are a few spare of the trip stash too- navy blue polos for £15. and finally, if you haven't got a membership card yet we will be handing them out at the same time. its worth picking one up to benefit from discounts that we have arranged for you- check them out on the website. i think that is all, don't forgot to put a cheque in the pigeon hole for £15 to secure a place on the castleford snowdome trip on 22nd feb.... emma k xx back to top   14th february 2006 holiday deposits deposits are here! they can be picked up from the riverside café in the dsu on thursday and friday of this week from 11-1, please make sure you pop in and pick up your money. i am hoping that most people will be able to make one of these times, if you are not able to please email me and i can make other arrangements. i am not going to let people pick up deposits for anyone else unless they let me know in advance exactly who is coming to collect it for them. also, if there is anyone who is from queen's campus, on their year abroad or is not from durham, email me with an address and a cheque can be posted out to you. most rooms have their deposits returned in full; there are just a few small charges. however there are a number of you who have not paid for or collected your trip stash. anyone still owing £15 for their polo will have this taken out of their deposit and can collect these on thursday/friday too. we will also have the remainder of the hoodies with us if anyone still wants one- £30. i think they are mostly large sizes but come and try one on if you are interested. don’t forget- thursday/ friday – dsu, 11-1 any queries or problems, email me- e.f.kaye@durham.ac.uk emma k xx back to top   14 february 2006 agm/exec positions as mentioned before, we are going to hold our agm in the riverside cafe in the dsu on tuesday february 28th (exact time tbc). next year's exec will be voted in at this meeting. if you are interested in applying, applications close next tuesday (21st). by this time you must have handed in a manifesto to an exec member or to the club pigeon hole. no exceptions. your manifesto must have a passport sized head shot of yourself on it but otherwise can be in any format (generally why you're so great, what you'd do, skiing experience, etc etc). at the meeting, every candidate will give a one-two minute hust and then any present members will be allowed to ask questions. you do not need to necessarily be a good skier or be on the race team to apply. absolutely any member is encouraged to apply and as long as you're passionate about skiing, enjoy working in a team and having a good time then your skiing ability is largely irrelevant. for those thinking of applying we'd strongly recommend you get in touch with people in the exec this year who will be able to help you. the positions up for election are: president vice-president treasurer social secretary secretary race captain snowboard captain 8th exec member (name to be decided) just to clarify for anyone thinking of running for the new 8th exec position. it is envisaged that this new position will help the club expand in areas that have been neglected, simply because we haven't had the manpower or time in the past. for instance, they will run beginner trips either to the local dryslope in sunderland or to the snowdome in castleford, or both. this will primarily be in the first term. in the second term they will organise a freestyle trip to the snowdome for any advanced skiers wanting to try rails, jumps etc. it is also hoped they will help the v-p organise a second/larger set of stash for the trip or the second term. they may even be able to organise an inter- collegiate slalom sometime in the year or a durham individual event. because this is going to largely be a skiing position rather than an admin position a candidate with a high level of skiing/boarding would be an advantage but this is certainly not a requirement. if you have any questions about anything at all please e-mail the club or any of the exec members individually and we'll do our best to help you. love the exec back to top   13th february 2006 snowdome trip there is a castleford snow-dome trip coming up on wednesday the 22nd of february. this trip will only cost you £15 instead of the usual £20 admission and transport is also included in the price. a coach will be leaving from maiden castle car park at 5pm and return to durham for 11.30/12pm which allows you to ski or board for up to 3hrs. ski and snowboard rental is also included in this price &smp; ski wear is also available for hire too but at an additional cost. if you would like to go please put a cheque for £15 in the ski club pigeon hole at the dsu made out to: dussc in an envelope with “snow-dome” written on the front. spaces are limited so be quick. the exec x any questions email: christopher.beddoe@dur.ac.uk (snowboard captain) back to top   12th february 2006 **social** just a quick reminder that tomorrow (monday night) is our first social of the term. where: fabios (obviously) when: 8:30 until late..... free lash for everyone. fabios is opening especially for us as they are usually closed on mondays. this is the perfect way to get tanked up for free before hitting studio or klute and cos of work is likely to be our only social of the term so come and have a break from work and a free drink or two. also, this is the perfect opportunity for anyone thinking of running for an exec position later this term, to come and meet the exec and loads of other members to drum up some support. looking forward to seeing many of you tomorrow. the exec back to top   1st february 2006 agm - 28th feb! as mentioned before, the club's agm is on february 28th in the riverside cafe in the dsu at around 7pm. this will all be confirmed nearer the time. the reason i am writing so early, is that if anyone is interested in running for a position (president, vice president, treasurer, social secretary, race captain, snowboard captain, secretary and quite possibly an 8th new exec member, title tbc) they should start thinking about it now. any person wishing to run for a position must have declared their intention and handed in a manifesto to the dsu pigeon hole or a member of the exec by the 18th feb at the latest. for details of manifestoes ask an exec member, and i would strongly advise anyone thinking of running to talk to the relevant exec member this year; president: ben chance vice president: pippa angus secretary: emma clifton-brown social secretary: matt bradley treasurer: emma kaye race captain: alex niven snowboard captain: chris beddoe at the agm itself, every candidate will have to give a minute hust on why they should have the job / what they'll do etc. this will be followed by questions from members at the agm. following this there will be a show of hands to elect the winner. votes may only be cast by people present at the meeting. we all look forward to hearing from you in due course and if there is anything any of us can do to help then please get in contact with us. please also don't forget to vote as to whether or not we should establish a new exec position to organise more beginner skiing, freestyle events etc! all the best the exec xxx back to top   31st january 2006 new exec position the current exec have come to the conclusion that the club would benefit through adding an exec member to the committee as of next year. in order to ratify this we need to ask the member's opinion and give everyone an opportunity to vote. please can you reply to our club email address asap as to whether you are for or against the proposal and include any suggestions that you might have. don't worry, this has been properly thought out, apologies for the attempted name change last term! over the last few years the club has consistently expanded in every area - members, racers, castleford trips, the xmas holiday, stash sold, social turnout, and this has led to increased workload on the part of the exec. we hope that whoever leads the club in future years will continue to expand and improve durham's biggest club, but as such we think they will struggle to implement suggestions we have had from members (i.e. beginner nights at the dryslope, freestyle trips to snowdome etc etc) without a new exec member being added to the exec. this member could in turn help with other exec member's jobs and hopefully contribute to a wider range of stash. in terms of cost, there is no significant loss to the club through adding an exec member, and we hope that by adding him/her we will be able to give far more time to areas of the club that are comparatively neglected, such as beginners, freestylers etc. in comparison, the edinburgh ski club, which has roughly the same amount of members, has 16 exec members. the exec would very much welcome any feedback or questions on this and hopefully we'll receive lots of emails with opinions and suggestions. look forward to seeing many of you at the next social (13th feb. in fabios). the exec xx back to top   31st january 2006 events this term!! welcome back. we hope you all enjoyed the xmas hols, and that those of you who came to val d'isere had a great time. it's certainly cold enough in durham at the minute so it's about time to let you know the plans for the term. there will be a big social in fabio's (which is opening especially for us) on mon 13th feb. we'll send out more on this in due course. there'll be another castleford trip to the indoor snowdome on wed 22nd feb. again, further details to follow. we still have some hoodies left over from last term. they are all quite large sizes but trust me, they do shrink. mine have anyway, so if anyone wants one please e-mail the club or talk to one of the exec as we effectively have hoodies left for all sizes. please, please, please, collect your trip stash if you ordered it, and pay for it if you haven't. it is at 17 nevilledale terrace in the viaduct. if you have any queries about the stash e-mail p.c.angus@dur.ac.uk the club's agm will be on 28th feb (tbc) in dsu riverside cafe in the evening. full details will follow, but if you are interested in running for an exec position, start thinking about it now, talk to the relevant exec member and plan a manifesto. there is also the not so small matter of the busc trip of 2,500 british students to les deux alpes this easter. if anyone is interested, full details are coming soon, but if you can't wait, e-mail m.j.bradley@dur.ac.uk also, we are at the beginning of designing a new website which should hopefully be up and running in a couple of months to provide much more info and regular updates, videos, pics, forums etc. hope you all have a great term and we look fwd to seeing you at one of our socials/trips etc. the exec xx back to top   20th january 2006 busc easter trip! sorry to bother you so early into term, but i have some look forward to seeing you, ben dussc president back to top   20th november 2005 name change thanks for the excellent turnout once again at last tuesday's social, and congratulations to our two half-price holiday winners. as for the proposed name change from dussc to dusc, while in many aspects a good idea, and despite a positive vote in favour, a couple of issues arose that made members uneasy about the change, which we took into account. not least, the clash that dusc would have with the shooting, swimming, sailing clubs etc. as a result, we have no intention of changing the name of the club at this moment in time. the good news is that we fully intend to launch the new club logo within this academic year. news on this will follow soon, but we will endeavour to put the logo on the website before the end of term. hope everyone is well. it's so cold, we might as well be in the alps! the exec back to top   17th november 2005 places on trip running out places are going very fast on the trip, there are only 30 or so left so get yourself booked asap to avoid disappointment. back to top   17th november 2005 proposed renaming of the club. at this present time, despite a positive vote at the extraordinary agm, we have decided not to rename the club. this is in large part because renaming ourselves dusc presents a number of issues with the sailing, swimming and shooting clubs amongst others, who already use the acronym. however, we intend to go ahead with an excellent new club logo for all future stash. back to top   16th november 2005 2nd fabios social again a great turnout for our second social with a great atmosphere, lots of free drinks and of course our two half-price holiday winners - congratulations!
