history: a former basketball player at university of tennessee, kevin nash always considered himself an athlete. he averaged 5.1 points and 4.2 rebounds at tennessee, then left there to try his hand at a professional basketball career, playing some overseas. he was even invited to a cleveland cavaliers basketball camp. but when he injured his knee, kevin nash's career went in a different direction.
after the knee injury healed to an extent, nash entered the world of professional wrestling, training at the power plant. he began his wrestling career as the bodyguard of woman, who was at that time managing doom. this quickly fell through, and nash later appeared as steel, a member of the master blasters in the nwa. although nash and partner al green worked well as a team, they were never given a good shot. nash then tried again as oz, with a green coat and silver hair. he was managed by "the wizard" (kevin sullivan). again, the fans were not swayed, so after a few months, in came vinnie vegas, a very large casino bouncer. he made his first appearance at clash of the champions xviii, where he quickly defeated tommy rich. he joined harley race's stable and teamed briefly with mr. hughes, then moved on to the diamond mine with diamond dallas page, the diamond studd (scott hall), tommy flamingo (raven), and the freebirds. this gimmick earned him a little more respect, but mainly did not get him the recognition he was looking for. it was soon after when nash moved to the wwf.
in 1993, diesel appeared on the scene of the world wrestling federation. beginning as the bodyguard of shawn michaels, nash aided the heart break kid to many victories. he then began wrestling for himself, and made a major impact at the royal rumble 1994. after eliminating many of the first combatants into the rumble, he seemed to earn the fan's respect, as they cheered every time he tossed someone. it took nearly half a dozen wrestlers to get rid of him, as he finally took it to the next level. over the next few months, he stayed with shawn michaels, now as a partial tag-team. with michaels' help, he defeated razor ramon (hall) for the intercontinental championship. "diesal" then became a major force in the wwf, including battling bret hart for the world title at king of the ring (where he won via dq when neidhart interfered).
diesal also earned some more gold, when he and michaels defeated the headshrinkers at a house show to become tag-team champions. a few days later, though, after an accidental kick by michaels, diesal lost the intercontinental strap back to razor ramon. this started friction between the two wrestlers, which culminated at survivor series '94, when michaels again missed a kick and hit diesel. the friendship was over, and the tag-team titles were stripped from them. diesel didn't stay without gold long, though, as he easily crushed bob backlund to become the wwf world heavyweight champion. diesal would go on to feud with bret hart, shawn michaels, sid vicious, king mabel, yokozuna, and others within the next few months. he also reteamed with michaels, and nearly won the tag-team titles again over yokozuna and owen hart. however, since the british bulldog had substituted for owen at the beginning, owen wasn't the legal man in the match, yet was the man pinned. the tag titles had to be returned.
at survivor series '95, nearly a year after winning the world title, diesal was defeated by bret "hitman" hart. he immediately took out his anger on hart, powerbombing him repeatedly. diesal had gone heel again, and showed his anger in violent matches with bret, his brother owen, the undertaker, michaels, and other wrestlers. at one pay-per-view, diesal got a world title shot against bret hart in a steel cage. near the end, though, nash was surprisingly pulled through a hole in the ring by the undertaker, costing him the match. the two big men started a great feud, with moments like nash destroying one of the undertaker's caskets, while finding 'himself' laying in another one. at wrestlemania xii, the two met up, with the undertaker surviving multiple powerbombs and getting the victory. this was one of diesal's last moments in the wwf sun.
nash, along with his friend scott hall, signed a contract with wcw, leaving behind the federation where he made it big. in his last match as a wwf wrestler, the infamous "kayfabe" incident took place. after their matches, (diesal vs. michaels, razor ramon vs. triple h), nash, hall, michaels, and hunter hearse helmsley hugged and said their farewells in front of the fans, breaking the "secret good vs. evil" pact. nash and hall then left for wcw.
in the spring of '96, scott hall made his first appearance in wcw, alone, stating that they were going to take over. he also said that the "big man" would be there soon. the next week, hall called out for the "big man", and was joined by kevin nash. nash & hall both called out the three best wrestlers of wcw, wanting to show how great they were. this was the formation of the outsiders. at the great american bash, they were told by president eric bischoff that they would get their chance at bash at the beach. bischoff did not, however, tell them who they would be facing. in response, bischoff was powerbombed through the stage. for the next few weeks, hall & nash appeared sporadically on wcw television, immediately becoming two of its main stars. it was announced that, at bash at the beach, they'd be facing sting, "macho man" randy savage, and lex luger. it was a mystery who their third partner would be.
during the match, the outsiders fought by themselves, leaving the third partner a mystery. they managed to injure luger, however, making the odds even. near the end of the fight, hulk hogan ran out, apparently to take luger's place. instead, he dropped the big leg on savage, joining with the outsiders. in one of the most infamous moments in wrestling history, hogan turned heel, forming with the outsiders the new world order, the most powerful organization to challenge the wcw in years. nash, hall, and hogan quickly recruited as many wrestlers as they could, including getting president bischoff on their side, and the nwo became a huge power, almost as strong as wcw was at the time. in october '96, nash and hall defeated harlem heat to become the wcw tag-team champs. the two held the belts for almost a year, until a knee injury sidelined nash. syxx quickly subbed for him in a title defense, and along with hall lost the belts back to the steiner brothers in october '97.
when nash's knee recovered from the surgery, he and hall returned stronger than ever, beating the steiners in january '98 to earn their belts back. he also began his infamous feud with the giant, claiming the he was, in fact, the true giant of wcw. he coerced the giant into signing a contract which stated that he couldn't touch nash until souled out, then taunted the big man, throwing coffee into his face at one point. the giant's frustrations were let out one night, when he tore down a wrestling ring with his bare hands (see photo gallery). the feud truly moved to a new level at souled out, when nash slipped during a powerbomb attempt and dropped the giant on his neck. although this was an accident, wcw played it like nash had done it on purpose, and banned the jackknife powerbomb. nash didn't care, calling himself the big sexy giant killer. he became famous for a while by continuing to powerbomb wrestlers, and getting taken away from the ring in handcuffs.
in early february, the steiners again won the tag-team belts from the outsiders. a few weeks later, at superbrawl viii, nash and hall became wcw tag-team champions for the third time, thanks to scott steiner betraying his brother and joining the nwo. soon, though, problems would develop in the group that nash had helped form. first off, the giant returned, seeking revenge on the man who had injured him. the giant and nash had many battles during the next couple of months. nash also started having disagreements with "macho man" randy savage, then with hollywood hogan himself. the two men were slated to face the giant and "rowdy" roddy piper in a bat match at spring stampede, and did win the match, although hogan did hit nash with a bat at one point. later on in the night, hogan tried to make savage lose to the world champion sting, but nash reappeared, powerbombing sting (the jackknife had been reinstated due to the giant's wishes) and helping savage win the title.
nash broke off from the hollywood hogan nwo a few days later, and formed nwo wolfpac along with savage. soon he had also recruited konnan and curt hennig to stand against hogan. but hogan recruited as well, replacing nash with the giant! this again renewed the feud between the two wrestlers, which led to a tag-team title match between the nwo giant & sting (who was undecided at the time) and the outsiders. hall, however, turned on his long-time partner, allowing the giant & sting to get the straps. this started a simmering feud between hall & nash, with the two outsiders finally aparently to go at it. nash managed a major victory in recruiting, though, when he first got lex luger into the wolfpac, followed shortly thereafter by luger's friend, sting. when sting defeated the giant in a singles bout, he was allowed to choose his partner to hold the tag-team belts. he chose big sexy.
nash and sting held the wcw tag-team titles for more than a month before losing it to hall and the giant, thanks to interference from bret hart. nash then continued to lead the wolfpac against nwo hollywood, usually going after scott hall. at road wild '98, nash was involved in a battle royale. he eliminated himself to go after hall, who has just been eliminated as well. big sexy also had some problems with bill goldberg, the current champion. the two squared off many times, usually after one had accidentally hit the other. nash's ties with the wolfpac were also strained, as, after diamond dallas page turned him down, nash powerbombed him. at fall brawl '98, nash led his wolfpac into a three-team war games match. in the end, diamond dallas page came out the victor, getting the title shot at halloween havoc. nash, however, had other things to worry about.
during september '98, scott hall began showing up the matches either stoned or drunk. nash pleaded with his old friend to stay in the back. hall responded by asking where his old friend was while hall's life was falling apart. after repeated drunken brawls (usually won by nash), big sexy got a match signed with hall at the next ppv. when halloween havoc rolled around, nash seemed to have to it won, after hitting hall with 2 consecutive jackknife power bombs. he then left the ringm not bothering with the cover. nash was counted out, allowing hall the win, unconscious though he was. a few days later, hall tricked nash into trying to reconcile, then, with the giant's help, threw him through a wall, showing that the two men had not settled their differences. yet at world war iii '98, the rematch between the two did not occur, as nash and hall fought side-by-side against nwo hollywood, thanks to nash making the save. but when hall put up the wolfpac sign, nash just walked away. later that night, nash won the world war iii match over the other 59 competitors in the three rings, dominating the competition and earning a shot against the then-undefeated-champion, bill goldberg.
at starrcade, nash and goldberg fought a spirited match which was ruined by interference by the disco inferno, bam bam bigelow, and finally scott hall, who used a taser on goldberg, leaving him weak enough to be powerbombed by nash. nash then pinned him to become the wcw world champ, not to mention becoming the first man to defeat goldberg. but nash claimed that he wasn't satisfied with the victory. he claimed that he wanted to defeat goldberg one-on-one, and demanded a rematch be set up on an upcoming nitro.
a few weeks later, at the first nitro of '99, nash was scheduled in a rematch with goldberg, but instead it worked out that he faced hollywood hogan. this turned out to be a swerve, as nash allowed hogan to pin him. nash, scott hall, and later lex luger all joined with hogan and scott steiner to form a new version of the nwo wolfpac, reuniting the original nwo. they then began their wars against wcw once again. they started by putting together a "true giant" match between the giant (who was still officially nwo) and nash. with the help of scott hall and a mechanic's wrench (left there by bischoff), nash eliminated the giant from wcw (paul wight then went to the wwf as the big show). the next task was taking down the latino world order, which had been started by eddie guerrero. it wasn't long before the lwo was gone from wcw. during the destruction of the lwo, nash and luger started to feud with rey misterio jr and their former partner in the wolfpac, konnan. the 4 were scheduled to meet at superbrawl ix, but luger was injured, so scott hall took his place. it was a "misterio's mask vs. miss elizabeth's hair" match. thanks to assistance from luger, hall and nash defeated misterio and konnan, winning misterio's mask.
at the next nitro, nash offered to give the mask back to misterio, but misterio instead took him on in a match. nash was shockingly defeated after his jackknife powerbomb was reversed in midair. nash continued to come after misterio, defeating him at uncensored (once again with help from luger). nash then headed back into the world title picture. he started challenging the current champs, but settled at spring stampede for a rematch against goldberg. goldberg, though, avenged his only loss, defeating nash. this did not deter big sexy, who continued to challenge for the title. he got the president, ric flair, to sign a contract that said he had a world title match at slamboree '99.
at the ppv, nash fought diamond dallas page for the world title. although "macho man" randy savage tried to interfere, he was stopped by eric bischoff, who allowed the match to go on. nash then hit his jackknife powerbomb, defeating page and winning the wcw world heavyweight title for the 2nd time. this time, nash did not quickly give up the title to hogan. during late may and early june of '99, nash continued the feud with savage. it started with savage putting lipstick on nash's face after attacking him. nash answered this by pouring raw sewage into savage's limo. when savage appeared at the next event with a bucket of fermented slop, nash was ready. he tricked savage into turning his back, while a lady came out of the bag nash had left in the ring and poured the slop on savage. however, the night ended badly for nash, as savage had someone in a hummer ram the limo he was in repeatedly, smashing up the limo, and, apparently, nash.
at the great american bash, nash, with bad ribs from the car wreck, fought a good match with savage. he kicked out from the big elbow, powerbombed savage, and took out his ladies. however, before he could finish savage off, sid vicious reappeared in wcw, grabbing nash and powerbombing him. this gave nash the win via dq, so he still retained the world title. nash then began a month long war with sid and randy savage, defending his world title. he was aided, on occasion, by sting, but the hummer issue kept coming up, as it was suspected that sting might have been driving the automobile. when flair and piper signed the match for the next ppv, having sting and nash tag together to face savage and sid, things looked bleak. another stipulation was added right before the bash at the beach '99: that the title would be on the line for whoever got the pinfall. thanks to gorgeous george's interference, randy savage pinned nash and got the win and the title.
the next nitro, there was a pronounced change in kevin nash. he came out and cost savage the title, powerbombing him for hulk hogan. nash then challenged hogan for the title at road wild, which hogan accepted. nash then made it personal, attacking horace, hogan's nephew. strangely, nash then formed a partnership with both rick steiner and his nemesis from a month earlier, sid vicious. they began fighting against hogan, sting, and bill goldberg. the pressure increased, however, the nitro before the ppv, when hogan put his career on the line for the title match. since nash lost in the nitro main event (hogan, sting, goldberg vs. nash, sid, steiner), his career also was at stake, making the match a loser leaves town world title match.
at road wild '99, nash and hogan met up in a fierce battle. although nash landed the jackknife powerbomb, hogan was able to kick out. later, hogan hit the big leg drop, and made the pin, to retain the world title and to apparently cost nash his wcw career. nash would disappear from the scene for a few months, as other wrestlers took on the weight of the wrestling world. in the later months of '99, nash reappeared at ringside with scott hall, the two watching matches and making comments to roving reporters. this soon got them a challenge from bill goldberg, who disliked them being at ringside. soon, the outsiders were wrestling again, drawn back in by the front office. a most memorable moment was when the outsiders 'wrestled' a female team, and laid down for the 'pin'.
the outsiders soon began a major feud with goldberg and bret hart, bringing in sid vicious as their third teammate. the outsiders continued to battle against goldberg and hart, including a fight where, as special guest referee, nash helped hall win the us title in a texas tornado match, against hart, vicious, and goldberg. one thing to note was that nash started to say that he was "getting the band back together", a strange thing to say at the time. the feuds soon shifted slightly, as the outsiders, with jeff jarrett, began a three-way war against hart & chris benoit, and goldberg & vicious. after hart & goldberg defeated creative control to get the tag-team titles, the outsiders immediately laid down a challenge at the next card. in the match, it was mostly 2-on-1, with goldberg vs. the outsiders. hart showed up near the end, but his bad knee gave out, allowing him to be pinned. the outsiders became the tag-team champions for a fourth time.
at starrcade '99, nash returned to the pay-per-view scene. nash faced off against sid vicious in a powerbomb match. vicious got the first powerbomb, but the referee was down. jarrett then came down and hit vicious with a guitar, leaving him open for nash. nash was unable to get vicious up for a powerbomb, however. but he managed to trick the barely-conscious referee that he had, and got the victory. at the next card, hart vacated the world title, because of what happened with goldberg and piper (check their bios to know more). at that nitro, hart and goldberg once again fought, this time for the vacated title. the outsiders and jarrett came to the ring as well, and a massive swerve took place, as hart beat down goldberg with them to get the world title back. nash proclaimed that "the band was back together", and the new world order reformed at the beginning of the new millenium.
unfortunately, soon after, hall developed a knee injury, and surgery was required. thus, the tag-team titles were vacated, and the outsiders were broken up again. this did not slow nash, as he immediately entered the tournament, promising that "scott" would show up. in the first battle, against sid vicious and the wall, scott did show up - scott steiner. nash & steiner won the match and moved on in the tournament. they also threw sid into his car, and ran over it with a monster truck, putting sid out of wcw temporarily. later in the tag-team tournament, nash & steiner defeated pg-13 and the harris brothers, but due to interference from arn anderson, they lost in the finals to david flair & crowbar. nash then began a short feud with the new commissioner of wcw, terry funk. the two wrestlers met in a hardcore clash at souled out '00, and nash again worked his way to a victory, making himself the commissioner. nash then tried to use the power for his own use, forcing sid vicious to battle against don harris, then himself, to win the vacated world title (benoit had won it, then left the company). nash also outlawed vicious' powerbomb.
the plans backfired, though, as vicious stole jarrett's guitar from him and knocked out nash with it, getting the victory and, apparently, the world title. but "commissioner" nash wasn't through yet. he stripped vicious of the title, since vicious pinned harris in the first match instead of jarrett, who was supposed to fight sid. he then proclaimed that he, instead, was the world champion. this lasted for one day, before he was defeated in a steel cage triangle match by vicious, with ron harris the other competitor. the next weekend, during a house show, nash injured his ankle, and was out of action for some time. he handed the commissionership over to jarrett for a few weeks, then took back his power, stating that he didn't believe jarrett had done a good enough job. this started heat between the two wrestlers, especially after nash made jarrett have to fight scott hall for #1 contendership against world champion sid vicious. the match between jarrett and hall ended in a double disqualification, and nash used his power again, making both men the #1 contender. when nash decided that jarrett's allies the harris brothers couldn't be at ringside, jarrett snapped, knocking out nash with his guitar. nash then disappeared for a time, while jarrett took on his commissioner powers and reinstated the harris brothers for the main event (he still lost).
nash made his big return after eric bischoff & vince russo took control, to run wcw their way. with bischoff & russo forming the new blood, a group of younger wrestlers determined to get a shot, nash came back to wrestling and sided with the millionaire's club, the more experienced group. he was on crutches, but soon became the main spokesperson for the millionaires. his injury didn't stop mike awesome, the newcomer to wcw, attacking him. nash returned the favor at spring stampede '00, hitting awesome with his crutch to help scott steiner move on in the us title tournament. nash and awesome continued to feud, while nash also teamed with hulk hogan, sting, luger, and other superstars against the filthy animals and other groups. nash and awesome even had it out in an ambulance match, which ended after diamond dallas page ran out to hit the diamond cutter on awesome. nash then powerbombed awesome through a table, giving a severe ending to their feud.
nash also aided ric flair, who had won the world title from jeff jarrett during a nitro, only to have it stripped from him due to 'medical reasons' in the next week. nash began a major feud with jarrett, meeting on consecutive nitros in bloody battles, while vince russo tried to interfere to keep jarrett the champion. scott steiner came in on nash's side, though, leveling the playing field, and with a fair ref, nash defeated jarrett to become the world champion again, for a fourth time. he didn't keep the belt long, though, surprisingly giving it back to flair the next week, claiming that since flair never lost it, he still deserved to wear it. however, flair lost the belt back to jarrett that night, and nash soon became the #1 contender again, set to face jarrett at the great american bash '00. the new blood tried to wear nash down before the ppv, but nash persevered, with the aid of scott steiner and bill goldberg.
at the pay-per-view, nash seemed to have complete control despite everything the new blood could throw at him. despite attacks from the filthy animals and "the cat" ernest miller being the ring enforcer, nash stayed in it. near the end of the fight, bill goldberg came down, apparently to aid nash. instead, goldberg took nash down, giving jarrett the win and the title defense. goldberg became the hired gun of the new blood, and nash immediately wanted vengence. he challenged goldberg many times, going after the big man in numerous battles, including a 20-man battle royale that couldn't keep the two men apart. goldberg also raised the stakes, getting hold of scott hall's wcw contract, and saying that, if nash wanted to get his hands on it, he had to come to bash at the beach and defeat him for it. this made it deadly serious for nash, since this was the only chance to get hall back in wcw.
when bash at the beach '00 came around, nash and goldberg met in a very violent match. once again, though, nash was betrayed, as his other ally, steiner, turned on him, helping goldberg to the victory. goldberg then tore up scott hall's contract, apparently making sure that hall would never return to wcw. nash immediately declared war on both steiner and goldberg, going after both men throughout the next month. he also made sure that the two weren't a strong team, as each believed he was the rightful #1 contender. the three met in a triangle contender's match at new blood rising, although goldberg 'walked out' on the match halfway through, cursing russo along the way. nash took advantage by powerbombing steiner, making himself the #1 contender to the strap.
nash's attitude towards the fans began to change again with the prospect of gold on the horizon. he managed a small swerve on the world champion booker t, raising his hand before powerbombing him. nash then joined his former adversaries, teaming with scott steiner, jarrett, and russo, among others. a few weeks later, nash and booker t were booked in a world title match on nitro, with scott steiner as the ringside enforcer and jarrett as the referee. needless to say, the odds were against the champion. after a guitar shot from jarrett on booker, nash was able to get the powerbomb and walk out of nitro the world champion for the 5th time in his career. nash still had to face booker t at fall brawl, however. the wrestlers battled it out in a steel cage, keeping any interference away from the ring. booker t pulled out the victory over nash, taking the title back. nash then fell out with the new blood, unhappy with russo's motivation.
he reappeared in october '00, aiding some of the younger wrestlers in the natural born thrillers. he aided mike sanders, helping him win the cruiserweight title from elix skipper, and continued to work on teaching the younger guys his skills. he began calling himself "coach" kevin nash and helped out the natural born thrillers whenever possible. in november, however, "perfectsean" stasiak turned on him, knocking him out during a main event world title match against booker t. when nash tried to get revenge on stasiak, the rest of the natural born thrillers betrayed him, attacking him en masse. this was the end of his coaching days.
after various skirmishes with the entire stable, nash found himself an ally in diamond dallas page, calling him a man he could trust. they called themselves the insiders, in tribute to nash's old partner, hall. it didn't take them long to go after the tag-team titles, which were around the waists of the perfect event, chuck palumbo and "perfectsean" stasiak. at mayhem, the two groups finally met for the belts, with the rest of the natural born thrillers trying to interfere, dressed as security. fortunately for the insiders, ceo ric flair came out and banished the thrillers from ringside. with the odds evened, nash got the jackknife powerbomb and the victory, bringing the tag-team titles back to big sexy, or so it seemed. at the next nitro, "commissioner" mike sanders pointed out that nash had pinned the wrong man, and, therefore, the belts went back to the perfect event. a reluctant flair was forced to agree, but quickly signed a rematch between the two teams for starrcade. as you can imagine, this didn't go over well with the insiders, who continued their war with the natural born thrillers for the next few weeks.
at starrcade '00, the perfect event and the insiders once again faced off for the tag-team titles, and once again, both the thrillers and ceo ric flair played major parts. flair warned sanders that if he stepped into the ring, the belts would be the insiders automatically, keeping the "commish" at bay. the rest of the thrillers rushed the ring during the match, but while page held them off, nash got off another powerbomb, and the insiders won again, this time officially becoming the champions. this was nash's sixth time to hold the tag-team titles, with his third partner. the thrillers, though, weren't through, as palumbo changed partners (joining with sean o'haire) and came back for another shot at the gold at wcw sin.
things looked good for the insiders, since sanders had lost his commissionership to ernest miller earlier in the night. this helped to keep the rest of the thrillers away from ringside, at least in the beginning. the insiders dominated once again, but were betrayed when lex luger and buff bagwell came out and interfered. totally buff had already been named #1 contenders to the tag belts, and proved that they didn't want to face ddp or big sexy by costing them the win and the titles. luger and buff later that night joined with flair, scott steiner, jeff jarrett, and the "mystery man" road warrior animal, forming a new heel stable. it didn't take long for nash & page to find a new target.
the next nitro, steiner, then the world champ, tried to make alex wright the next #1 contender. big sexy ruined that plan, though, by powerbombing wright through the stage. he then declared himself the next #1 contender, challenging his former nwo mate. after defeating buff bagwell, even with luger as the referee, nash made it official. nash and steiner both launched sneak-attacks throughout the month, including nash holding david flair hostage to get his demands from the ceo, ric. however, there were health concerns with nash, as it seemed that one of steiner's beatings left him unable to walk. it was also made official by the ceo (after the injury, of course) that the match would be a loser retires match.
at superbrawl: revenge, nash was brought to the ring in a wheelchair, with a cast apparently wrapped around his leg. as steiner laughed, telling the ref to start the countout and end nash's run in wcw, nash suddenly rose, threw off the cast, and entered the ring, nailing steiner with his own title and covering him, apparently getting the victory and the world title within seconds! however, flair quickly came out, declaring that the match was actually 2 out of 3 falls. nash and steiner then took it to the outside, where midajah, steiner's valet/"freak", hit nash with a lead pipe. flair again changed the match, saying that falls count anywhere, which allowed steiner to get the pinfall on the outside to tie things up. the wrestlers fought for another 10 minutes, each knowing what was on the line. in the end, nash got the powerbomb on steiner, but then was attacked by midajah. nash withstood the attack, though, and sideslammed the valet. during this, though, flair knocked out the referee, even as steiner got a chair to knock out nash with. steiner then put on his steiner recliner, and a second ref declared the match over with. nash lost, and thus, was forced to retire.
nash was gone for the last month of the turner-run wcw, and did not appear for the season finale. he was quoted as saying that he was fine with sitting for 10 months, letting his guaranteed contract pay off.
