shooting star press columnists opinions recaps results features kevin nash: the outsiderapril 5, 2003by chris fothergill-brownkevin nash appreciation weekend continues. this time, we're going to get the honest truth about his career… don't believe me? let's hear what the box has to say: the inside story on…the outsider! for the first time ever, get the straight story from the undisputed master of the jackknife powerbomb. this explosive profile follows big sexy's path of destruction from founding member of the nwo to wcw world heavyweight champion! get exclusive, uncensored interviews and never-before-seen footage from pay-per-views, wcw monday nitro and thunder. it's awesome! and wcw would never spin the truth on anything, thank god. some electric bouncy music welcomes us to the show! "wolfpac in tha house!" highlight package. get a load of the botched powerbomb on the giant - always a classic! finger poke of doom finishes the package off. nash reminds us that when you're nwo, you're nwo for life. clip of eric bischoff at great american bash 1996 - stating there's been some interruptions on nitro. nash says that at that point in time, he and scott hall were simply trying to get some attention. they felt if they were gonna make a statement, they may as well start with the vice-president of wcw. back to the clips - as bischoff refuses to name who the guys who will face the outsiders at the following ppv. in retaliation, nash throws bischoff through a table at ringside. at the time, this was huge - since nothing of the sort had even been thought about let alone attempted. nash mentions that both he and hall had been in wcw prior to their time in new york - and they felt misused. so in order to gain a little respect, they felt they had to come in and take over the company. when they got hulk hogan to join - it put them over the top. clips of bash at the beach 1996 are played - as the outsiders battle sting, lex luger, and randy savage. luger is carted out early, leaving the fans to believe he could very well be the third man. sting takes a beating for the better part of the next 10-15 minutes, while savage is desperately seeking a tag. savage does get in - but the outsiders turn to cheating. at this point, it's clear wcw's in trouble… that's when the red and yellow of hulk hogan arrived to save the day for wcw, and send the boys packing back north. however, in one of the key moments in wrestling history - hogan turns his back on randy savage, dropping the leg. the referee is tossed, hogan drops another leg, and pins savage with hall counting. the three celebrate. mean gene storms the ring to find out what the hell just happened, and hogan tells the fans he's bored, and they can stick it. nash says their biggest concern was to get a big name third guy. he said scott hall and himself walking onto nitro was big enough, but when they got hogan to turn, it put them on the map. clips are shown of the infamous "we're taking over" video. nash says that he and scott hall had no prior tag-team experience, but that aside, they had far more talent than harlem heat - the reigning wcw tag-team champs, and decided they were nothing to be afraid of. and sure enough, the clips back up his story that at halloween havoc 1996, the outsiders grabbed the world tag-team titles. december 3, 1996. the nwo takes over the commentary table. nash says he figures he needs a new career once the wrestling is done, so he got some practice in. he says it was the highest rated nitro to that point, and it was all him and scott hall. we jump ahead to great american bash 1997 - where the outsiders take on roddy piper and ric flair. i'm not really sure how this is relevant to nash's wcw story, unless they want to talk about the problems he and piper were having behind the scenes, but i doubt it. flair wanders off to beat up on syxx, which allows hall to hit the outsiders edge on piper for the pin. september 1, 1997 is the next date on our calendars, when the nwo impersonate the horsemen. syxx plays ric flair, buff bagwell is curt hennig, before we bring out kevin nash playing the role of arn anderson. backstage, this actually infuriated ric flair to no end, unaware of the sketch that was taking place until it happened. nash comes out in a neck brace and a huge gut. they mock his drinking problem. "i ain't got much to offer ya, 'cause the beer is spoken for. what i do have is a spot. a spot with the four horsemen. do you accept my spot, not a dirt spot, liver spot, their spot, dog spot, my spot." nash says he was nominated for 7 emmys. back in time we go to august 25, 1997, and we see clips of the real arn anderson retirement. flair loses it, and challenges the entire nwo to a match - so piper books the four horsemen against the nwo in a war games match. we skip ahead to nash entering the cage at fall brawl. nash absolutely destroys the horsemen by himself. heenan: "who's left?" tony: "mongo's left!" that's really re-assuring, i'm sure. late in the match, curt hennig suddenly turns his back on the horsemen, and we have ourselves a 5-3 match. everyone is handcuffed to the cage. nash wants benoit to give up…and benoit spits in his face. attaboy! none of them give in - so they powerbomb flair. flair is dragged to the side of the cage, head placed between the cage door. nash says they'll slam it shut if the horsemen don't give in. mongo gives up to protect flair…hennig gets a crazed look in his eye, and slams the door on flair's head anyway. nash says what happened was they knocked flair's skin loose, and you can still see the effects today. i know i shouldn't laugh… video highlight of the giant and kevin nash feud. neither man can touch each other - or face being fined 1.5 million dollars. nash says giant ran his mouth too long, and that there's only one giant in wrestling…and that's him. and if we watch, we'll see why the monicker "giant killer" was born. so we watch souled out clips, as giant and nash move very…very…slowly…around…the…ring. the double big boot spot looks pretty good mind you. nash throws hot coffee at the giant, and goes for the powerbomb, but can't, and drops him right on his head. he gets the pin, and giant has to be stretchered out. nash says he was asked to do a strong man contest following the match having powerbombed a 600 pound beast. back to nitro - jj dillon bans the jackknife. he says if nash ever tries it again, they'll escort him out of the building. oh, and they may prosecute. so nash promptly powerbombs ray traylor, and loses by disqualification. nash dares wcw to arrest him, and doug dillenger slips on the cuffs. nash's reason for doing the powerbomb? he said hogan told him go ahead, and he'll pay the fines with his great wealth. superbrawl viii - the outsiders take on the steiner brothers. the steiners had been chasing the tag-team titles for years, and had only briefly won them. frustration finally won over scott, because about 1 minute into the match, he beats the hell out of rick and joins the nwo, and gives the belts back to hall and nash. kevin nash and syxx take over the commentary, and send a message over to the rest of the nwo, letting them know they're pissed off with the rest of the guys, and want them focused on the business. nash and hogan have a fairly intense faceoff with the rest of the new world order gathered around. nash: "take heed to what macho man said. behind you, there may be 1…or there may be many waiting to stick a knife in your back. you don't need to worry about me, because i'll shoot you right between the eyes." if the entire nwo had beaten down hogan right there, those two main eventing the following ppv would have drawn millions. spring stampede 1998 - hogan and nash take on roddy piper and the giant in a baseball bat match. hogan decks nash by mistake, but still manages to pin roddy piper. (typical) hogan apologizes for hitting nash - nash accepts, and hogan hits him again. the next night on nitro, new world champion randy savage introduces the new nwo leader kevin nash. this was the birth of the wolfpac. later that night, nash powerbombs hogan. konnan, lex luger, and sting all verbally blow kevin nash. at slamboree 1998, the outsiders took on sting and the giant for the belts. in a move that made absolutely no sense, scott hall turned on kevin nash, joining the giant. sting decided to abandon his tag-team partner, and side with kevin nash. nash says that scott hall had problems at that time - and that it was something he had to work out. nash says he was still there for scott hall. we get highlights of their feud…which was based around scott hall being drunk all the time. a low point for both guys. so we get clips of the god awful blowoff match between the two at halloween havoc 1998. scott hall wins by countout, when nash decides he's beaten up on hall enough. nash says he wasn't going to win until he got his friend back - so he didn't care about the result of that match. the night after world war 3 1998, nash declares he's next having won the battle royal! the buildup to the world title match was big, as nash went over nearly everyone in the company in the weeks leading to starrcade. we get to the match. goldberg seems to have the match in hand, when interference from disco inferno and bam bam bigelow distract everyone. while that goes on, scott hall sneaks in, dressed like security, and stuns goldberg with a taser. nash misses the whole thing - hits the jackknife, and wins the world title. next up, 8 days later. hulk hogan comes out of retirement one last time to challenge kevin nash for the belt in his goodbye match. hall and nash re-unite before it starts. nash shoves hogan back to the corner, and hogan feigns fear. hogan gently taps nash, covers, and wins the world title. scott hall, scott steiner, hulk hogan, and kevin nash bounce around the ring, and the band is back together! goldberg rushes the ring to attack, and takes them out - but lex luger arrives on the scene and we have ourselves a massive beatdown. buff bagwell joins the crew, and belt is repainted with the nwo letters, and it's 1996 all over again. the next week, ric flair had just won the presidency of wcw and chews the guys out for having fixed a wrestling match. and that's pretty much it. what a strange way to end the video. that said, what i was expecting to be a wcw fluff job pretty well covered nash's wcw stuff from 1996 - early 1999. lots of rare footage you won't see anywhere else. videos like this are actually begging for the dvd treatment, loaded with extras. but i think i'm dreaming in technicolor. our weekend wraps up tomorrow as we take a look at the moment that many pinpoint as being the beginning of the end of wcw - where kevin nash books himself over bill goldberg, starrcade 1998! interested in writing for shooting star press? no experience required! just e-mail chriscfgb@hotmail.com for more information.copyright 2002 by chris fothergill-brown.
