andy pandy ellis reports:
if god
had meant football to be played in the air, wouldn't he have put grass
in the sky?
apologies for the lateness of this match report, but i
have been unable to write due to the crick in my neck that i had as a
result of this fixture. watching the ball sail back and forth over my
head, resulted in repetitive strain injury (something which most
corinthians have suffered from at one time or another). not a game for
the purists this one, however the conditions were pretty atrocious. with
a strong wind blowing down the slope, and a boggy pitch, the first half
we were under the cosh from the strollers “bolton” tactics – lump it
forward at every opportunity and if you get a throw-in, even better, as
their defender could then launch it, wind assisted into our area. they
had a number of big fellas that made a nuisance of themselves in the
area, hence this tactic paid dividends – they scored 2 early goals both
from systematic launching! in fairness we spent most of the first half
on the back foot, but at every opportunity we tried to get the ball on
the deck.
we did manage to pinch a goal before the half ended. we
got them back at their own game a long throw into the box saw 4
corinthian players meet the knock down with the nearest uni player yards
away. colin pearce getting their first and firing the ball into the
net.
we certainly didn’t deserve to be down in the first half,
and they were by no means better than us, just a case of the 12th man
being a combination of the driving wind, and the infamous slope!
seeing how the strollers took us apart using the wind, we
decided that it was the best option for us to do the same, launching it
forward from open play and throw ins at every opportunity. we did manage
to lose another goal, though and at 3-1 down things looked bleak, its at
these times that you need to stand up and be counted. we battled on and
got the break we needed. seeing as how pete randall had scored a 45
yarder from a free kick against ea, mike tried his luck. sending over a
freekick into the strollers box the ball bounced and the keeper
un-challenged did one of those “sensible soccer” attempts to get it –
jumping forward and with his arms fully extended the ball bounced over
him and into the net – cue mike’s equally long 45 yard dash back up the
pitch in celebration. 3-2 and back in the game, it only looked like one
team were going to score from then on – we did again from a set-piece a
devilish ball into the box from colin pearce from a corner was met at
the back post by kev with about 2 minutes of the game to go!
3-3 and in hindsight points dropped but the strollers
worked hard, and in poor conditions it hampered the game so it never
really got going.
individual
points
kev broad’s uncharacteristic school boy
error – ball played to him, first time control, just about to get into
full flow with a speedy run, steps on ball, ball goes out of play, kev
falls on his arse – proof that even pro’s are liable to mistakes more
akin to ressies football.
matt jackson's flying head-butt tackle – or
was that a different game? anyway worth mentioning again anyway – as it
was pure commitment from the big man. missing the initial challenge his
forward momentum took him over, as we were preparing for “timber” matt
put a bit of spring into this fall, and tried to tackle the player who
had the ball at his feet with his head. (my favourite moment of the
season so far)
tom daulton is the gaffers choice for star
man this week – another good performance from the scuffer, lets hope
there are many more like this.
the uni strollers were a weird bunch, some as good as
gold, but the one thing that particularly got on my tits was that some
of them appealed more times than lenny henry on comic relief. any
disputed ball and there they were arms raised baying for “uni’s ball” –
it got really tiresome. we didn’t complain when their centre-back
launched into what could’ve been a devastating two-footed challenge,
however the slightest showing of a crunching challenge from us were met
with cries of derision from some of them. so well done lads for just
playing the game.

andy ellis reports:
a
daunting prospect a team new to the league, comprising what turned out
to be a useful blend of youth and experience. on a very large pitch, we
knew we would have our work cut out, but bloody hell, that match was
knackkering!
bizarrely my body felt reasonably good the next day, whether that s a
sign that my fitness is improving, or that my body was in total denial
that it had just run that much in a game!
tomlinscote are a team of 6th formers and their teachers from
their school. hence they have been playing together for some
time and it
showed. they stroked the ball round confidently and played the best most
fluent football i have seen in our league. furthermore they seemed to
have a very loose formation, the nearest we could determine was that
they played a rough
3-5-2 – meaning that they overwhelmed us in
midfield. 3-0
down at half time, with us basically chasing shadows for
much
of the game. no complaints whatsoever, however on the face
of it –
2-0 would have been a fair reflection as we did catch
them out at the
back a few times, but we were largely
reduced to sitting back and trying
to stem the flow of their attacks.
half-time
came and we knew what we needed to do, “close them down and battle” – we
tried but we were just so knackered. the second half was all about heart
– out of the game we had to just try and make sure it didn’t turn into a
rout. we amply managed to do this, and even nicked a couple of goals in
the process. happy to report i got both – one a thunderbolt, and my best
goal for corinthians (about 30 yards out, off the underside of the bar –
ave it), the other an opportunistic lob over the stranded keeper after
fine play from steve and joe on the left, resulted in kev purchese
forcing their keeper and defender into a last ditch challenge at the
edge of their area.
not much
to report in this game as we couldn’t do much as they must’ve had 70% of
the possession! however once again at times we were able to get the ball
down on the deck knock it around and cause them problems at times.
eveyone ran as hard as they could, and kept on till the end, which is
testament to the new team spirit – well done everyone!
we look
forward to the return game, which i reckon i will be much closer due to
the narrower pitch, i reckon we could really trouble them from set
pieces with our comparative height advantage, plus they wont have so
much room in which to manoeuvre. we also look forward to 3 years time,
when their team will be decimated because they will have discovered the
delights of drink, fags, woman, nightclubs etc which will decimate their
youthful enthusiasm!
the game
was played in a very good spirit, and was enjoyable in a sense…
the gaffer
went for lee maidens as star man, and admittedly it is difficult to pick
one in the circumstances – i personally was a little disappointed not to
be nominated, and in the absence of nominating myself would’ve gone for
tom daulton perhaps?
not many
teams will get anything from playing tomlinscote, and they are a shoe in
for promotion this year. looking at our upcoming fixtures we
realistically should be looking for 6 points from the next 2, and on
current form reckon we can as well!
pete randall also reports:
we all knew it wasn’t going to be easy
and they made sure it wasn’t by literally whipping the s**t out of us!
after a short burst down the a31 with
some colin mccrae rally moves by young lee maidens we found
ourselves in the women’s changing
rooms of tomlinscote sports centre where several of us nearly
used the funny looking sinks as
urinals!
after exploring the women’s changing
rooms we started are forty-five minute hike to the pitch that
consisted of several different
surfaces, which enabled us to sharpen are studs up for the
forthcoming match. the faces of the
corinthian team dropped straight away when we saw that the
size of the pitch was the equivalent
to richmond park.
never the less we started the game
looking interested and up for it despite missing several regular
players,
matt j, sean lody, mike jarman and
phil p, but we welcomed the return of kev purchase.
we unfortunately went one nil down
straight away to a well worked goal by there right winger who
proved to be a good little player and
caused andy mac serious problems at the back during the
course of the ninety minutes.
to be honest there isn’t much to
report on the first half as they ran as ragged and made us look stupid
and not interested, no one looked
interested and everyone looked like they wanted to lie down.
truthfully i believe they were used to
their pitch and the width of it and they made us work hard and
i even saw colin broad sweating for a
change!
we went in at half time three nil down
and to be honest we looked like we hadn’t actually woke up
yet so the half time chat from boss
broad wasn’t a pleasant one but it seemed to work, not sure if
was due to what he said or the fact
that as he was swinging his head we was all getting
soaked by his sweat.
we went out second half with a
fighting spirit and we weren’t going to be made fools of and we
certainly
weren’t going to be beaten without a
fight. unfortunately we conceded two more goals and heads did
begin to drop. are luck was summed up
when hobbs broke free from his defender and beat another
one and perfectly lobbed the keeper
but unfortunately it hit the post, very unlucky but then up stepped
andy ‘no longer do i cry’ ellis who
hit a screamer from about 25 yards out that was travelling faster
than bird flew and sailed straight
into the back of the net. it was such a good goal that there team
applauded. then the gready git decided
to add a second to his tally for the day but his thanks had
to go to the fresh-legged purchase who
was chasing the ball like it was covered in porn. he challenge
for the ball with the keeper and to be
honest i thought he was going to flatten the keeper but the
ball rolled perfectly to the feet of
ellis who lobbed everyone and floated the ball into the open net.
the game ended with a defeat for
corinthian but are performance in the second half was a victory
with the amount of fight and effort we
put in and for that i thank the team as it proves how much
we have improved since last season as
we would have lied down and let teams run all over us but
now we stand up and fight.
man of the match (for me) this week
goes to andy ellis as not only did he score two but he work his nuts
off for ninety minutes and there was
even one point where he was couffing up his lungs!

a game in which we had
about 35 gilt-edged opportunities but could only score 2. the
performance was very good in places and the frustration felt was
borne out of the fact the we are better than chidd. however, some
individual errors at the back (ware, broad, bennett 1 each) coupled
with some woeful finnishing gave chidd the 3 points.

we showed good
character to keep running the game until the end. indeed the
very last kick of the game was us missing an open goal. sums it

i am
going to go straight into the clichés here – it was a game of 2 halves!
no
changed my mind i am going to write this match report in limericks:

we were
definitely out to thrill
playing

we’d score

we
couldn’t quite turn the screw

our confidence grew
we just
couldn’t seem to score

it
would’ve been hard to take on the chin
a fair

we just
didn’t have enough energy within
ok enough
of that bollocks – quick summary, we played easily our best opening 30
minutes, possibly ever… some excellent football from everyone, dave not
called into action at all really for the first half. w&w are a fit
youthful side, and it showed in the 2nd half as we blatantly
tired, and let them back in to the game.
moments of note:
our goal
came from some fine play on the wing from colin pearce, who found the
touchline, pulled the ball back for joe “gag” hobbs.
dave broad
producing an excellent one on one save right at the end of the game.
star man
goes to joe “goal a game” hobbs – invaluable contribution upfront, has
the knack of pulling off defenders to tuck away all the balls that come
his way… (one thing i was told that was missing from my reports were gay
innuendos, so there you go – sorry hobbs you’ve had the quota this
week!)
can’t be
arsed to report on you all this week, as its getting quite tiresome –
but i will say that we are looking pretty good now; 2 matches unbeaten –
top of the table next week.
i would
like to amend the end bit
“top of
the table next week”
i am not
insinuating that we will go top of the table next week, as that’s
mathematically impossible and that would make me look foolish - i meant
we are playing the top of the league opposition next week!

manager paul taylor was on his nephew's
birthday duty but managed to show for the last ten to see his side
complete a 5-0 victory over bottom of the league st john's.
the reverend was on hand to throw
together a starting eleven; "okay chaps, pick a colour then pick a
number", he said whilst ferociously manipulating a paper fortune teller.
the gods were on the corry side making
some successful decisions; andy crump - centre back, rob bridger- right
mid, simon robinson - tourets support group.
one player who took very well to his
selection up front was sammy horne. his haul came about due to his
constant pestering of the st johns back line drawing some negative
comments from the st johns manager, or as the papers phrased it: "st
johns forlorn as hatrick is borne from horne thorn despite the scorn"
the team performance was pleasing after
a patchy start to the season and we now look to more of the same in
future.

hey
presto… we produced another cracking team performance and reaped the
results – 4-1! ea sports were 3rd going into this (it’s in the) game,
but we outplayed them!
we were
asked if we wanted to play this (its in the) game in the street, which
we declined…
some big
factors for this (it’s in the) game.
we had 3
subs!
we scored
2 in the first 10 minutes!
and you
couldn’t have cycling shorts showing! – one of the refs little pet hates
or something how it gave someone an advantage over the other team is
beyond me, and both team professed “who cares” – however the ref was
adamant that “its in the game” or was it “its in the rule book”
we were
focussed this week – smarting a bit from last weeks result, determined
to not let in two goals in the first 10 minutes, we came out of the
traps like a greyhound on ben johnson’s finest, rather than our usual
disgruntled pug. 2 goals up in the first 10 – well it felt like an
eternity to me as i sweated out last nights curry and beers in the first
half of another very sunny october morning!
uphill and
exerting some concerted pressure, a cross from the right missed
everyone, except the ghost that walks among us – mr hobbs who, was
totally unmarked, produced a trademark bicycle kick, with a perfectly
placed shot to the keeper’s far post. this fired us up even more – we
could smell the fear and taste the victory already! we got the second
from a long-throw again a knock down found pete randall, who must’ve got
lost or confused as he’s never found in the opposing team’s box! – who
rifled an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from about the
penalty spot – very nice finish mr randall. we should have been 3 up –
we played some excellent containing football when they had possession,
our organisation was much better than in recent weeks, and as a
consequence we forced them into conceding possession time again through
their own errors as they searched to get back into the game. i cut out a
sloppy ball and raced onto their goal 1 on 1 and unfortunately their
keeper guessed right and got enough on it to push it just round the
post!
we looked
comfortable, and they only had two threats really – the big fella up
front who couldn’t trap a slug with a pint glass, but had the physical
presence to trouble us, and a useful midfielder. their goal was a rather
speculative shot from 25 yards which i’ve seen baby james deal with
before but this time he kind of dived over the ball even though it was
about 4 foot off the ground. the game was there for the taking, and we
all knew we could take the 3 points, but we just hoped the corinthian
jitters didn’t set in.
a new
trick was unveiled out of the corinthian pantheon of tricks – pete and
dayan “don’t call me dayan” swapped position for our kick off – and to
keep the ruse up – as matt asked out loud “where you playing pete” we
explained rather loudly “they’ve switched” oh what mischievous tykes we
are – pete then had a rather speculative shot from the kick off, before
trotting back before he got another nose bleed.
some of
our play and passing was excellent, and i will mention this again, but
everyone played really well, and everyone slogged it out – hence we
scored a third – a build up on the left, a ball cross the goal leaving
lee maidens the simplest of tap ins (almost as simple as kev broads
tap-in from the last game!) 3-1 up and we were qe2 caribbean (“cruising”
in case the penny doesn’t drop) the most we’ve scored this season has
been 3 and we’ve always conceded at least 2 every game – not this time.
credit to the defence for looking more and more sturdy with each game –
and the midfield for some relentless running to make us a team far
harder to beat than in recent games – and credit to the forwards for
scoring something that was missing last season. without getting all
gushy – its basically a big pat on the pat for everyone – and for the
last couple of games we’ve behaved more and more like a team – no
backchat, sportsmanlike, and plenty of encouragement all round – just
like to point out that i hope people have noticed my change in attitude
– yeah well its because i fucking you love you all now, and i don’t want
to get stroppy with any of you!
anyway we
are missing a goal – and it was a 40 yarder from pete – i would like to
say it was an unstoppable screamer – however it did take a bounce and
lofted over the keepers head – however credit where credit’s due – pete
has been a big advocate of “just have a go” for the past few games, and
he practiced what he preached. further credit should go to the fact he
had checked the position of the sun to calculate the precise angle of
where the rays would be blinding, and like a fighter pilot sent one “out
of the sun”. he got a good leaping on from a few of us as well for good
measure.
4-1 –
lovely jubbly – well deserved lads and credit to each and every one of
you.
in fact i
better mention everyone, as i didn’t for the last match report, and i
don’t want anyone to sulk that i didn’t so here we go
baby james
– he didn’t really have that much to do – however i’m sure he shouted
something along the lines of “come on yellows” a first for corinthians!
sean –
good game, solid, and more composed and when in possession looks to
setup an attack rather than just a clearance.
mike
jarman – the general – rallies the troops marshals the defence, and
planned our attacks – at the end of the season i think we will award him
the cbe “corinthians - blooming excellent”
pete
randall – well he gets a mention up above, but 1st goal for
corinthians – about bloody time!
colin
broad – nice one manager, good game, good subs
lee
maidens – starting to fit into the team quite well
dayan
don’t call me dayan – making the midfield roll his own – hard working
and always got a smile – really good to have him on board.
me – after
a shite first half – i think i got the beer and wine out of my system
enough to last the 2nd half.
matt
jackson – put the shits up us before the game by disclaiming “the other
team are big fellas” – i was expecting the bfg, andre the giant, the
jolly green giant (ho ho ho), et all to come trotting out! other than
that mr jackson’s performances have been getting better all season and
another game difficult to fault.
tom –
starting to get build a rapport with the ghost up front, and i reckon a
goal away from really kick starting his season
joe hobbs
– regularly scoring and that’s all you ask of a striker – he is starting
to haunt opposition defences by popping up unmarked. perhaps this is
coinciding with the run up to halloween?
andy mac –
coming on for sean and ably filled in, a very useful sub, in this
instance, to call on.
colin
pearce – nearly got booked for wearing cycling shorts (still confused by
that one) – a pair of fresh legs when we needed it the most and harried
their defence and created all sorts of problems (no change there then)
blond
fella – came on the left hand side of midfield and didn’t have long to
get involved, so hopefully we’ll see more of him in the coming weeks
(sorry but i didn’t catch this guys name).
star man
this week could’ve come from any of the above as there were lots of
really good performances – but pete gets it this week, great performance
capped by 2 goals – his first and second for the club.

match
report – corinthian guildford reserves vs. ockham
3rd
october godalming college.
story
of the season so far – two nil down after 10 mins…
match report by andy ellis
ockham
were a good side, will probably finish top 4. however 2-0 nil down we
battled back into the game with 2 deserved goals. we played some good
football, and battled hard – the first goal came as a result of a long
throw (the first of many) – the ball bounced around a little, and fell
to dayan who hit a sweet unstoppable shot into the corner – his first
for the reserves. the equalising goal was a bit crap – kev beat about 4
players cutting through their defence like a shovel through shit –
rounded the keeper and tapped it in from about 4 yards – all that work
to score a tap-in – a bit ropey from our resident pro he could’ve at
least got down on his hands and knees and headed it in or knocked it in
with his arse…
half-time
and with the slope on our favour for the second half, we fancied our
chances, and the game was potentially there for the taking.
it was the
first time that we have dominated the second half of a game against a
team who are further up the table than us! we just didn’t seem able to
carve out a real clear cut chance or fashion that killer pass. we had a
lot of pressure, and we certainly troubled a small team with our long
ball routines.
it was a
real blow to let in such an unfortunate, and what turned out to the
winning goal – a 30 yard shot from their portly but influential
midfielder, got a deflection at the edge of the box bamboozling the
normally unbamboozled baby james – 3-2 down, and we certainly didn’t
deserve to be!
i am
writing this report a week later, and after the game i will report about
in a mo. so apologies for the missing individual reports this week but
i’ve kind of forgotten who did what!
star man
was a clear choice, dayan (he’ll have to tell me how to pronounce it as
mentioned today that “i’ve to stop calling him dayan”) – sorry dayan.
plus if you call him di, then it sounds like a threat – as me and di
have the midfield partnership now the amount of times i hear randall
shout “ellis di”. anyway i digress, in the second half a lot of our
domination was down to dayan patrolling the midfield, cutting out the
threat from ockham’s 2 best players (their centre mids), and generally
being very good, strong in the challenge, and working his ass off.
a few
other mentions go to:
their
centre forward for having a spasm after scoring a shite goal – he ran
away like a man possessed – i turned round and there he was writhing
about in the floor. i can spot breakdancing, but that was an epileptic!
kev for
sulking – perhaps it was the result, perhaps it was because he only
managed to beat 5 of ockham’s players for his goal and not the whole
team, perhaps it was because we had to wait to lock up (looking for lost
balls, and moving pete randall’s car – he says the alarm locked him out,
i think he just didn’t want to see us hot-wiring it in front of us all)
– before being subjected to taunts from his own brother about being a
pro, and the randall “why are you sulking” (i can empathise with
that!!!)
baby james
for producing a gordon banks / pele moment – hard to believe but he
moves bloody quick for someone with a rounded frame – top class save.
the ref –
turning down a handball in our own area from an inconspicuous mike
“mike’s” jarmans incident – explaining to the protesting ockham players
that there was no intent – indeed there might not have been, but i’ve
seen them given for less. however in the 2nd half he turned
down a stonewall appeal from us for a handball that had intent all over
it – their player blatantly flicking it away. anyway it’s a measure of
our team that after the appeal we played on and got on with it unlike
the ockham team who some of them even dashed 50 yards up the pitch to
protest. perhaps that means we’re more easy going, more sportsmanlike,
or perhaps we think a 50 yard dash is a little too far with 80 minutes
played!
the whole
team for working hard and playing on equal or better terms than ockham –
we all agreed if we produced more performances like that we would easily
pick up more points.
