nitro never jumped the shark instead they slammed into its side and dropped faster then a clinton intern!!!raw was edgier and flashier but wcw had jericho, benoit, booker t, the nature boy the list can go on and on. it wasnt a matter of star power it is the same problem wwe has now...terrible gimmicks, poor choices of "pushes".i almost crapped my pants on a few weeks ago when randy orton got yet another shot at a ball hes dropped repeatedly?wtfits not one specific storyline or guy its just blah now i wont watch for weeks or months at a time then tune in and seem something rehashed from last year just with new faces and piss poor matches!

nitro is notoriously guilty of jumping the shark. it's as if they'd jump the shark, realize they made a mistake, then try to fix it by jumping the shark again. in all fairness, wwe jumps the shark on occasion with raw, but not as often as nitro used to... and not as dramatically or infamously. granted, the nwo was arguably the greatest storyline in pro wrestling history, but its' constant rebirths were part of what killed wcw. and that's just one example. here's my list of nitro's "jump the shark" moments, using the guidelines set by this website, and some others:singing: the kiss performance (and demon character), curt hennig's "rap is crap" performance.i do: david flair & stacy keiblerthe movie: "ready to rumble"special guest star: david arquette, master p, dennis rodman, jay leno, karl malone, kevin greenea very special... : return of flair & reformation of the horsemen, goldberg beats hogan, return of the warriornew kid in town: goldbergexit... stage left: eddie guerrero, perry saturn, dean malenko, chris jericho, raven, big show (giant), x-pac (syxx)... most importantly, chris benoit left for wwe while he was the wcw champ.also - aside from the "new razor" and "new diesel," wrestling doesn't do much "same character, different actor." nitro did alot of "same actor, different character." when one gimmick got old, they just repackaged the guy as another character. prince iaukea/the artist, ed leslie/the disciple, vincent/shane/curly bill, devon storm/crowbar, mortis/kanyon, alex wright/berlyn.others: fingerpoke of doom, hall turns on nash, nwo reforms again (and again), nwo gets another member when it already has too many, david arquette wins the world title, the "powers that be" angle, vince russo and the "new blood", dj ran & rikki rachtman (wtf? why am i watching this?), the show goes to 3 hours, giving away the foley-championship ending of raw, flair (... and scott hall?) in the mental institution.did i get them all? on a side note, although nitro lacked ted mcginley, he probably would've been a more tolerable announcer than tony schiavone.

this comment is for wrestlnig in general. i think it jumped the shark when wrestling doesn't have much wrestling and settles for all this soap opera drama. granted the older stuff had it, but they at least wrestled and didn't do all this flying about.

it jumped the shark when it got to the point that nwo would interrupt matches that they had nothing to do with. it was just overkill, and no matches seemed to go to completion, except in pay-per-views, and maybe not even then!

there's really no point in the show that was the turning point. the show jts when aol and time warner merched and no one in that company cared about wcw. this is what started the chain reaction of bad booking, bad matches, and overall bad television that lead to the inevitable end of wcw.

its hard to pick just one moment when wcw jumped the shark. i supposed the first moment would be when the nwo storyline went on just a little too long. it was a cool storyline at first when it was just hogan, hall, and nash. but after 3/4 of the lockerroom joined the nwo and that's all that was ever talked about on the show, it just got sickening. i think the nwo storyline went on too long and made a lot of people switch the channel to wwf raw on usa.the other defining moment when the show absolutely hit rock bottom with absolutely no chance of recovery, and i think we all knew the end was near, was on april 10, 2000 when eric bischoff and vince russo stripped every wcw champion of their title. everyone from the world champ to the television champ to the tag team champs...everyone. nothing like that had ever been done before and i seriously doubt it will ever happen again. but it was the most ridiculous thing i ever saw.

the botched starrcade '97 screwjob. when nick patrick accidentally gave hogan a fair count, instead of a fast one, when hulk legdropped and pinned sting, wcw lost a ton of credibility. yes, the "fingerpoke of doom," bill goldberg's apparent lack of willingness to job, and the booking period of vince russo hurt as well, but the downward spiral of wcw monday nitro, and the entire wcw organization in general, began in the starrcade '97 main event. not to diss him and discount his usually excellent refereeing skills, but arguably nick patrick killed wcw.

wcw starrcade 1997 was a sign that wcw monday nitro was sharkbait because bret hart screwed hogan out of the wcw championship, but wcw nitro did not jump the shark until january 4th 1999 when three events happened:event #1: fans are screwed out of a promished wcw title rematch of the 1998 starrcade main event between kevin nash vs goldbergevent #2: tony reveals the world wrestling federation title match result that mick foley (wrestling as mankind) wins the title and tony says "that'll put a lot of butts in the seatsevent #3: the fingerpoke of doom!

wcw jumped when scott hall turned on kevin nash at spring stampede. it was a last ditch effort for a major story line and it was all down hill after that.

wcw nitro jumped as soon as they hired vince russo from wwf/wwe. next thing you know we get crap like david arquette becoming champion! the problems did kinda start with nash being head booker, but hiring russo was the final nail in the coffin. hopefully tna will wake up and get rid of him before it's too late.

when wcw changed bookers every 6 months and kept repeating the same angles(ex. nwo). and after january 2000 when aol/time warner merged you knew that wcw was on life-support and aol/time warner was waiting for a chance to pull the plug.

since there's a listing for the wwe/wwf shows, it's not fair to forget the competition, ted turner's wcw. the show was cheesy old school rasslin' where most of the wrestlers were cast-offs from the 80's gimmick laden wwf. the shark jump started when scott hall (razor ramon) and kevin nash (diesel) joined the wcw and it went downhill from there. the matches turned into 2 minute squash fests with no wrestling whatsoever. nash became the booker and that destroyed the company, nash even booked himself to beat bill goldberg and break his winning streak and take the wcw title. nash's nwo gimmick was beat down like a dead horse to the point where it went with a wimper. wcw's writing was as bad as well, who's idea was it to put the wcw world's title on john laroquette? watching kevin nash stomp on a mexican "luchadore" who's half his size got to be a bore after a while. the wrestling got so bad viewers switched over to wwf/wwe raw. wcw fans saw nash with his inflated ego venting in the ring while his buddy scott hall stumbled around drunk, hall was later fired by eric biscoff. vince russo came to wcw to help out with the writing but kevin nash refused to stick to the scripts. ted turner sold wcw to the wwe and the rest is history.

wcw monday nitro was great. it's first few years were good enough to compete with the wwf, and i found it to be better. the nwo was history, and it was brilliant. when that got old and wcw only had goldberg, ddp and sting left to build a show around, it got lame and it had too many wrestlers nobody cared about. eric bischoff let his previous success get to his head and because of it, caused what could've been a great business to be bough by vince mcmahon.

the downfall of wcw as a promotion is all over the previous comments but i'd like to keep it focused on this show specifically. the april 5, 1999 episode was the shark-jumping moment for nitro, right for the moment that the "star of david" logo appeared on viewers' screens. wcw changed its logo and changed the colour scheme and design of the nitro set. this might seem like a silly point for a wrestling show to jump, but the show was just lacking something at that point. for all of the idiocy that often occurred on the program, you could still sense the feeling of glory from wcw's prime by looking at that nitro logo and seeing the arena either filled or close to filled. the change of logo/set corresponded with nitro's last gasp of full arenas: the final nitro with the original intro was in toronto at a sold-out air canada centre (and also featured a kick-ass tag title match and an awesome bret hart-goldberg angle). they'd never do a live nitro in front of a sold-out house again. despite tons of horrible flaws (**cough**toomuchhogan**cough**), i miss nitro. this isn't meant as a wwe diss but i liked having the two products to compare side-by-side.
