emmis pulls the plug on q101.1's bold morning show after 14 months

emmis communications blew up the comedy/news ensemble morning show on alternative rock wkqx-fm (101.1) after 14 months thursday.
calling "the morning fix" a noble effort that failed, q101.1 bosses tacitly acknowledged that they had no better luck replacing ex-morning star mancow muller than their cbs radio counterparts had replacing howard stern on wckg-fm (105.9), which was forced to abandon its talk format last week.
the latest arbitron quarterly survey showed q101.1 tied for 27th place in mornings with a 1.0 percent share. muller's last full quarter in the spring of 2006 had him eighth with a 3.1 share.
even among q101.1's target of listeners between the ages of 18 and 34, "the morning fix" ranked 16th with a 2.3 share.
forced out after thursday's show were james engel, ginger jordan, dave ball, aemilia scott and michael mccarthy.
the sole on-air survivors of "the morning fix," host alan cox and news/sports anchor jim lynam, begin presiding today over a scaled-down show with a heavy emphasis on music.
"the research we recently completed clearly tells us that our music focus is in sync with audience demand and that our listeners really want to listen to our alternative music in all dayparts," said tisa lasorte, brand manager of q101.1 and co-owned classic rocker wlup-fm (97.9).
marv nyren, regional vice president and general manager of emmis radio chicago, was even more blunt.
"i loved listening [to the show], but i'm not a 26-year-old person," he said. "to the audience we are reaching the rest of the day, we had no presence in morning drive. everything we heard from them was: 'we want the music.' so now the station will be about the music 24/7."
"the morning fix" was the brainchild of mike stern, former vice president of programming for emmis radio chicago. he conceived of it as an ambitious cross between a traditional all-news radio format and "the daily show."
"we think there's a place for smart, topical humor that doesn't talk down to people," stern said before its september 2006 debut. "listeners have been telling us for years that radio sucks, but we keep putting the same thing on the air. well, maybe the listeners are right. we believe it's worth the risk to try something new on radio."
when stern was forced out in a shakeup last february, nyren unequivocally ruled out any changes in q101.1's morning show. then another nine months passed with no improvement.
nyren insisted thursday that the move was dictated solely by research and ratings.dialing:
progressive talk to 820 am
• • chicago's progressive talk radio station is on the move.
as of nov. 26, wcpt will switch from 850 am to 820 am, doubling the station's power and increasing its listening area.
both daytime outlets are owned by chicago-based newsweb corp.
as tipped here last week, the move was prompted by relevant radio's acquisition of wntd-am (950) and the expiration of its deal to air the catholic talk format on wait-am (820).
"with the 2008 elections approaching, we're thrilled to give progressive talk radio an even stronger voice in chicago," said harvey wells, newsweb radio group station manager.
it's a homecoming of sorts for wells, who launched the original sports/talk format of wscr on 820 am in 1992, under ownership of diamond broadcasting.
newsweb plans to move wcpt's call letters to 820 and turn 850 into a time-brokered outlet as wait.
• • an audio tribute to the late jim stagg is running on the web site of chicago's museum of broadcast communications.
it appears on the "from the archives" at www.museum.tv.
stagg, who was a legendary top 40 dj at the former wcfl, died of cancer tuesday at age 72.
• • for veterans day, elgin broadcasting's northwest suburban wrmn-am (1410) will air "tribute to the troops," from noon to 5 p.m. sunday.
hosting the live broadcast will be jeff myers, john prigge and george rawlinson.
