salt lake city -- real salt lake twice fought back from one-goal disadvantages before getting a late equalizer despite playing a man down to grab a 2-2 draw with the colorado rapids in the first match for the rocky mountain cup this season. in a steady downpour saturday afternoon at rice-eccles stadium, jovan kirovski gave the rapids a first-half lead before a wild finish that saw three goals and a red card in the final 17 minutes. a jeff cunningham penalty kick gave real their first tying goal, before rsl striker atiba harris was sent off. rookie substitute daniel wasson then gave colorado another lead, before the all-time leading goal scorer in mls history, jason kreis, once again pulled rsl level. it was a heated and historic rivalry a year ago, with real getting their first-ever win against colorado, before the rapids took the final three games of the year to claim the rocky mountain cup for the first time. the rapids continued their recent dominance over their rocky mountain rivals when they were the first to approach goal on saturday. ten minutes into the match clint mathis -- traded from rsl to colorado for cunningham over the offseason -- was able to get his head onto a long cross from the sideline. mathis was able to redirect the ball toward goal, but his shot was high. salt lake was able to get their first dangerous look in the 23rd minute. chris klein slipped a pass through the colorado defense that found mehdi ballouchy, but the rsl rookie had the ball poked away before he could gain complete control just outside the six-yard box. just after the half-hour, both teams had good chances. first, kreis narrowly missed the frame in the 31st minute. klein floated a high cross that found kreis at the back post, and though the rsl striker rose above his marker, he directed his forceful header just over the crossbar. real goalkeeper scott garlick passed his first real test just seconds later when mathis spun off his defender and unleashed a 30-yard rocket that garlick tipped away for a corner. the rapids broke the deadlock on the ensuing play after a mad scramble that resulted in a pair of saves before the ball found its way into the net. mathis slid a short corner to eric denton at the top of the area, but his shot was swatted away by garlick. the following rebound was also blocked by the salt lake 'keeper, but the defelction fell to kirovski. he still hit his first chance off the post, but the rebound fell kindly back to him and he tapped his team-leading fifth goal of season into the open net. rsl super-sub cunningham -- who had three goals in the last two games, all as a substitute -- started the second half in place of kenny cutler, and rsl's atiba harris soon showed his side's attacking thrust with a 25-yard blast that skipped just past the wrong side of the post in the 48th minute. real kept the pressure on throughout the second half, keeping much of the possssion, but just weren't able to find that final pass leading to a decent shot. luck fell real's way in the 74th minute as they were awarded a penalty for a handball on mike petke -- although replays appeared to show petke was a good couple of yards outside the area when he made contact. cunningham stepped up to the spot and slapped in his fifth goal of the campaign. but the home side went a man down in the 82nd minute when harris committed a clumsy foul for his second yellow card on the day. the rapids earned a corner in the 85th minute, and nearly took the lead. rsl defender kevin novak cleared the ball off the line twice, then garlick tipped a third shot away. that earned colorado another corner, and this time they converted. terry cooke's service from the right side found wasson completely unmarked at the top of the goal area, and he made no mistake in heading the rapids into the lead with just minutes left. but the colorado lead didn't last long as rsl leveled in the 88th minute. cunningham hooked the ball toward goal, and klein flicked a bouncing ball behind him into the box. kreis rushed on and bravely poked in the equalizer just before he collided heavily with colorado 'keeper bouna coundoul. the game's final chance fell to kirovski in the last minute of stoppage time, but although he had a good look at goal, he put his shot wide. although real weren't able to win a club-record third game in a row, the late goal was enough to
