"i am deeply moved by the offer from our state of israel, and at once saddened and ashamed that i cannot accept it."   i recommend einstein's books 'the world as i see it' and 'ideas and opinions'. the spirit,thoughts and words of a planetary citizen for all times.    today we have jews in this spirit of righteousness burning the flame.rabbi michael lerner publishes tikkun magazine.tikkun means to heal,repair, and transform the world.tanya reinhardt a professor of tel aviv university,israel is a serious critic of israeli militarism. professor reinhardt as einstein before her, joined with arabs and christians to advocate ideas of justice,democracy and humanity. the recent/current crisis in the levant is in their cross-hairs of analysis and critique.                                                                                    tigerhawk's editorial  conclusion.    the righteous ones (jews,muslims,christians) provide strength and guidance to the bold ones. israel has had it's share of bold ones who were often generals and colonels.moshe dayan,yitzhak rabin,ehud barak and recently ariel sharon. the warriors are often the key to peace having known the horror of war.however a crisis is here and the current leadership of kadima's prime minister ehud olmert and labor's defence minister peretz are not military officers.the government is an awkward coalition only in power a few months.wannabe hawks(peretz) and newly professed doves(olmert). unfortunately for world jewry, opposition leader 'bebe' netanyahu lacks that wise and generous spirit of a righteous jew.bebe and likud party which sharon abandoned just before a stroke, are prone to military supremacy and self-righteous power plays.disastrous for all.netanyahu's elder brother was an  idf officer who led a commando team and died at entebbe,uganda.idi amin was the villain uganda president  who had 'hosted' israelis airline passengers after a hijacking. olmert and peretz over-compensate in military matters and are unduly influenced by the uniform brass. sharon had the confidence and authority to critique the general staff plans,strategy and tactics.as prime minister he saw both the civil and the military angles. there is however a more dangerous issue which i suspect is the source of angst from tel aviv to new york city and los angeles. the idf's aura of invincibility was shattered in the 34 days of combat with the party of god in lebanon.israel had no lightning victory as the 6 day war in 1967, or brilliant outflanking similar to the seizing of the suez peninsula in 1973.the collective punishment of lebanese by aerial bombardment of civilians and civil infrastructure, has led to war crimes charges. the problem is more psychological than firepower.hizbollah's asymmetrical warfare and surprisingly sophisticated weaponry has jolted the confidence of the israeli elites.the intimidation by military option is no longer a guarantor of israeli regional dominance. john lennon's idea of 'give peace a chance' may be the road forward.here the righteous ones are key to strengthen the bold ones. the parallels to  apartheid south africa are uncanny.israel's ally at the southern tip of the african continent often bullied and terrorized black african neighbors.white power roared from the barrel of a tank or jetfighter.it all suddenly ended. two words.cuito canavale.in 1988,the south african defense forces were defeated in angola at cuito canavale by the cuban international forces.white invincibility was shattered.namibia's disrespectful abuse was checked.the blacks in the frontline states were emboldened.the pretoria regime changed leadership and presented a bold one in 1989.frederik w.de klerk opened political space for the anc and other organizations to function legally.secretly  de klerk had been in negotiations with the righteous one-nelson mandela.the south african elite turned from the arrogance and supremacy of the military warlords and allowed de klerk the space to negotiate a blood-less transition.the pressure was overwhelming as south african diamond and gold miners were striking,uc berkeley and other us universities had 'divested' investments, and south african students demonstrating in the streets. mandela released in 1990, became president in 1994 of a democratic 'one man,one vote' republic of south africa.south africa disarmed its nuclear arsenal which had been created during the apartheid years with israel's co-operation.mandela could have been the world's first black nuclear-armed president.the righteous one said no to war and destruction.an inspiring example to the world.mandela called for global nuclear disarmament.a truly civilized idea.another civilizing gift from africa to humanity.interestingly, mandela's closest confidante and military chief was joe slovo, a lithuanian jew.    timbuktu:mali's sirius gift to humanity. in closing i must report on salif keita's performance at the santa monica pier on thursday august 10,2006.i confess that after sara tavares and dakah, i was not expecting to be further elevated musically.what was i thinking? salif is 'the golden voice of mali'.i can honestly say i'm still vibin' off the mali energy 2 weeks after. i put my salif keita albums back in my itunes playlist rotation with a renewed gratitude.one is transported to west africa where the sahara desert lies just north and islam is 'converted' by african rhythm and energy.what an evening kissed by the pacific ocean's breezes and mali's spiritual cleansing. salif keita is the living embodiment of west african art,music,and civilization dating back to at least the 13th century and further. sundiata keita(1230-1255) was the founder of the mali empire.the earlier ghana empire went back to 750 ad. sundiata's rise was prophesised and the intrigues which unfolded are worthy of a hollywood directorial giant like bertolucci,sir attenborough or spike lee.the mali kingdom embraced thousands of square miles beyond the present mali.the trade was salt and gold across the sahara desert.mansa musa(1312-1337), sundiata's great grand-nephew extended the wealth of gold and civilization.timbuktu unlike shangri-la really existed as a centre of islamic scholarly higher learning, influencing the civilization of the mediterranean.black professors maintained and expounded the most advanced knowledge, exchanging with the university of salamanca in moorish spain.precious manuscripts were stored in timbuktu.the libraries and mosques were international destinations.the larger area songhay empire followed the mali kingdom,expanding the role of timbuktu as a religious,scholarly and cultural centre.manhattan of its time. when mansa musa travelled on his hajj to the holy cities of mecca and medina, he stopped to greet the caliph of cairo.the malian emperor was so wealthy with gold and so generous, that a bout of gold inflation is recorded through-out the whole muslim world.the civilized african emperor with timbuktu as a commercial and cultural centre, understood the principle of sharing with the less fortunate.a rare virtue today,although bill gates has shown an african focus as he expands his philantrophy.the portuguese navigation,african  coastal exploration, and growing trade devalued the role of the trans-sahara gold-salt trade.in passing tigerhawk must mention the fascinating tale mansa musa reportedly told the syrian historian al-umari. apparently mansa abubakar ii,mansa musa's predecessor left to cross the atlantic occean with 2,000 ships of gold,water and men,never to return. the ruler was obsessed because an earlier expedition of 200 ships was reduced to one ship returning to mali.the captain of the surviving ship relayed about a river which opened in the ocean and took the other 199 ships.is this a link to the new world's discovery 150 years + before senor colon of genoa travelled for the spanish crown in 1492? your call. mansa musa assumed the throne in mansa abubakar ii's absence.  salif keita is of this rich cultural and proud civilizing lineage.the djeli or (in french) griots are the story-tellers of mali.the dogon in the mountains escaped islam and knew of the planet sirius before europeans had telescopes. these influences were subtle yet in the atmosphere as salif wailed and sang in his native tongue and french.the band was in such command that salif often disappeared to allow the crew to shine.african generosity.the ladies stole the show.what harmonies, melodies and dancing.such regalness and feminine grace.salif demonstrated a snap-shot of the sophistication of west african social/cultural tapestry.excellence all around on all instruments,including indigenous african instruments.love ballads, dance cuts and african/universal empowerment are all themes musically expressed.although promoting a new project m'bemba, salif performed many of his global hits.my favorite moments were 'sina','tekere','moussouldu' and 'yamore'.i was just a bit disappointed he didn't play 'africa'.overall a sober and deeply moving experience. the audience reminded me of the house music crowd.every nationality who love to get their groove on.unfortunately as with bob marley when he toured us , few african-americans in attendance.we understand that identity schism fed by hollywood and commercial radio.lots of israelis,jews,brazilians,africans,europeans,asians.many beautiful women dancing.positive vibration and universal appeal. national public radio (npr) just featured afro-pop artists august 15-17,2006. hear salif's interview and music.note keita's albino skin tone was a factor in his life's struggle.now he gives back to albinos in africa through foundations.royal generosity. senegalese scholar cheikh anta diop became controversial in european academic circles for reclaiming africa's role as a civilizing influence.the masterpiece ' civilization or barbarism' threw down the gauntlet to counter ignorance of africa's civilizations. we need only observe mandela's global stance and mali's history prior to invasion.the middle east can due to politics etc. +/- 4000 south african soldiers both black and white (brothers to the end) took on the cubans (13th brigade and many others) +/-30 000 soldiers and decisively defeated them at
