stephon is awol
and now for the latest knicks controversy.
stephon marbury did not participate in this morning's shoot-around here in phoenix, where the knicks play the suns tonight at u.s. airways arena. isiah thomas acknowledged that marbury was not with the team but said the veteran point guard would be welcomed back if he showed up in time for the game.
right now, it appears mardy collins will start at the point against steve nash and the phoenix suns and nate robinson, who says his hamstring is fine, will come off the bench.
thomas repeatedly called the marbury situation "an in-house matter" but offered enough information to suggest that marbury bristled at the coach's displeasure with his play five games into the regular season.
remember, at the end of the preseason, thomas warned that the marbury "we saw last november, we better not see that player this november." last season marbury was admittedly not in good condition and struggled to conform his outside-in game into thomas' inside-out gameplan. but by midseason, marbury was perhaps the best knick night-in and night-out.
so what changed since then? thomas wouldn't say. "in-house matter," he said.
thomas would say what he expects out of the point guard spot and added that he believes marbury can fill this role.
thomas also called out eddy curry and jamal crawford, two other leaders on the team, for their performance so far in the early season.
stay tuned . . .

i'm back, marbury going?
why can't i take consecutive days off without all hell breaking loose?
i hate referring to a competiting newspaper, but you can't ignore the story frank isola wrote today in the daily news. "stephon marbury's days with the knicks might be numbered" is the headline.
do you really need a second sentance?
these kinds of bombshells always make for a fun start to the four-game road trip, which starts tonight here in phoenix.
anyone who has followed this blog knows my take on the knicks pg situation. i don't know if nate is the answer right now as a starter, but when his hamstring is healthy -- and clearly it is not -- he is a much better option on the defensive end, not to mention a better player to run the team's offense (now that he's embraced the idea of understanding the offense as a whole and not just knowing where he is supposed to go).
it will be next to impossible to move marbury's contract. to buy him out of the $42 mil still left on the contract would blow away any of the previous buyout numbers, including larry brown's walking money. the cablevision investors will be livid, once again.
but as we've been saying here, there is a definitely need for change. but how do they do it?
i'll check in after this morning's shoot-around.

i am not alan hahn...
...and jessica simpson has never made eye contact with me. but i do have some knicks news for you.
zach randolph's grandmother died late friday night and the knicks' power forward returned to indiana. he is questionable for tomorrow's game against the 0-5 heat. more likely he'll rejoin the team in phoenix on tuesday. that certainly doesn't help with shaq coming to town.
isiah thomas didn't say david lee would start, which leads to the supposition that malik rose will start and defend shaq. if randolph is out, you don't want eddy curry guarding shaq and picking up three fouls in the first 44 seconds.
also, dwyane wade might play. he hasn't yet this season. it'll be a game time decision tomorrow.
finally, tickets are still available for the game. if you're in the area, come on by! but if you're a starlet hoping to make eye contact with alan, he won't be there. sorry.

de-emphasizing the d
before i get into my stuff here, read ken berger's column on patrick ewing. money.
ok, to matters of today (and last night).
* *
fixers, i'm putting out a bull**** alert.
twice in one night isiah thomas insulted my intelligence. first, before the he tried to suggest that jerome james would have "looked better" if eddy curry wasn't around -- which suggests jerome decided not to be in shape because he became a backup center -- and then after the game he denied concerns that his team is giving up over 105 points per game after four games.
"we'll get better," he said. "it's the fourth game of the season and we played agaisnt two high-scoring teams that took a lot of shot. we're not playing against teams that hold the basketball. when you look at possessions within the course of a game, denver puts the ball up and orlando puts the ball up. we'll eventually play against some teams that don't shoot as often and as quick as these two teams do and the point total will come down.
"the thing that i'm concerned with the most is whether we win or lose the basketball game. if you win the game, you know, that's all that matters. and we lost the game by not taking care of the basketball."
when did paul westhead take over as head coach?
i'd still like to know why the plan on defense was to double-team dwight howard, who, yes, is improved but really doesn't have a great post-up game. he seems more dangerous to me without the ball than with it. the guy you want to get the ball away from is jameer nelson. but howard you just need to body up almost constantly, just to keep him from getting off the ground so quickly and easily.
eddy curry agrees with me. he says the knicks can't use "traditional defense" against howard, while also pointing out that guards need to stop nelson from penetrating.
“he’s somebody that you really got to devise a defensive scheme against because he’s so athletic," curry said. "you can’t use traditional defense against the guy. any time a guy drives, if you step up and help, if he’s anywhere by the rim, they just throw it at the rim and he’s getting it.”

speaking of things relating to the letter d...
jessica simpson was at friday night's knicks-magic game, sitting a few rows back of celebrity row. and, yes, we made eye contact several times until i finally offered her a wave and she blushed, ducked her head and giggled with her friend. she must have seen me on that web video.
mock me if you will (and i'm sure you will!), but you can't take this moment away from me. it was a moment. a pure, delicate moment, like the time my friend barrelled over tara reid at this club on the sunset strip or when tyra banks asked me for the time after a wnba all-star game (yeah, the "time" i get it...oh, really? um, it's 9:34). between jessica and i, however, there was an undeniable connection.
suddenly the crowd at msg, the players, the other media; it all disappeared as i heard jessica singing oliva newton-john's "i love you" in a dream sequence i am not ashamed to share with you. i am confident enough in my manhood to quote onj in my blog, especially when it's jessica singing it.
if we both were born
in another place and time
this moment might be ending in a kiss . . .
dwight howard then crashed the dream with another thunderous alley-oop over the knicks.
i immediately text-messaged my wife (who, i should insert here, is a beautiful blonde, herself). like some couples, we have a "list." jessica is no. 1 on that "list." so, ms. simpson, with the blessing of my wife (and the fact that the knicks play the clippers), i'll be in la next week . . . have your assistant call me. the paparazzi will never know. i promise.

the magic definitely pose a difficult matchup with all of those shooters around howard and nelson so quick off the dribble and good at drive-and-kicks. but can they live off the three-point bomb the way they are? hedo turkoglu is actually a critical component of their lineup. when he picked up two early fouls in that game, stan van gundy had to put him on the bench and the magic weren't the same. when turkoglu was back in the second half, he was very tough on the knicks, who couldn't defend him and rashard lewis on the perimeter at the same time. here's where jared jeffries is supposed to help once he is back from the knee injury.
lewis is a guy you want to make put the ball on the floor. he'll rarely go all the way to the rim, so you really want to get up tight on him. renaldo balkman tried that, but was called for some tough fouls (one on a three-pointer by lewis that really didn't need to be called).

anyone notice the big game shaq had last night? and there's some thought that d-wade might -- might -- be ready to play by sunday night.
* *
somebody check tv guide and find out when family feud airs. david lee was on it with four other nba players -- grant hill, chris bosh, dwight howard and richard jefferson -- in a charity game against their mothers. it's supposed to air monday. does richard dawson still host this thing? because if he does, i wouldn't let his lips within 10 feet of my mom. dirty old man.
which reminds me of that scene from national lampoon's european vacation, when the griswalds were on "pig in a poke."

move-in weekend for the hahns. anthony rieber will have your coverage of sunday's game against the heat. i'll see you all from phoenix on tuesday.
have a great weekend.

pregame: magic at knicks
always good to see patrick ewing. always.
some news: jerome james is having surgery on his foot on monday. something about removing a cyst that has been giving him trouble. he's out indefinitely.
not too much trouble. big jerome was out shooting threes during the pregame warmup.
sigh.
ok, i can understand a guy having health issues. it sucks. but isiah doesn't have to insult my intelligence by telling me that jerome would have made a bigger impact if the knicks didn't get eddy curry.
“if there was no eddy, if we didn’t have a guy like eddy curry show up, jerome would have had more court time and probably would have looked better than he’s looked," isiah said during the pregame interviews. "but when we got eddy curry that really changed everything. the injuries for him, that’s part o the game. i feel bad that he’s been injured, but that’s how it goes sometimes in this league.”
come on.

bombs away
get your rain gear, fixers, for here comes the perfect storm.
you have the magic, a team that loves putting up three-pointers, and the knicks, a team that believes perimter defense refers to those guys in the suits who sit around jim dolan on the baseline.
in the early going this season, stan van gundy's magic have become a bomb squad. they're taking 25 a game -- a game! -- and hitting just over 10 a game -- a game! -- after five games. they threw up 31 against the raptors in a blowout win wednesday night and also had 30 attempts against the wiz.
isiah thomas, how do you match up?
“they’re a different kind of offensive team because they play one guy inside and four guys on the perimeter," isiah said after practice today. "they can really shoot the ball and spread the floor, so they present a unique kind of challenge to most teams."
yes, to most teams. and even more for the knicks, who have allowed teams to shoot almost 50 percent (27 for 55, which is 49.1 percent) from downtown after three games. and one of those games was against the minnesota timberwolves, who had to use antoine walker off the bench to take a potential game-tying three-point attempt in the final seconds.
rashard lewis and hedo turkoglu are lighting it up out there. lewis is shooting 58.6 percent from downtown and turkoglu is firing at a 44.4 percent clip. both are averaging over 20 points per game, which makes it clear the knicks have far more to worry about than how to stop dwight howard down low.
this ain't steve francis' magic anymore.
* *
had to share these photos, sent to me by charles, who is a fixer lurker. these were taken in a stairwell at msg recently. clearly demetris nichols wanted everyone to remember his time with the knicks.
* *
i'm awaiting word about my candidacy for a web emmy for that outstanding video q and a the dot-com people shot of me at the garden on tuesday night. i just hope malik rose's airball didn't ruin it for me.
let me share with you some comments i've recieved:
* - "the interview wasn't pathetic, but you're not becoming the next ben afleck." -- charles
* - "i didn't want to say it, but yes, you did look like a dweeb." -- craig
* - "you're a web star! nobody loves you like grossie." -- grossie
* - "i'm not worried about my nba tv gig." -- frank
* - "that's 3:51 of my life i'm never getting back." -- luke
ok look. there's a reason why they don't put my face in the newspaper. they think k-berg is "more appealing" and "less offensive." and, if you watch closely, that thing was edited down from a much longer deposition. they made it sound like i was picking the knicks to make the playoffs when -- (nervous laugh) -- clearly i stated on this blog in print that the knicks would win 40 games and finish 9th.
i have to tell you i was caught totally off guard. newsday sends this friendly former intern with a camera and she's asking me how tall i am. so i stand up and say, "six-six." her reply? "i had a boyfriend who was 6-6 and you don't look as tall as he did."
oh. well, uh...
then after the shoot she frowns at the press meal and makes me buy her sushi at the garden. tells me, "just put it on the corporate card you guys get." brags to me about how she taught tom rock how to make the perfect martini or something. what's tom rock doing having martini's with a former intern? what a beat that jets deal is.
where do they get these people?
