message
from the ceo
when i reflect on all that united cerebral palsy has
accomplished in the last
60 years, i am overcome with a sense of awe. there is
an old saying, “just as the hand held before the eye can
hide the tallest mountain, so the routine of everyday
life can keep us from seeing the radiance and secret
wonders that fill the world.” sometimes we just need to
take a step back, get away from our day to day routines
so we can enjoy the radiance and secret wonders of ucp.
if those founding parents could see what we have done
over the past six decades, they would be so proud. back
then there were no services for their children and no
access to public schools. they started their own day
program for their children inside a white stucco house
in south central los angeles.
do you think they could have dreamed that from the
seed they planted 60 years ago, a little organization
operated by volunteer parents would become the united
cerebral palsy of today? if they could only see us now!
the ingredients for our success and growth are the
vision and fortitude of those pioneering families. add
to this a competent, dedicated professional staff and,
last but surely not least, our generous, caring and
committed volunteers and donors. if one of the
ingredients is missing, we simply would not be the ucp
of today.
across five southern california counties, from orange
county to san luis obispo, every day over 800 children
and adults with developmental disabilities and their
families receive ucp services, participate in ucp
programs and live in ucp homes and apartments.
as i flip through the pages representing six decades,
i would like to congratulate all who have become
involved with our organization.
each and every day, you create new success stories.
you keep our mission alive and our legacy strong, more
than 60 years after it began.
thank you.
ronald s. cohen, ph.d.
executive director and ceo
message
from the president
dear friends,
there are so many things to take pride in as ucp
approaches its 60th anniversary. among them is the
respitality program that provides a much-needed break
for parents taking care of children with developmental
disabilities. there are ucp’s innovative day programs,
and the beautiful assisted care and independent living
facilities that provide homes for hundreds of
individuals who need our help to maintain their
independence.
they are the finest programs and facilities of their
kind, the best in the country. they are unsurpassed
because, over the years, ucp has received the continuing
support of so many generous and dedicated donors.
another great source of pride for our organization are
ucp’s volunteer and professional leaders. board members
and executive staff possess tremendous energy, integrity
and dedication. for sixty years, starting with a small
group of parents, men and women volunteering their time
to serve on the board have seen to it that ucp has grown
to serve individuals in five counties without ever
losing sight of its mission. they have closely monitored
its fiscal policies, endeavoring to guarantee its future
financial security. and now, ensuring that security,
continuity and dedication to purpose, we are very
pleased to welcome second-generation family members to
the board.
ucp’s employees, from executive director to direct
care providers, are exceptional. many of them recently
celebrated their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th and 25th year
anniversaries with ucp, an incredible record in any
organization. they are enthusiastic and tireless in
their efforts, and they make jobs that would seem
daunting to most of us look easy.
on behalf of the board of directors, i would like to
express our sincere gratitude to each of our generous
friends and donors, and to the volunteers and staff who
help to make ucp such a unique and successful
organization. there is so much to celebrate, and so much
to look forward to in the next 60 years!
ellen kessler
president, board of directors
60
years of independence started here...
way back in 1945!!
back in the forties, people didn’t know a great deal
about cerebral palsy, so there wasn’t much available in
the way of housing, help or hope.
parents of children with developmental disabilities
had very few places to turn. in 1945, a determined group
of parents in los angeles got together and created the
spastic children’s foundation (scf)—a caring
organization that focused on children with special
needs. scf fought for the rights of these “different
children” and provided services for families that were
unable financially to provide for themselves. little did
they know, but this handful of pioneers had just planted
the seeds of a movement that would continue to grow well
into the 21st century. around the same time, another
non-profit called united cerebral palsy was beginning to
organize in new york city.
ucp’s national roots took hold in 1946 when prominent
businessman jack hausman teamed up with leonard
goldenson, then president of abc television. both men
had children with cerebral palsy and recognized the need
for an organization devoted to caring for individuals
with disabilities. goldenson and hausman placed an ad in
the new york herald tribune and hundreds of parents
responded to join the cause. one year later, in 1949,
an organization was formed that would later grow
nationwide to become united cerebral palsy.
in 1946, to support the spastic children’s
foundation, the spastic children’s league (now called
special children’s league) was formed by a happy group
of dedicated volunteers. the founding fathers (or should
we say, mothers) of scf opened their first training
center and set about painting, furnishing and staffing a
program to serve nearly 30 children ages 3-18. they
called it the los angeles training center. what an
exciting time!
a history of housing
during
the fifties, while americans were watching their nifty
new television sets, scf
quietly continued to forge ahead on its mission. a
decade of hard work followed, and soon the fledgling
organization began buying numerous properties. after
all, word was getting around and more clients meant more
space was needed. to serve the growing los angeles
training center, scf purchased two nearby apartment
buildings. it was our first major expansion (and an
early model for independent living). a wonderful
tradition of housing and services for individuals with
developmental disabilities had begun.
meanwhile, a place called
ucp...
while the parents of scf continued to fix up
properties and create unique programs for people with
developmental disabilities, they were delighted to find
they weren’t alone in their noble cause. a second
parent-founded group called the united cerebral palsy
association of los angeles county was making headlines
as a west coast ucp affiliate.
decades later, these two non-profits would combine to
become ucp of los angeles as we know it today. but let’s
get back to 1963 and our very first telethon!
much like our staff, volunteers and board members
today, the ucp of los angeles founders were passionate
about fundraising and generating public awareness.
so, being from hollywood, they took to the airwaves
and brought a tried and true ucp fundraising vehicle to
life in los angeles: the ucp telethon. in previous
years, the national ucp telethon had done much for the
cause and this southern california version was no
different. clearly, it featured some of the brightest
stars of the times.
as a public education device, the telethon was a huge
success. it was, as the banner in the photo suggests, a
true beacon of hope. by shedding light on a subject that
most americans knew little about, it paved the way for
myriad fundraising events in the future.
the telethon enjoyed many successful years and when we
look back on all it accomplished, we’re overcome with
pride.
growing pains
we were all getting them in the early 1970s. as the
child beneficiaries of scf got older (and bigger!), it
became clear that a new facility was needed. in short,
the kids were growing up, so scf grew with them. the
board purchased ranch property in chatsworth and after
some construction, the complex opened in 1973. it
supported 48 scf residents in spacious dormitory
accommodations.
the ucp chatsworth campus of today has replaced the
dormitories with 7 comfortable, newly built homes for 41
residents. in addition, their bustling day program
serves 60 clients daily in the los angeles area.
things are really
coming together now!
roller skating was big. mork and mindy was on tv and
everybody had saturday night fever. it was the
seventies, a time that turned out to be significant in
ucp history. prior to this, scf and ucp had been
operating independently in los angeles.
while scf was known locally for their creative
programs and services, ucp was a highly visible
organization with dynamic fundraising abilities and
national roots. they played to each other’s strengths
and it was obvious that together we could do even
greater things. executives from ucp proposed a merger
and in 1978, ucp/scf was officially formed. it was a
natural combination.
our building boom
united cerebral palsy/spastic children’s foundation
turned out to be a terrific organization. eventually,
someone suggested simply shortening the name to united
cerebral palsy and the moniker stuck. emboldened by our
new name, we set out to conquer the world.
in the coming decades, taking advantage of generous
philanthropic donations and hud?grants, ucp went on a
building spree. for a while it was like a monopoly game,
as we scooped up property after property and built homes
on all of them. the idea was to expand past success and
turn dreams into addresses for as many people as
possible. over the last thirty years we’ve built 27
homes and 10 apartment buildings. we’re proud to say we
currently provide warm, comfortable, accessible and
affordable housing for nearly 350 ucp residents in
southern california.
the
story of ucp/work, inc.
in the last 15 years, ucp/work, inc. has grown from
serving 40 to over 200 individuals and
we’re not done yet. guess you might say we’re a “work
in progress.”
clients are employed in jobs throughout the city of
santa barbara at places such as:
albertsons, the arlington theater, blockbuster,
cottage hospital, ralphs, ucsb, and many others...
meet our family up north.
the story of ucp/work, inc. begins in 1968 up in
santa barbara with a local service group known as the
kiwanis. the 150 members of this organization had done
well for themselves and wanted to give something back to
the community. collectively, they decided to let their
beloved city decide how they should help. the kiwanis
sent out a survey to all of their contacts, asking for
ideas. among many responses, they received a suggestion
from a physician at the rehabilitation institute of
santa barbara, detailing the need for vocational support
services for local residents with significant
disabilities.
as it turned out, there were no agencies providing
these services in santa barbara. so the kiwanis set out
to change that.
they began a 2-year fundraising campaign to launch
work, inc. with the help of local businesses, funding
through the state of california, and a donated building
in downtown santa barbara, the vision was a reality by
1970. beginning with just a handful of program
participants, the organization was soon serving 100
santa barbara residents with disabilities. the rest is
history. ucp history. we merged with work, inc. in 2001
and they’ve been a valuable part of the ucp family ever
since. years later, ucp/work, inc. still upholds the
vision of its founders by providing excellent vocational
training and job placement programs tailored
specifically for individuals with cp and other
developmental disabilities.
the result is independence. employed at real jobs
either in the community or at our office itself, ucp
clients feel self confident and thus enjoy a real sense
of security.
programs & services
our long list of programs and services include
housing, supported & independent living, information &
referral, adult education, day programs and respitality,
just to name a few. from political advocacy to aquatic
therapy, ucp delivers a wealth of resources to help
individuals manage life with a disability. after six
decades in the people-helping business, we’ve learned a
thing or two about meeting the needs of children and
adults with developmental disabilities and their
families.
where we are today
where
would we be without our volunteers? hundreds of
dedicated people further the ucp mission every day.
we put the “fun” in fundraising! annual ucp events
like our golf classic
attract sportsmen and philanthropists alike.
our vip campaign consistently raises hundreds of
thousands of dollars each year.
groups like the special children’s league and psi
delta sigma remain a tremendous source of financial
support for ucp. scl consists of four regional
committees named after their locales: orange county,
foothill, south bay and whittier. pictured above are the
wonderful members
of the foothill scl chapter. back in 1946, our
founders probably never imaginedscl would still be going
strong today.
psi delta sigma was founded in 1921. they are a
social group of women who have been supporting ucp in
california since 1948. they’ve raised over 1.4 million!
ucp’s housing program is among the nation’s finest,
because we provide much more than housing. maximum
independence is our goal. in our 37 community based
homes, ucp residents receive daily expert medical care
as well as exercise, education and social skills
training. a home-cooked meal tops it all off at the end
of the day.
