the nwo: a history: from its origins in wcw to its current incarnation in the wwf, we explore the tangled story of this notorious faction - national wrestling organization, world championship wrestlingwrestling digest,
june, 2002
by steve anderson
for fans of professional fling, memorial day was never so memorable.
when back in 1996 scott hall jumped the ringside barrier and entered a wcw ting to announce that the "invasion" was on, it changed wrestling history. two weeks later, kevin nash joined his ex-wwf cohort to fill the second portion of the three-piece puzzle.
the mystery of the "third man" was resolved at bash at the beach on july 7, 1996, when hulk hogan changed from the primary colors of yellow and red to black and white. re-christened the heel "hollywood" hogan, the ex-hero announced that a new force would rule professional wrestling.

"this right here is the future of wrestling," hogan told the crowd. "you can call this the new world order of wrestling, brother."
the nwo was born.
the invasion was truly on in more than one way. wcw executive vice president eric-bischoff was bound and determined to compete with the wwf juggernaut. weary of being professional wrestling's "also-ran," bischoff forced time warner to open up its coffers to sign wwf superstar hall and nash to lucrative contracts. others followed.
with new talent in his stable, bischoff provided them with an instant gimmick called the new world order. former wwf stars syxx (formerly the 1-2-3 kid, now x-pac), ted dibiase, and vincent (formerly virgil) joined hall and nash to add to the insurgence. where would it stop? the enemy from the north was invading the southern home team.

wcw's ratings began to rise. "nitro" was leading "raw" in the all-important nielsen numbers. for the first time since anyone could remember, the wwf was second-best to the wcw/nwo's own version of the proverbial juggernaut. the careers of hogan, hall, nash, syxx, and dibiase were reborn. fans were tuning in to "nitro" and "thunder" to see the latest antics of the rebellious clique.
too much of a good thing
soon enough though, the smooth ride became a rocky road. the souled out pay-per-view in 1997 had the buys, but was largely panned by critics and fans. the nwo began to add member after member, and not from the wwf or upper echelon of wcw. lesser-known stars such as stevie ray and scott norton were earning membership in the once-elite group. quantity replaced quality. the tried-and-true formula was tweaked beyond recognition. factions developed within the nwo with hogan leading the "black and white" division and kevin nash overseeing his "red and black wolfpac."
two restarts in 1999 and 2000 failed to reignite fan interest in the nwo. in many ways, it seemed that the creative forces at wcw were not interested in the nwo as the reunions were dropped without fan-fare. in many ways, the plight of the nwo reflected the plight of wcw. what was once powerful was now weak. what was once popular was now laughable. what was once creative was now stale.
a new start
when vince mcmahon signed the check to purchase wcw, he also bought all ancillary licenses associated with his former competitor. he tried and failed to restart it under his own banner. that move fell short in generating interest for either organization. running out of ideas in his own bag of flicks as 2001 came to a close, mcmahon dipped into another wcw gimmick, the new world order.
wcw's failure as an "invader" was based upon a lack of star power. the big names were not involved in the "alliance." this time around, mcmahon was determined to do it right the first time. despite past bravado to the contrary and locker room problems, the nwo would be composed of the returning hulk hogan, scott hall, and kevin nash.
all three men were immediately elevated to main-event status. hogan went after the rock while hall focused on steve austin. nash played the role of bodyguard/spoiler/agitator. unlike its wcw incarnations, this nwo was a pure heel group. they did not court the favor of the fans with smirks and sarcastic remarks. through words and actions they targeted wwf babyfaces.
hogan was the anomaly of the three. despite his heel status and 18-wheel truck attack on the rock, fans were cheering for hogan. perhaps it was out of nostalgia. perhaps it was out of respect for the grizzled veteran. while jeers rained down on hall and nash, hogan soaked in the cheers. it was something that the wwf's nwo could ill afford.
if the nwo is being cheered or its members are encouraging fan favor, it only takes away all-important heat from the wwf babyfaces. the faction's popularity in wcw was precisely its problem. the more the nwo swaggered and quipped, the more the fans came to love the anti-heroes. wcw was in a quandary. the enemy group was more popular than the embattled heroes. creating a babyface "wolfpac" only diluted the effectiveness of the gang. fan favoritism went against the very mantra that established the nwo.
goodbye hollywood
wrestlemania x-8 clinched hogan's babyface status. the canadian "hulkamaniacs" drowned out fans of the rock with their cheers and chants. ironically, the rock's boos drowned out any disapproval for hogan. that clinched hogan's fate in the nwo. responding to fans who wanted to cheer for hogan, the creative team gave the people what they wanted--a newly heroic hogan. he was still clad in the black and white, but he was heroic nonetheless.
