(ap photo/nasa) astronauts fix ripped solar sail during spacewalk updated sat. nov. 3 2007 6:43 pm et ctv.ca news staff two astronauts from space shuttle discovery have successfully completed complex repairs on a torn international space station solar wing. mission specialists scott parazynski and doug wheelock began the mission's fourth spacewalk on at 6:03 a.m. et on saturday. the more than seven-hour excursion wrapped up at 1:22 p.m. et. parazynski installed five crew-built mini braces made of short stips of aluminum and tape on to the torn wing. he then clipped the wires that had ripped it in two places as it was being unfurled tuesday. the crew inside the space station then slowly deployed the wing half a bay at a time to its full length of 35 metres. andrew yee of zinc projects, a science and education consulting group, told ctv newsnet the use of the canadarm has played an integral role in the mission. "the canadarm has always been central to the entire construction of the space station," yee said. "without the arm, then a lot of astronauts would have to go out to do a lot more spacewalks. and that's the whole point of having a robotic arm - reduce the amount of space walks so the arm can do some of the simpler stuff or maybe service an extension in this case to reach places normally an astronaut cannot get to." flight controllers and astronauts meticulously planned every detail of the repair session that saw parazynski take a 45-minute ride on the station's 27-metre robotic arm and boom extension to the damaged array. parazynski was secured in a foot restraint on the end of the orbiter boom sensor system (obss). the obss functions as an extension to the shuttle's robot arm and is used for inspection of the orbiter's thermal protection system. when he arrived at the wing, parazynski reported that the snag was caused by a guide wire, hinge and grommet. "it ripped clean from the edge of the panel," parazynski said of the torn hinge. "the cells are still intact in the back side. it just came off from the edge." "sounds like you have some surgery to do, dr. parazynski," discovery commander pamela melroy told the physician-turned-astronaut. wheelock positioned himself at the base of the wing to guide parazynski and the astronauts operating the robotic arm. italian astronaut paolo nespoli choreographed the spacewalk from inside the complex. risk of shock the solar panel parazynski fixed buzzes with something between 100 to 160 volts of electricity. to reduce the risk of shock, all of the metal parts on parazynski's spacesuit were triple-wrapped with insulating tape. the solar panel tear had threatened to hamper power production and future construction work on the orbital outpost, including the planned december launch of a european lab. without repairs, the wing's tear could have worsened and caused structural damage to the international space station. if the wing became unstable, nasa would be forced to cut it loose and risk losing a vital power source for future laboratories. space historian randy attwood said the unexpected repair mission has caused a fifth spacewalk to be scrapped. "there was one spacewalk where they wanted to do some tests of a way to fix space shuttle tiles in a vacuum but they won't be able to do that," he said. instead, two astronauts and the russian cosmonaut aboard the space station will attempt the tests during an extra spacewalk on monday when the shuttle discovery departs.
