of the six g-14 clubs in european action on wednesday night only marseille and porto secured a win. real madrid took home a valuable point from rome but liverpool, ac milan and valencia all suffered narrow defeats.
marseille win all g-14 duel
marseille produced the biggest shock of the night by beating liverpool 1-0 at anfield. it was the perfect start for new coach eric gerets and the french club's website, www.om.net, described the win in just one word – "historic!" eric gerets was delighted with his team: "i'm proud of my players. they made history this evening. obviously, i am content and i am rather proud of my players. they made some small technical errors but very few tactical errors. for that, i am extremely content". liverpool manager, rafa benítez, made no attempt to look for excuses at the post match press conference as reported on www.liverpoolfc.tv: "that could be the worst performance since i came here, especially at home. we didn't create much from the beginning". however, defender jamie carragher remains confident liverpool will progress beyond the group stage: "we are making it tough for ourselves but there's still four games in which we can get enough points".
undeserved defeats
there was no revenge for valencia for last season's cl quarterfinal defeat at the hands of chelsea. the spanish side scored after just nine minutes but the premier league outfit hit back with two goals to take the three points. the general feeling in the valencia camp was that they deserved a better return against a side that made the most of their few chances. valencia coach, quique sánchez flores told www.valenciacf.es: "it wasn't fair, but that was the result".
meanwhile, milan seemed to have secured a point in their visit to glasgow but a goal in the 90th minute handed celtic a surprise win. carlo ancelotti echoed the comments of his colleague at valencia in his post match analysis as reported on www.acmilan.com: "we are disappointed; i don't think we deserved to lose. it was a difficult match, played on a slippery pitch which did not allow us to play the ball on the ground. it became a hard-fought match, we fought back blow for blow. we played well, compactly. it's too bad we lost, the draw would have been fairer".
a positive draw
van nistelrooy gave real madrid the lead twice in their match against lazio in rome but the italians responded both times to secure a 2-2 draw. however, real coach, bernd shuster, assured www.realmadrid.com that he was reasonably happy with the result: "they scored their second goal when we were at our best. we had the game under control and they weren't having any chances, but losing the ball in midfield complicated things for us. nevertheless, i think the draw has been positive".
porto leave it late
porto chalked up a valuable win against besiktas in turkey thanks to a goal from ricardo quaresma in the second minute of injury time. the portuguese international forward told www.fcporto.pt after the match: "we worked well in a fantastic environment, where everyone likes to play. we knew that we had a very difficult atmosphere waiting for us and i believe we can congratulate ourselves for the work and the result. i have faith in this team and i knew that sooner or later we would score".
