prof s j hogan professor s j hogan personal details: address: applied nonlinear mathematics group, department of engineering mathematics, university of bristol, queen's building, university walk, bristol bs8 1tr, united kingdom tel: +44 (0)117-928-7752 fax: +44 (0)117-925-1154 e-mail: s.j.hogan@bristol.ac.uk www: http://www.fen.bris.ac.uk/engmaths/research/nonlinear/staff/sjh.html current research topics research interests some publications research grants applied nonlinear mathematics back to engineering mathematics current research topics nonlinear dynamics and chaos water waves liquid crystals earthquake engineering cellular automata remote sensing applications of mathematics to medicine back to contents research interests: there is a huge untapped reservoir of significant engineering, industrial and other problems where mathematics can be applied in novel and useful ways or which require innovative non-standard mathematics. in response to this need, the applied nonlinear mathematics (anm) group has been set up at bristol. it is situated in the department of engineering mathematics in the faculty of engineering. it is ideally located to form a bridge between mathematics and engineering where lengthy discussions with colleagues in other departments and faculties can be carried out. part of the process involves our weekly nonlinear workshops where problems are presented either solved or unsolved, and which are open to all-comers. the group started from scratch in october 1992 and now has around 12 members my own general area of interest is the application of nonlinear mathematics to problems of scientific, engineering, industrial and medical interest. i was involved in nonlinear water wave research and this interest has continued in the form of industrial consultancies for the defence research agency (dra). my early work focused on the properties of nonlinear gravity-capillary waves, in particular in connection with problems in radar back-scatter. more recently i have worked on the effects of wave-wave interactions on surface wave spectra. in 1984, i broadened my interests considerably by looking at several problems connected with the energy industry. this work was also greatly helped by the realisation that nonlinear dynamics could be useful in this area and that the subject itself could benefit from such an involvement. this has led to a large body of work on the effects of earthquakes on free standing objects, such as ancient monuments or equipment in nuclear installations. my work in this area provided the understanding for previously unexplained experimental results, by producing excellent agreement with theory, in the area of piecewise-linear ordinary differential equations. other successes have included analysing fluidized bed flows in the presence of obstacles. more recently my work has focused on multiple responses of suspension bridgesand instabilities in liquid crystal layers. recent work in this latter area has proved very exciting, with new theoretical work providing excellent agreement with experiments and very recently, using bifurcation theory, the discovery of a new stable static configuration of liquid crystals which may lead to a new type of switching device. other work involves the application of cellular automata methods to heat exchanger design, the business process engineering of the orthopaedic section of the avon health commission and the use of chaos to mask communications signals. back to contents some publications journal publications conference contributions preprints journal publications the effect of damping on rigid block motion under harmonic forcing. proc. roy. soc. lond. a. 437, 97-108 (1992). on the dynamics of a rigid block, tethered at one corner, under harmonic forcing. proc. roy. soc. lond. a. 439, 35-45 (1992). heteroclinic bifurcations in damped rigid block motion. proc. roy. soc. lond. a 439, 155-162 (1992).
