this approach was popularized by a theologian named bultmann who did not see a need to take things like miracles or resurrection literally. - finally, a post-modern approach (in the literary sense)  involves reading the text as a way. to understand myself and examines the very process of reading posted by kevin rains on 10/31/06; 6:02:09 am lectio: job and i struck this morning by the lectionary reading from job. job was the first book of the bible that i read all the way through and took notes on. in that sense it was the first book i studied or reflected on. i even remember the notebook i used to record my notes. i fell for scripture because of this book, job. the lectionary passages really has to do with god restore restoring the relationships and fortunes of job later in life. this scares me in one sense. i'm not sure if it is a well founded fear or not but i had the thought that god often brings men through a middle passage of life where he strips them of comfort and security. it's often called a mid-life crisis. it's that time of life where many men lose their hair more rapidly, buy fast cars, have affairs, and generally try to recapture their sense of power. it is a sad passage in many ways but a necessary one. of course these are generalizations but there are reasons that we can generalize about such things namely they are generally true. not that all men have affairs. i certainly intend not to. i also don't care much for fast cars. been there done that. cars are jsut things i fix for money so the mystery is generally gone. now motorcycles, that's another story. so this passage scares me. i wonder if i'm embarking on that phase of life now. i had the sense of looking though a tunnel. i was on one end and the elder job was on the other. i certainly do not look forward to that passage but i have a hunch i am embarking on it. now before someone thinks i am saying what job experienced was simply a mid life crisis i am not. it was much more traumatic than that. it alsp probably never happened since this is part of the poetry section of scripture i don't think this is literal. though it could be. i guess i'm not saying anything really theological. i'm just reflecting on job's experience and finding myself in his story. lectio. selah. posted by kevin rains on 10/28/06; 6:41:39 am internet ablazin' finally we got out internet squared thanks to bill, our oregon housemate... since it got installed (thanks to aaron and john b) it has had shoddy performance... through no fault of the installers. turns out when we moved all our electronics to one corner of room that was throwing it off. tv, dvd player, dvr, vhs, ... all that stuff in one place with the internet signal in the same place was not a good idea. so bill had the idea to move it across the room. good call. haven't had a problem since (going on several days uninterupted.) that means blogging is back! just in time for my new computer which arrives next week.... and the post below is also new... i'm on a roll! posted by kevin rains on 10/27/06; 5:25:16 am fixed hour prayer: my introduction my introduction to fixed hour prayer was through my grandfather. indirectly. i actually got interested in it after he died. when i was in high school i would go up to his library, which was left just like he left it when he died (grandma’s unstated but very clear demand): greek books and study tools open on his desk, notes in his elegant, fine little writing style, and his book of common prayer. he became episcopalian late in life after being a methodist circuit riding preacher for years. the second floor of grandma’s house was kept shrine-like for years. this book of common prayer intrigued me as a high schooler. it had the softest leather cover i had ever encountered, soft as skin and smoothed with lots of use. it had a gold cross deep set in the cover and his name also in gold at the bottom. but not his full name. they had to abbreviate his first name from george down to “geo.” geo as in earth. it had a matrixesque quality to it long before the movie ever came out. geo. it had, has rather, gilded pages so it shines, shimmers even on bright days or under light. and 2 cloth book marks. i used to think “any book that has 2 book marks must be important.” i later formed another theory: any book with more than one book mark is confusing and complicated. frankly the book intimidated me. written prayers: isn’t that catholic? the only thing i knew about catholics were that one time my friends took me to their church and they put ashes on my forehead and when i got home my mom yelled at me and made me wash my forehead. the book also had songs in it. hymns with real music next to it. clephs and flats and all. but right in the middle it had the entire book of pslams. now these were pure poetry. “blessed is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly… why do the heathen so furiously rage?.. i will lay me down in peace and take my rest… early in the morning will i direct my prayer to you…” poetry. beauty in black and white. and there were some curious things i did not understand like all 150 pslams were broken down into a monthly cycle of morning and evening prayer. and there was this little asterisk after every line. i had no idea what all these secrets meant, there was no key to the map that told me what the symbols meant but i was intrigued. i have carried this little book with me since high school. like a little family treasure. like a secret map or code book handed down from my grandpa hammond to me. i’ve been trying to unlock the mysteries ever since. i’ve been helped immensely along the way by 2 writers i deeply respect: eugene peterson and phyllis tickle. eugene decoded the why’s of the psalms, their centrality for a fully formed prayer life. phyllis showed me how to pray them. posted by kevin rains on 10/27/06; 5:19:46 am also going to.... pilgrim nation conference. the vineyard is doing a conference on fixed hour prayer with phyllis tickle. what is the world coming to? sidebar: dave nixon and i are leading a seminar at this event. prepare to be underwhelmed by my contribution after hearing from phyllis. hey, it was free registration and lodging this way! gimme a break! any time with ken wilson and phyllis is time well spent. let me know if you plan to go... posted by kevin rains on 9/28/06; 5:30:02 am   beloved bloggers ::: aaron klinefelteralan creechbill beanchad canipechris marshalleric keckglenn johnsonjason evansmark palmermike bishopryan hale local favorites ::: skyline chiligraeters ice creamkaldi's (eats, coffee, books)andy's mediterranean (amazing food + hookah)larosa's pizza +old saint george (books)joseph beth booksellersesquire theatre (foreign, indie, art films)the teak thaifountain square (center city fountain/ hang out)sandie brock, massage therapistarnold'smontgomery inn (ribs)mariemont theatreover the rhine >> potato gun>> hookah>> guinness>> internet radio>> paper airplanes >> my patron saint some movies i recommend...>> spellbound >> touching the void>> spring, summer, fall, winter... and spring again >> super size me >> in america>> the castle>> million doallar baby >> * born into brothels *
