fat panda = no sex
ah, chuang chuang, what are we going to do with you? it seems he's become too fat to have sex with lin hui, his "wife". video is here!
not that he'd be any good at it, even if he wasn't a fat bear.
it was a year ago when the two first tried the lovemaking, which made thai officials "elated" because they had gone through the trouble of having the two pandas "married" in a special ceremony to bring them luck in the lovemaking department:
but then, we saw this picture, which shows chuang chuang looking not so smart:
if i was a betting man, i'd say that lin hui will go the artificial insemination route. just a guess.

one giant step back for pandas
back in may we wrote about xiang xiang, ..."a 4 year old that "became the first panda born in a laboratory from an
artificially inseminated mother, raised in captivity in china and
released into nature to fend for himself."
at the time, a scientist said, ""has mastered the ability to adapt to living in a wild environment...can live without
being taken care of... has become sensitive and alert to human beings....
he wants to have his own territory, and he has acquired a sense of
self-defense."
unfortunately, that's not very true.
the only captive-bred giant panda to be released into the wild has gone
missing after being badly beaten by a rival for territory, food or a
mate.
in a major setback for china's efforts to replenish the
endangered species with animals reared in zoos, xiang xiang has broken
at least one bone and could be in danger, a leading chinese zoologist
said.
"xiang xiang has been badly hurt in a competition with
other pandas," said zhang hemin, the director of the research and
conservation centre for the giant panda. "we think he fell from a high
place after being chased up a tree by a wild panda."

princess growing up
as much as i wish that pandas could stay baby-sized forever, they do, in fact, grow up and turn into adult pandas.
su lin is heading that way now. at 17 months old, su lin will soon begin the weaning process "in which san diego zoo keepers and researchers will
incrementally separate [bai yun, her mother, and su lin] over the next few weeks until the pair
is fully independent."
happily, i'm sure we will one day see su lin's kids all over pandafix, too!

panda politics (con't)
pandafix discussed the ongoing panda politics between china and taiwan way back when and this is still not settled.
china is still pushing for taiwan to accept tuan tuan and yuan yuan and now some panda experts are concerned that the two won't be able to mate because of the delays... (this link is to video and there is a 30 second commercial proceeding the report.)

a fix of pandas!
seven panda "villages" of
10 to 20 pandas each have been found in northwest china's qinling mountains,
said experts.hmmm?let's read on and discover additional strangeness in this article, shall we? "when female pandas are two years old, they are driven
from home to another village while sons grow up with mother and wait for
"ladies" to arrive from another place, according to yong.
"marrying daughters to a remote area avoids
inbreeding," yong said. young pandas compete -- lazily enough -- to decide which
one will have a "beauty" from another place.
according to yong, the mothers enjoy two types of
cave apartment -- one bedroom with hall or just one big living room."
anyway, what is a group of pandas called? a "sloth" is a group of bears... but pandas aren't social animals and don't group together.
ok then. i've decided to claim naming rights here and have decided to call a group of pandas a fix.
hereafter, let it be known that a fix of pandas refers to 3 or more pandas that are with each other.

panda has twins in japan
at adventure world in wakayama, which is 280 miles southwest of tokyo, meimei the new panda mother gave birth to twins.
researchers aren't sure if the panda babies were the result of artificial insemination or natural panda lovemaking... but i'd bet on the artificial way if anyone wanted to bet.

this is fun... from the description on youtube: in this program, regular members try to keep unique animals in their houses. during the days spent with the animals, the members get to know the behaviour of the animals. the animals have had training, and are from zoos or other facilities. can becky keep a panda well?

we all know that pandas are no good at the lovemaking skills required to naturally make a cute baby panda.
and we also know that researchers have shown to clueless pandas some entertaining (for pandas) videos of other pandas getting it on...
says the panda project chief in thailand: "we'll play the video at the most comfortable and intimate time for him, perhaps after dinner,"
