anna lee hamilton active in musical circles of the city, died at her home thursday evening, jan. 6. services will be held tuesday, jan. 11, 2005 at north united methodist church, 38th and meridian, at 11 a.m. calling will follow. she was 76. anna lee was the wife of richard e. hamilton, retired pastor of north church, with whom she celebrated fifty two years of marriage and shared ministry in churches in bloomington, evansville and thirty two years in indianapolis. her life as a performing vocal artist and teacher was joined with her great joy as a mother of three and grandmother of eight. the hospitality of her home, her gifts of friendship and encouragement, and her outreach to young children and all of every age gave her a presence which brightened individuals and groups. from her earliest years in kentucky the church, music and family formed the centers of her life and generated a spirit of gratitude and generous sharing. after graduation from depauw university she spent a year as a mission teacher among the cajun people of louisiana, a commitment echoed through the decades in mission visits in nicaragua, the baltics, bosnia, in early aids ministries in new york city and in a local tutoring program in indianapolis. as a gifted singer she studied at depauw university at the iu school of music in new york city and in heidelberg, germany during a year's residence there. she was at home in operatic roles, solo recitals, sacred music and show tunes. she served as an adjunct professor of voice at butler university and as a teacher of voice in her home. she particularly enjoyed her active association with the indiana opera theater as vocal coach and a leader in the macallister vocal competition. during the past decade she developed a similar program for high school students, traveling indiana to identify young singers for the william e. schmidt awards. she was a past president of the indianapolis matinee musicale. she founded and directed the shepherd singers, a group of senior citizens who perform frequently throughout the city in a variety of settings. as a recitalist and lifelong church vocalist, anna lee brought joy and inspiration to many. but it was her personal presence with a student, with a friend, among her family at the keyboard in a piano sing-along, molding play dough with a two year old or hosting a family holiday dinner that she shared herself with generosity and contagious joy. her family includes sons, david f. hamilton of indianapolis, his wife inge and his daughters, janet and devney; john m. hamilton of bloomington, his wife dawn, and their sons, matthew and eric; daughter, lisa hamilton of indianapolis, her husband, david and their children, hamilton, harrison, mary and anna lee; brother, william e. schmidt of evansville and sarasota, fl; a very close aunt, jean seevers of tampa and an extended circle of nieces and nephews across the country. the family requests that any memorials take the form of gifts to the program and mission endowment of north united methodist church. arrangements by flanner & buchanan funeral center.
