windows 7 "top feature request list" leaked to the public
tuesday, 13 november 2007
with windows still managing to find its way to over 95 percent of the desktop computers sold each year, it's not surprising that one can find plenty of people interested in giving their feedback about what future versions of windows should be able to do. a few years ago, before windows vista had even shipped, microsoft sent out a wish list form asking people what features they would like to see in the next version of windows, currently code-named windows 7. the top wished-for features in this list were recently leaked to the public and have popped up at various sites (e.g., neowin). while anonymous sources at microsoft tell us that they bear no relationship to the actual feature set microsoft is currently writing for windows 7, the list does provide interesting insight into what the windows-using public most wants from windows. the features are listed in no particular order, but they break down into various categories depending on what part of windows the feature request falls under. many requests for improvements in internet explorer, such as a session restore function, are fairly obvious wishes for features that already exist in competitive products such as firefox and opera. other suggestions, such as a tabbed windows explorer, look for features from web browsers to migrate into the general user interface. view: arstechnica

mozilla servers swamped by firefox 3.0 beta rumor
saturday, 10 november 2007
mozilla corp. last week briefly shut off the http connection to the servers that host firefox 3.0 after a rumor spread that the open-source browser's first beta was finished. on wednesday, someone identified as "corevette" posted a notice on digg.com claiming firefox 3.0 beta 1 had been released. corevette then linked to the mozilla server which stores the updated-daily, under-construction versions used by developers and testers. the resulting server load was more than mozilla was willing to bear. "it's extremely flattering to get this sort of attention, and we know that it's motivated by the very best of intentions, but it does cause us three major problems," mike beltzner, mozilla's user interface designer, said in a posting on the company's devnews blog. he cited the unfinished beta, lack of qa testing and unmirrored servers as the reasons. to stem the tide, mozilla redirected the digg.com link, which started with the familiar http:// found in most urls. "we've restricted access to the builds by http, meaning that if you click the link in digg, you'll see this page instead," said beltzner. "we've done this to protect our own bandwidth, and also to limit the distribution of what's essentially an unfinished product." source : pcworld.com

directx 10.1 in windows vista sp1 – the evolution - under the hood
wednesday, 31 october 2007
as windows vista brought to the table the exclusive directx 10, the first service pack for the operating system will evolve microsoft's graphics technology to version 10.1. directx 10.1 is already available to over 12,000 testers via the first beta of vista service pack 1, concomitantly with the official release of build 6001.16659. although the testing milestones of vista, windows server 2008 and windows xp sp3 beta, are officially limited in terms of access, a hack is available designed to permit the download of windows vista sp1 beta build 6001.16659 straight from microsoft, and simultaneously test drive directx 10.1. however, vista users have to understand that directx 10.1, as well as directx 10 is a technology intimately connected with the underlying graphics card, such as the upcoming ati radeon hd 3800 series. according to an amd whitepaper focused on the implementation of directx 10.1 in the ati radeon hd 3800 series, the latest application programming interface from microsoft, manages to "unlock the state of the art in gpu technology." source: softpedia

comcast to employees: talking about blocking p2p can get you fired
monday, 29 october 2007
in the wake of the discovery that comcast is blocking some peer-to-peer traffic (and even blocking some lotus notes e-mails), the company is attempting to keep the pr machine well-oiled by giving customer tech support reps some talking points. and if they deviate from the script and admit that comcast has been using sandvine to send forged tcp reset packets, they're likely to lose their jobs. ars has heard from multiple comcast employees since the story broke, and they're all telling us the same thing. they're supposed to tell customers asking whether comcast limits access to bittorrent that the isp doesn't block access to any application, including bittorrent. furthermore, tech support workers are supposed to toe the party line at all times, or they'll be fired. "management informed anyone that discussed this issue with any customer or press associate that it would lead to termination," an internal tier 2 tech support worker told ars on the condition of anonymity. one of the e-mails we saw came from the manager/ip support of one of comcast's regional call centers. "if a customer contacts us to inquire about this, please use the following talking points," reads the e-mail. "comcast does not block access to any applications, including bittorrent," the e-mail continues. "we respect our customers' privacy and we don't monitor specific customer activities on the internet or track individual online behavior, such as which web sites they visit. therefore, we do not know whether any individual user is visiting bittorrent or any other site." the e-mail continues along that vein, covering the same ground that comcast spokespeople have used in their dealings with the media. "we have a responsibility to provide all of our customers with a good experience online and we use the latest technologies to manage our network," reads the e-mail. "this is standard practice for isps and network operators all over the world." view: arstechnica

the great double standard
sunday, 28 october 2007
two closely timed events—today's release of mac os x leopard and yesterday's big microsoft earnings report—raise questions yet again about how microsoft and apple are perceived. apple it seems can do no wrong, while microsoft can do no right. if someone passes gas in the room, someone blames microsoft. yet apple can "brick" iphones for which customers paid $400 to $600 and sales just soar. microsoft reports solid earnings quarter after quarter—and yesterday beat earnings estimates by more than $1 billion. yet microsoft's stock price is stuck at 2001 levels. apple earnings results are good, but nowhere near what microsoft delivers. yet apple's stock just climbs and climbs—this morning to more than $185 a share, up from about 77 bucks 52 weeks earlier. a decade ago, things were different. following the release of windows 95, microsoft could do no wrong. the company got huge preferential press treatment. i recall the week that corel released the first new version of wordperfect suite since the acquisition from novell. microsoft talked up the unreleased office 97, which got the majority of the press coverage. source : microsoft watch

can symantec blame microsoft?
saturday, 27 october 2007
if symantec is to be believed, consumers and small businesses are slowing security software purchases. is microsoft a factor and is there opportunity for the company to snatch new customers? the answers aren't easily discerned because of intangibles that analysts can't measure with confidence. consumers and small businesses aren't necessarily aware what security software they have or how up to date it is. for example, when working as an analyst, i observed a startling trend regarding consumers and firewall software. more than one third of windows xp users said they had none; it's built into the operating system. additionally, in the united states, major retail analyst firm npd measures channel sales but doesn't have data on direct, digital renewals, which account for 40 percent to 50 percent of total security software sales. what can be assessed, at least in the u.s. retail market, which also contradicts symantec's position: security software sales are way up, in the double digits.symantec is the biggest benefactor of sales increases.microsoft's windows live onecare market share is insignificant compared to symantec's. these indicators suggest that consumers and small businesses are not curbing security software spending and that microsoft isn't much of a factor. that said, the obvious conclusion isn't always the right one. "u.s. retail dollar volume for security software—security suites, antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall, etc.—is up 17 percent year over year," said chris swenson, npd's director of software industry analysis. "we're having a great year for security software so far." view: microsoft watch

facebook got its $15 billion valuation — now what?
saturday, 27 october 2007
when a startup shows an estimated $150 million in revenue, isn't wildly profitable, and doesn't have a clear revenue model, no company in its right mind would give it a $15 billion valuation -- except, it seems, if we're talking about facebook. could facebook defy business norms? could it really be worth enough to give its founder, 24-year-old mark zuckerberg, a fortune estimated at between $3 billion and $5 billion? it all depends on the company's success at building an advertising network, details of which the company is expected to announce on november 6. with all the dreamy-eyed developers and enraptured tech evangelists filling silicon valley with their facebook love, it's important to remember that the $15 billion figure is fairly abstract. microsoft was willing to pay $240 million for a 1.6 percent slice of facebook, but it's debatable whether subsequent investors will see things the same way. in this case, microsoft had compelling reasons to yield to facebook's terms. for one thing, $240 million is chump change to microsoft, which has $6.6 billion cash in the bank. greg sterling, both an independent consultant and a senior analyst for advisory service local mobile search, frames it this way: microsoft wanted to block google from horning in on its advertising relationship with facebook. it also couldn't afford to lose perceived momentum with its largest advertising partner. view: wired news

ford and microsoft team up on pink zune
sunday, 21 october 2007
microsoft has produced a limited edition pink zune for breast cancer awareness month, and got ford to get on board to donate 100% of the proceeds.it's october, which inevitably means that we'll be seeing a healthy dose of gadgets in pink as manufacturers look to support breast cancer awareness month. this particular device, however, means a touch more to the cause than most, as both ford and microsoft are teaming up to donate "100-percent of the purchase price" to susan g. news source: hardocp

microsoft live labs rolls out list-sharing tool
saturday, 20 october 2007
microsoft’s live labs — the team that brought us photosynth (photo manipulation/melding) and seadragon (smooth-browsing) technology previews — has introduced another offering to its roster: listas. listas is a list-sharing tool. according to a description of the technology on the live labs web site, listas “allows you to quickly and easily edit lists, share them with others for reading or wiki-style editing, and discover the public lists of other users. we encourage you to try using it for meeting notes, bookmarks, shopping lists, to plan a night out, or whatever other creative ways you can think of.” live labs is the combined microsoft research-msn incubation unit headed by gary flake. microsoft launched live labs in january 2006 with the charter of helping the company bring experimental internet technologies more quickly to market. (do incubations count as being available to market?) live labs isn’t the only entity inside microsoft experimenting with shared bookmarking/lists. microsoft also has been testing a social-bookmarking tool, known as tagspace. and there’s also a microsoft research project — tagbooster — which is focused on ranking and suggesting tags. (thanks to activewin.com for the tagbooster link.) view: zdnet

get a sneak peek of microsoft’s office live workspace service
saturday, 20 october 2007
when microsoft announced on september 30 its strategy for taking on google docs — via a forthcoming service known as office live workspace — the company declined to show off a preview of the new service. (as a result of redmond’s reticence to play show and tell with the new service, some company watchers deemed the service nothing but vaporware, and wondered whether microsoft’s announcement of office live workspace was simply meant to freeze the market.) on october 17, microsoft conceded and shared a few screen shots of office live workspace, which is expected to go to a private group of testers next month. office live workspace is, in microsoft’s words, “a new web-based feature of microsoft office which lets people access their documents online and share their work with others.” it’s aimed at consumers and small-business users. view: zdnet

comcast busted for bagging bittorrents (again)
saturday, 20 october 2007
new tests have confirmed that comcast is throttling file-sharing traffic. citing tests run on machines across the us, the associated press reported today that the big-name internet service provider "actively interferes" with attempts to swap files over p2p networks like bittorrent, edonkey, and gnutella. the reg first discussed this phenomenon in late august, after a post on the dutch file-sharing blog torrentfreak. but claims of comcast p2p throttling go all the way back to the late spring, when a independent tester named robb topolski told readers on dslreports that the isp was using a networking management tool called sandvine to prevent bittorrent users from "seeding" files - i.e. making them available to other users. view: the register

microsoft's big mac sales
friday, 12 october 2007
here's a big number: 20 percent of microsoft office's u.s retail sales are the mac version, according to npd. here's another: mac users account for 10 percent of retail windows vista business and ultimate sales. those startling statistics are yet another sign of the mac's resurgence and of the huge opportunity it creates for the largest macintosh developer outside of apple. microsoft produced mac versions of excel and word long before the products went to windows. apple's resurgence is an opportunity for microsoft to recall those early glory days. but should microsoft want to? after all, macs compete with windows pcs. does microsoft really want to be in the business of supporting a competitor? "twenty percent of all the versions of microsoft office sold at retail are the mac version," said chris swenson, npd's director of software industry analysis. "office 2004 for the mac is selling like hot cakes." swenson quoted numbers for u.s. online and in-store retail. the 20 percent number is impressive for a three-and-a-half year-old product whose successor is scheduled for a january release. the sales also greatly exceed various analyst estimates of apple's u.s. market-share—5 percent. the real number of users could be considerably higher. source: microsoft-watch

windows skydrive goes to 1gb
friday, 12 october 2007
these past couple of months since our last release, we asked ourselves, “what can we do to make skydrive even better?” the most obvious answer is something that our users have asked us to do: give out more storage. we’re excited to announce that we’re doubling everyone’s storage to 1 gb! many users told us, “hey, we want to be notified when someone adds a file to a specific folder,” so we added rss feeds to public folders. to subscribe to an rss feed, go to the public folder that you’re interested in, and click on the orange rss feed icon at the top right of the page. then, anytime that folder is updated, you’ll be notified. we love this feature because we get notified as soon as our friends upload new files to their folders. another thing users told us is that it’s difficult to share a folder with people that aren’t in your address book. people said, “we have to go to hotmail or messenger in order to add someone to our address books. why can’t we just do it on skydrive itself?” we fixed that. now, you can share with anyone directly from skydrive by typing in your friend’s e-mail address. source: skydrive team blog
