jericho. that’s when the hurt triple h finally fell and
stayed down until helped arrived.
after tearing his “quad” muscle kevin nash fell to his knees
screaming in pain, not to move again until raw went off the air.
the match continued on and finished without nash participating.
thankfully, the other wrestlers picked up the slack on the spot and
made the end of the match go off without a hitch.
triple h had surgery that same week after the injury and started
rehab as soon as he could. within eight months triple h returned
from the injury bigger than ever. the same people who hated him less
than a year ago were now cheering him, turning him into one of the
company's biggest baby faces. triple h won the royal rumble in
january and went on to wrestlemania 18. triple h challenged chris
jericho for the undisputed championship that night in toronto’s sky
dome. he beat jericho to become the undisputed world champion.
tuesday, the day after kevin nash tore his “quad,” he had surgery; all
went well according to the doctors. nash has a lot of rehab ahead of
him, lots of hard work. that’s hard work, “big kev” not laying
around collecting a check drinking martinis with scott hall. we as
fans know hard work is not in you, we saw it in your many wcw world
championship title reigns as well as your whole career. you love to
coast, do what you can to get by. how you made it this long in this
business is amazing to me, i guess being a big good looking guy does
have its advantages. nash, learn from your buddy triple h, hard work
pays off.
triple h worked hard and was rewarded well for what he did, and what
he did is love the wrestling business and its fans. let’s see what
you do now, what do you have left, and how you're rewarded. “big lazy,”
i don’t think you’ll work hard, and if you don’t, good riddance.
“it’s a long road back; i know that. but i am not a quitter. no way
am i retiring. that was not my last match,” nash said. “anyone who
thinks i’m gonna call it quits after this doesn’t know me.” he
paused, then, with a laugh, added, “i’ve got way too much more shit
to stir in that locker room and way too many young kids to hold
down," nash said jokingly after surgery.
boy that nash sure is a funny guy. you can see why everyone in the
locker room loves him so. next week we will look at the vengeance
ppv, and i will give out my world famous predictions.
