» plenty of gray area with kevin nash a stream-of-consciousness look at last night’s tna impact: you have to give it to kevin nash – he definitely doesn’t look his age. he’s 48, but with his gray hair and beard, he doesn’t look a day over 60. in his new story line, he’s trying to channel diesel, but he reminds me more of oz. … kurt angle has become the biggest babyface on the show as far as i’m concerned by delivering this line to nash: “your jokes aren’t funny and you’re a disgrace to the business.” oh, it’s true. … looking for a peace offering to give to nash, angle asked jeremy borash, “what does kevin like?” borash: “he likes porn.” that vince russo is so witty. suddenly the hornswoggle bits in wwe don’t seem so bad. … disco inferno is back? i thought he was in jail. mike tenay asked him why he chose tna for his comeback. i’m not sure what disco’s reply was, but the answer should have been: “because wwe won’t return my calls and vince russo knows talent when he sees it.” … with disco on the scene, tna is looking more and more like wcw circa 2000 every day. i can’t wait until big vito, kwee-wee, lash leroux and shawn stasiak show up. … awesome kong definitely brings something different to the women’s division, and that’s a good thing. with her size and mauling style, she reminds me of bull nakano. thanks to kong and gail kim, tna has the edge over wwe when it comes to women’s wrestling. unfortunately for tna, women’s wrestling doesn’t move ratings or increase buy rates. … someone in tna figured out the best way to promote the new christian cage dvd was to emphasize that it contains footage of adam “edge” copeland from early in his career. it might increase sales, but by pushing the fact that a wwe star is on the dvd, tna comes off looking minor league. … there’s dissension between tag-team partners chris harris and rhino. that was quick. russo has never understood that tag teams, factions and couples first need to get along for a while for it to mean anything when they eventually split. … i see that tna has made progress in trying to cultivate more of a cutting-edge image. yep, tenay finally ditched the bow tie. … angle cut a promo in a wheelchair. i feel like i’m watching an old clip from wwe 24/7, because i’m certain angle did the wheelchair bit several years ago. … lance hoyt and christy hemme aren’t getting along. neither are kurt and karen angle, and robert roode and miss brooks. please refer back to harris-rhino item. … junior fatu tried to cut a rock-style promo. as far as rock imitators go, let’s just say he’s no john cena. … that outfit that dustin rhodes wears as black reign has to be a rib. there are halloween costumes at kmart that look less cheesy. … black reign licked a rat. i’m sure there’s a joke there somewhere. … abyss, a 300-pound monster who has wrestled in matches involving barbed wire, broken glass and thumb tacks, is deathly afraid of the rat. i’m no big fan of rats myself (although i am a big fan of ratt), but i would expect more from a high-level babyface. … cage and samoa joe had an excellent match, which cage ended up winning thanks to interference from roode. hopefully this is the start of a bigger push for roode. this match was so good, it almost made up for the previous hour and 40 minutes. almost. posted by kevin eck on october 19, 2007 4:23 am | permalink trackback trackback url for this entry:http://blogs.trb.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-t.cgi/32822 comments i came to the conclusion a long time ago that when watching tna, the viewer is not supposed to think about all of the goofy angles and skits. you’re supposed to sit there like a zombie and repeat the mantra “this is tna” if something makes no sense. that’s why i don’t watch tna anymore. wwe has some silly storylines from time to time, but nothing in comparison to the thursday night kurt angle show. posted by: sean | october 19, 2007 11:26 am the 5-way women's match on the 9/27 tna impact saw an increase of 211,000 viewers over the previous segment on the show. it was also the highest rated segment of the show as a whole. the sting/mesias brawl lost 79,000 viewers while sabin/shelley vs. hoyt/rave lost 53,000 viewers. this information was found in the wrestling observer newsletter. now who are you trying to fool when you say women's wrestling doesn't move ratings or increase buyrates? get your facts straight. response from kevin eck: i saw the same numbers in the observer and they are correct. however, you are citing one specific eipsode and i was speaking in broad terms. there are always occasional exceptions, but, in general, women's wrestling doesn't move ratings or increase buy rates. if it did, tna would have had a women's division long before now and the women would be main-eventing pay-per-views. take a look back at the 9/17 raw ratings. a tag match between candice michelle-mickie james and melina-jillian hall lost 576,000 viewers and was the lowest-rated segment on the show. also, in the tna episode that you noted, the overall rating was a 0.9, a 15 percent drop from the regular level -- so the women's match was the highest-rated segment on a show that did worse than usual. posted by: billy | october 19, 2007 2:06 pm good stuff, kevin. like most internet wrestling writers, a bad product brings out the best in you...this was a good reminder of why i watched the office and game 5 of the alcs instead of russomania. i burned out on wwe long ago, but tna is doing more and more to remind me that it could be worse. besides, as soon as jericho comes back, i'll be tuning in to raw again. posted by: kevin in columbia | october 19, 2007 7:42 pm the part you forgot was possibly my favorite part (though tenay phoning in the interview with disco inferno and asking, seriously, "why tna?", might give it a run for my money). my favorite part was team 3-d coming down and putting the motor city machine guns through tables. it is my favorite part because, within 20 seconds of it happening, i went from being deliriously happy (good, the guns are going to take on 3-d, finally, the guns will get the rub!) to completely confused as brother ray cut his promo. apparently, because devon and ray are the best tag team that ever lived, they have decided to take out everyone in the x-division. huh? how long has it been since either sabin or shelley have been involved in the x-division? for that matter, how long has it been since the x-division has been invovled in the x-division? posted by: christopher grant | october 19, 2007 9:19 pm post a comment (if you haven't left a comment here before, you may need to be approved by the site owner before your comment will appear. until then, it won't appear on the entry. thanks for waiting.) name: email address: url: remember personal info?
