game! seriously one of the best games yet this year. i don’t care that we won and that we could’ve scored more. lyon could’ve scored some goals as well. defensively both teams were lacking some grip except squillacci at lyon and rodriguez for us. the game was technically way higher than what could be expected. samir nasri is still not 100% but he’ just showed how much better than his opponents he can be. i know ‘everyone is waiting for nasri and benzema to play together in the french national team but i really want to see nasri and benarfa play together. they could be paired like zidane and ribery somewhere. benarfa was a lot less tired than benzema and it showed. what a game from him and sidney govou who is going to be elected player of the year if he continues this way. read the rest marseille in what will be, no matter how low our ranking is right now, the most talked about and watched match of the weekend if not of the season. the two olympiques are france’s representatives in this year’s uefa champions league have had, as you know very dissimilar seasons so far and everybody is just expecting marseille to be mauled at the gerland. i’m pretty sure -or at least i’m praying really hard- that our players will be playing as hard as they were this tuesday not to get humiliated over there. olympique lyonnais - olympique de marseille sunday november 11th @ stade gerland in numeric replacement of mickaël pagis may be going on loan to qatar as soon as this december since he hasn’t played once under eric gerets who has not seemed very impressed with his playing skills. he’s been seen playing with his ipod this wednesday at porto on french tv and didn’t look that phazed by his non participation to the game. moussilou is another example of “you should never be recruiting in a hurry”. he was our first mistake and should have never come to marseille in the first place. at age 25, his career could be prematurily over for someone who showed a lot of possibilities a long time ago. josé anigo showed us here how the people who went and found franck ribery and daniel van buyten are the ones that recruited christian gimenez and adriano (not the imperator, another “brazilian phenomenon” you non marseille fans have never heard of, and should be thankful you didn’t). before this deal comes to fruitionthough , nice, who still owns moussilou must be in on the deal. like a friend of mine said last week, “when it was time to recruit strikers at nice, bordeaux chose bellion and marseille picked moussilou”. that kinda sums up the season we are having. category: rumors tags: matt moussilou, , rumors, tag index november 8th, 2007 samir nasri back on french national team… by: magnusson | 7 comments raymond domenech gave his list of players that will play against morocco and ukraine a little later this month. the good news for marseille is that samir nasri is back in. neither gaël givet nor djibril cissé are in but that was predictable given our lackluster season. julien rodriguez will have to be as good as last year to be a candidate again. some choices are more questionnable. david trézeguet is still not included. pascal chimbonda will never wear the national uniform ever again under domenech. françois clerc (who, if i’m not mistaken is not a starter at lyon anymore) comes back to the group and so is marseille product mathieu flamini who is “raymond la science”’s latest man-crush. alou diarra has been called back and given his good start with bordeaux, it makes a lot of sense. he’ll have the heavy task of replacing patrick vieira, still injured. i’m a little disappointed not to see abou diaby while lassana diarra who doesn’t play is called up. ray ray once again does what he wants. oh and no phillippe méxès, this dude is the best defender in italy. read the rest of this entry » category: french natinal team tags: french natinal team, samir nasri, domenech, sébastien frey, mickaël landreau, ulrich rame, eric abidal, it’s now practically confirmed, andré ayew pelé will be starting tonight’s match in lieu of djibril cissé. and that may be a good choice given the kid’s enthusiasm and performance last saturday (it was against lorient which is hardly porto but still…). the marseillais players will try to make us forget for a night their trials in the ligue 1 and make their supporters happy once more with a qualification to the next round of this competition. after all, there is no need for us to really worry when it comes to this competition. we’ve had two wins and a draw, and now the outsider is at the top of the group. this is far from being a crucial game. if we win, we automatically go through and if we lose, we won’t be out of the compettion just yet. with the fun fact of the day being that no french team has ever won in porto. hey! that’ what they said at anfield. we could be surprising a lot of people but the realistic result would be a draw or a porto win. at about an hour from the kickoff , here is the expected team: read the rest of this entry » category: uefa champions league tags: uefa champions league, french ligue 1, essays, mandanda, hamel, bonnart, taiwo, givet, zubar, portuguese, not your own fans… by: magnusson | 2 comments to get back to the champions league and to the porto game, marseille is everything but poised at the moment. of course the staff will have you believe otherwise, with eric gerets saying how the champions league is a reason for joy and nothing zelse and how he wants his players to have some fun on the pitch and how he trusts and loves them. but behind all the declarations, the particular way they have been talking to andré ayew (abedi pelé’s son who was the only player with some spirit against lorient) the past two days would predict that the youngster will start alongside mamadou niang on tuesday night. gerets has been seen talking extensively to the kid all day so this may be the surprise to try to hurt djibril cissé’s pride and force him to work some more. just to show you how peaceful he’s been lately, here’s a video of djibril picking a fight with one of the marseillais fans that wa in porto to welcome the team. they start exchanging amabilities that i don’t need to translate. this was this afternoon in porto. read the rest of this entry » category: uefa champions league tags: french ligue 1, essays, uefa champions could have just as easily lost this match if it wasn’t for steve mandanda. after this aturday’s disaster, marseille was 18th before lens - saint etienne. after that amazing game (seriously, dindane scored with an injury), marseille was at the 19th place and on our way to play against porto, a team that hasn’t lost on their turf in two years. read the rest of this entry » category: uefa champions lorient is the last one before next week’s fateful trip to lisbon. marseille needs a good dynamic before stepping into the dragon stadium on tuesday night. if we get a good enough result in portugal, we’ll be sure to make it to the second round of the champions league. but before that, we’ll have to face a team that has managed to humiliate both lyon and paris. christian gourcuff’s boys will be highly motivated to get their first victory in eight games against a marseille team that has played far from stellar football this season. november 3rd 2007 @ stade vélodrome in marseille marseille - magnusson | add comments eric gerets said all week that there was going to be some kind of big shakedown with new players getting their shot (people were talking oruma-mbami in the midfield, arrache gragnic ziani nasri and moussilou up top. none of that happened. eric gerets created the “never change a losing team” principle. after the fiasco that happened on saturday, it was good to see him put the same team in just to let them redeem themselves. it pretty much worked. samir nasri is quietly getting back to his best level and that is something very nice to see. he’s back to acting like the understudy of franck ribery and was everywhere dishing out passes and just all around making for my lack fantasy-football points lately. karim ziani finally showed the public why he was so expensive in the first place. and mamadou niang is quietly getting back to being one of the most underrated strikers in the ligue 1. in what was a somewhat boring game, marseille didn’t manage to score against metz in the initial 90 minutes. we had to go to extra-time for us to take the lead twice by mamadou niang first and then by djibril cissé. this particular game had a scenario that i didn’t like one bit as it reminded me of the final of the coupe de france last year when after leading twice with goals of niang and cissé, sochaux caught up twice and ended up lifting the trophy. this time it didn’t happen. marseille squandered too many chances for me to count (just watch the video) and didn’t manage to score. and in their two excursions out of their zone, metz managed to score on two mistakes from us. that was worrysome. but djibril cissé patching things up with the vélodrome was a sight to see. he finished the game in his underwear as if we had just won something importantand the public (the very few that actually were at the stadium) were chanting his name throughout the second half even before he scored. and he was voted player of the match by the fans. apparently, it only takes didier drogba to speak for the supporters to follow suit. in any case, cissé was smiling even when he was missing shots. maybe gerets got the spirit back in the team. read the rest of this entry » know they managed to take bordeaux out of the competition in the previous round. even if they’re dead last in the ligue, they could surprise us like they surprised the girondins. a big shakedown was supposed to happen and cissé was not even supposed to be included in the group. but after his catastrophic game on saturday, eric gerets didn’t want this to seem like a punishment so he’s been reincluded in a group that now counts 20 players. he announced that ayew and moussilou was about to start the game. and this turns out to be a big coup since now, one hour before the game, he decided to make minimal changes and the two players that seemed the more tired were replaced. valbuena who has played every single game can now take some well deserved rest. zenden as well (he walked the whole sochaux game, it was incredible). here’s the lineup mandanda taiwo bonnard faty givet cheyrou cana nasri ziani niang cissé give us goals then category: coupe de la ligue tags: olympique de
