brink
of war:
spring
1967: the state of israel, as it approaches its 19th birthday, appears at
peace. but the peace is fragile. up on the golan heights, syrians are
damming the banias, headwaters of the river jordan. down below, inside
israel, terrorist attacks continue. when one such attack takes the life of
young father in the galilee, levi eshkol, israel’s new prime minister
feels the heat. eshkol, a self-effacing man still in the shadow of the
legendary david ben-gurion, orders retaliation. soon israeli pilots shoot
down six syrian migs, one falling to earth just outside damascus.
the
effect of the attack is the exact opposite of what eshkol intended.
fearful of the effect on the syrian regime, the russians convince gamel
abdel nasser, president of egypt, that israel is planning to march on
damascus. to "protect" syria, nasser masses troops on the
israeli border.
the
diplomatic consensus is that nasser is bluffing-- that the troops are part
of an elaborate show of force designed to impress moscow and the arab
world. but eshkol knows nasser -- the self-proclaimed leader of the whole
arab nation. he knows nasser could easily lose control. so he responds to
the troop movements with a conciliatory gesture.
misinterpreting
eshkol's olive branch as a sign of weakness, nasser blockades the straits
of tiran. he calls the blckade a first step in his long-planned campaign
to annihilate israel. suddenly, the middle east is on the brink of war.
despite
popular calls for an immediate military response, eshkol waits. he sends
his foreign minister on a mission to sound out israel's allies. at the
white house, lyndon johnson proclaims his allegiance with israel. but,
johnson, haunted by vietnam, warns that israel must not fire the first
shot.
back
home in jerusalem, the cabinet agrees to heed president johnson's advice.
but when eshkol is called upon to inform the nation, his radio address is
a halting, stuttering disaster. now the people see eshkol as weak and
hesitant. calls for the return to power of moshe dayan, the hero of the
last war, reach a crescendo.
to
eshkol dayan is a lone wolf and grand-stander. inviting him back is the
one thing he cannot do. so it falls on eshkol's closest colleague, golda
meir, to convince the prime minister. whatever his faults, golda says,
dayan has that indefinable something that the people need in a crisis.
soon
jordan's king hussein signs a defense pact with nasser. this pact creates
a military alliance that completely surrounds the jewish state. thus
eshkol relents. making his personal peace with dayan, he appoints him
defense minister. with nasser and the arabs spewing calls for the israel's
liquidation, the people of israel united, and dayan back in the fold,
eshkol is ready to give the order for what would be his nation's finest
hour.

the
good shepherd:
night
of may 23, 1944-- lt. alexei (alec)
kosov is the one of three allied soldiers breaking out of stalag
23/gorlitz, a german pow camp. out through a tunnel, alec and his mates
make it past the gates. but once outside in the dark woods, alec hears the
germans in pursuit. machine gunfire exploding behind him, alec dives for
cover and looks back.. there he sees two of his comrades haven't been as
lucky. ss guards are standing over them and alec watches helpless as the
germans fire point blank, finishing them off. alec, the lone survivor,
finishes the war serving as an intelligence officer during the allied
invasion of germany.
a
year after the war, alec is back teaching law at columbia university.
unsettled and tired of academic law, alec is intrigued when willis
speaker, his old commanding officer shows in the back of his class one
day. with him is lewis bates,
an official in the newly formed joint intelligence agency. upon
introduction, bates wants to know if the russian-born professor is willing
to return to germany on one more mission. alec's assignment would be to
rescue the dr. hans muller.
one of the world's leading physicists before the war, muller was the man
in charge of the german atom bomb project. that the germans never
succeeded may well be due to the fact-- the jia believes-- that muller
actually sabotaged the project.
presumed
dead after he was arrested in 1944, it turns out that he is alive and he
is being held prisoner by the russians-- in the very same camp where alec
served his time as a pow. alec speaks the language and knows the
territory. thus he figures as the man to get into gorlitz and bust muller
out. upon meeting muller's daughter claudia, and hearing her tell her
father's story, alec agrees to go back to germany and into the russian
zone.
part
of a routine prisoner exchange, alec gets into gorlitz no problem. there,
he makes contact with leotnov,
a captain on the pay of the u.s. leotnov informs him that there will be a
slight delay in their plan owing to the fact that a few days two men had
escaped, which caused the colonel to tighten security. once the escapees
are recaptured, leotnov himself commands the firing squad. but just after
the squad executes its task, one of its members turns and shoots leotnov.
as his contact lays dying, alec knows that he and muller will have to find
another way.
aided
by two fellow inmates who know much more than they should, alec escapes
the camp along with the professor. making it to poland, they board a train
heading back west. it is on that train that alec meets ben
greene, a one-eyed man who introduces himself as a jew from
palestine. greene informs alec that the man he is shepherding back to
america is not who-- or what-- he seems. not a world-class physicist,
muller's genius is of a different sort. muller, greene says, is a chemical
weapons expert who made his fortune supplying the ss with zyklon b, the
gas they used at auschwitz.
not
knowing what to believe, alec loses greene and calls first bates and then
speaker. speaker doesn't know, but according to bates, greene is a russian
agent and that if he tries again to interfere, alec should not hesitate to
shoot him. alec does spot greene again, but this time the jew has proof--
not just his own word, but the testimony of his lady friend, who, it turns
out, is the same woman alec met back in new york-- posing as claudia
muller. in fact, the bogus claudia is elena
wolf, a double agent assisting greene.
alec
goes to confront muller. but before he can get the professor's side of the
story, muller escapes aided by members of the werewolf underground, a
group of fanatic ex-nazis still operating after the war. in the course of
their getaway, the werewolves capture, and eventually murder, ben greene.
thus, having been duped by his own government and by the german whose life
he has saved, it's up to alec, erstwhile professor, erstwhile pow, now
aided by elena wolf, to hunt down muller and dispense the rough justice
the nazi doctor deserves.

life of johnson:
"life
of johnson" is the story of willie ("boy") johnson, a
third-string mafioso, and his two best friends. first was tony badamenti,
who would be don of the bergamos. the second was martin boswell, special
agent of the fbi.
when
willie and tony first met, willie was already associated with the
brooklyn-based bergamos. tony was still on the outs. but after willie
gains tony an introduction, it's tony who starts on an incredible rise
through the cosa nostra. and while willie never needed tony to tell him
how to rob, he did need tony for tutelage in the finer points-- like how
to act, what to wear, who to see, and where to be seen.
but
even with tony helping him:
getting
ahead was hard for willie. he tried hard. but he had handicaps-- like he
wasn't full sicilian and he wasn't too smart.... he learned all the rules.
but he never knew when to break them. but willie did have tony. and tony:
he had willie. for a long time, they had each other.
so
says agent boswell. and it was all true until one night during summer of
'69. on that night, tony, doing some personal work for the don lost
control and beat the life out of kevin flynn. unlike a lot of guys, kevin
was never supposed to die. but when he dies anyhow, the district attorney
insists that someone pay for the crime. through carmine's machinations,
it's willie, not tony, who goes away.
that
was ok. but what wasn't ok was the gang leaving his wife and young
daughter destitute. so when he gets out of jail and meets agent boswell,
willie, still nurturing some resentment, is willing to talk. in the years
that follow, willie opens up more and more to boswell-- albeit within
certain parameters, never about tony, and always on deep background.
somehow
it all worked-- at least until a prosecutor named lisa barone finds out
about willie and screws the deal. barone wants boswell to convince willie
to testify against tony. boswell tells her that's the craziest idea he's
ever heard. so to pressure him, the government lawyer reveals publicly
willie's double-life as an fbi informant.
all
of a sudden, the government is after willie to testify. the mob figures
that he just might. so after a lifetime on the in, willie johnson needs
all the friends he can muster. it falls to boswell and tony to help willie
find a way out.

tight
deadline:
star
publisher stella wynn washes ashore on beach on staten island. detectives
wind up at the door of novelist pete dushinsky. pete stalls the cops and
jumps out the window. running over rooftops, down fire escapes, and in and
out of back alleys, pete protests his innocence and tells his story.
pete's
story begins a year earlier. at that time, pete, a degenerate gambler, is
busy perfecting his system for betting the ncaa basketball tournament. the
system is foolproof. but somehow pete is losing big. so pete chucks his
scheme and makes a sentimental bet on wisconsin state, a heavy underdog
led by yugoslavian forward vlinius divinivics. but vlinius fouls out as
the game heads into overtime. and pete suffers his biggest loss of all.
unbeknownst
to pete, his friend and bookie phil rabinowitz had laid off pete's action.
now known gangster louie 'the butcher' calvino is holding his marker. pete
and phil go to face lou, and pete gets what looks like a break: turns out
that lou's lovely daughter camille is a fan of pete's fiction.
but
when his daughter exits, lou gets asks about the money. not wanting to
hurt lou's feelings, pete says he can raise it no problem. it's a
bald-faced lie, but one which pleases lou since he is a man who cannot
abide rejection-- an aspect of his character that forced him to abandon
his own literary ambitions many years prior.
nowhere
else to turn, pete goes to his publisher stella wynn. but stella smells
opportunity. she shames pete into the most ruinous bet of all: that he can
finish his long past due novel, in just eight days. if pete wins, he keeps
the money. if he loses, stella owns his entire life's work.
pete
is ready to pay lou, but before he can deliver, he loses the money to a
con man posing as a tourist from oklahoma. pete has nothing else to
give. so he leaves lou hanging and skips town.
pete
he checks into a cheap motel-- a place where he can hole up and write.
the problem is, the motel is in atlantic city. soon, pete is back
to gambling. except this time he is winning big. camille finds him in the
casino and begs him to cash-in. pete refuses, and soon blows it all. with
hope all but lost, camille breaks the news: camille has sold the rights to
pete's first novel to would-be movie mogul jerry delacort.
problem
is: unless pete finishes his new book, stella wynn owns the old book along
with everything else. inspired, and with camille by his side, pete finally
settles down to write.
but
when lou’s goons show up, pete and camille are forced to flee. pete
finishes the book while on the lam. but the moment camille's back is
turned, lou's guys grab him. convinced that the writer has been using his
only daughter, lou contemplates his revenge. but camille demonstrates
pete's virtue by showing her father pete's manuscript. lou agrees to spare
pete-- if it’s any good.
the
book is good. so, with the gangster's blessing, pete and camille
race back to manhattan. they arrive at the publisher's office-- five
minutes late. stella, implacable, rejects pete's work literally out of
hand.
camille
and pete turn to lou. a failed writer himself, he sympathizes. but what
can he do? camille, however, has a plan. if it works, pete will be able to
pay lou, and lou-- a bonus-- will gain the literary celebrity he has for
so long been denied.

wilbur
and me:
it’s
1942 and squadrons of curtiss p-40 warhawks take off from ohio’s wright
field. an old man watches the flyers with rapt attention. he is orville
wright. as the planes fly, the base commander, wright’s host, asks him a
question: what got him started, what made him think he could fly when no
one else could. it's not something he can answer readily, but it gets him
thinking about him and his brother-- about the story of wilbur and me.
in
his youth, wilbur wright suffered a prolonged idleness. first a hockey
accident kept him housebound for the better part of two years. after he
recovered, the young man's mother fell ill and it was left to wilbur to
care for her. by the time she died, wilbur’s hope of attending college
back east was gone. so with the 1890s bicycle craze at full height, he and
his brother went into business fixing and then building bicycles. it
wasn’t a bad life, but wilbur wanted more. why exactly, no one knows,
but he revisited his youthful fascination with “the problem of
flight.”
wilbur
enlisted his restless younger brother in his dream and together they
studied all that was known. he also studied birds. soon it came to him: a
way to control an aircraft in mid-flight. with this insight, he and
orville built a glider and traveled to kitty hawk on the outer banks of
north carolina—known for its winds—in 1900 to test his theory.
the
initial efforts were encouraging enough for the brothers to return a year
later. but that year, in 1901, they made little progress. by the time they
left the island, wilbur was convinced that man wouldn’t fly, not for a
thousand years.
it
took orville to convince him to try again. it was also orville—now fully
invested in the project—who came up with a way to test wing shapes and
sizes in their bicycle store workshop. armed with knowledge that no one
had ever had, the brothers built a new machine. when they went back to
kitty hawk, the nation’s leading flight experimenter, octave chanute,
paid them a visit. his conclusion: the wrights had surpassed their rivals.
they had solved the riddle of the winds.
it
was still left for the brothers to design and build propellers. they also
had to construct an engine that was both light and powerful. they did both
with characteristic industry and, as always, by working alone. the next
time they returned to kitty hawk they would not just glide. they would
fly.
in
1903, after a series of engine mishaps, facing a bitter cold, their
airplane took off. it wasn’t much maybe a hundred and twenty feet. but
it was the first time in the history of the world in which a machine
carrying a man had raised itself into the air by its own power, moved
under control, and, without losing speed, landed at a point as high as
that from which it started. it was, in other words, the first flight.
the
world, however, was unaware and refused to believe. chanute encouraged
them to demonstrate their machine in public. but wilbur insisted he was
not a showman. he was a scientist and businessman and he would demonstrate
nothing without a contract of sale. the problem was that without a
demonstration there would be no contract. he and orville perfected the
machine in anonymity instead.
finally,
the progress of rival aviators forced their hand. wilbur and orville
agreed to display their flyer in not one test, but two, one in france, the
other for the u.s. army.
soon
after wilbur wowed the french, orville dazzled his officials and
spectators at fort myer, outside washington dc. but while displaying the
machine’s ability to carry a passenger, orville crashed. he was badly
injured. but he was lucky. the passenger flying with him, an army
lieutenant was killed.
orville
recovered and nine months later, he and wilbur, working together, proved
their flyer. in flights over washington, the wright brothers won their
contract and everlasting fame.
