learn to be a city cyclist

if you haven’t tried the fun of bike-riding in paris yet because you’re not confident about cycling in the city, don’t worry, you are not alone. or maybe you’ve made the happy plunge — either on your own velo or on velib –but want to make sure you’re obeying the rules of the road (and avoid those costly moving violations!).
the city of paris, in conjunction with three bicycle associations, is offering workshops on theory and practice of bike-riding in paris. the courses, which will take place from now until december 15 on selected thursdays, fridays and saturdays, are open to everyone over 14 who already knows how to ride a bike. they are offered in french, and are available by pre-registration only.
you can take just the theory lessons, which are free. about 25 people per class.
to take a practice session, you must have already taken one of the theory classes first. practice sessions feature hands-on, real-life riding and last about 2 hours. cost is 2€50 (to cover insurance). space is limited to 10 - 12 participants, so it would be best to sign up early.
you can bring your own bike for the practice sessions; and if you’re not a bike owner, you can have free use of a velib for the course. …more

…more

“1st day of the month and as usual it’s a theme day within the dp community. today’s theme day is… blue! it was recommended to avoid blue skies as it was too obvious so i decided to look for something slightly different. i thought of… la rue bleue (”blue stree”), a street located in the 9th arrondissement - formerly known (before 1789) as rue d’enfer (hell street). …more

paris is an amazing city, full of interesting or well known monuments and expositions. still the place i like best in paris is the saint-germain-des-pres quarter located on the left bank of the river siene. all around it is bordered by les invalides and the tour eiffel to the east, the luxembourg quarter to the south and to the west the latin quarter. this zone was originally a market town where the benedictine monks lived, concentrated around the st.germain abby. the name of the church “saint gremain” comes from a bishop of paris, whose tomb is sheltered there today.
the place took marquerite de valois’s interest as she had a mansion here, so she could overlook the seine. at the end of the 17 century also many statesman lived here and their courtyards are today governmental ministries. …more

as part of its african autumn season, paris’ musée du quai branly presents diaspora - a voyage through africa via the works of today’s cinematographers, choreographers and musicians. all of the creations embody what the african diaspora has brought to the regions of the world that have welcomed it. the exhibition deliberately shows diaspora, not as a loss of identity but on the contrary, as an enriching source of contact with new horizons. …more

if you love design, paris is the perfect place for you. as a matter of fact, the french capital plays host to a variety of design-orientated events which highlight paris’s major role on the design scene. one of the most awaited events is futur intérieur, in january, which is open to the general public and provides a very good approach to contemporary design (parc des expositions de la porte de versailles). from october 8th up to january 27th, you can also visit l’observeur du design, the very hip rendezvous organized by the agency for the promotion of industrial design (apci) which take place at the cité des sciences et de l’industrie. …more

an art installation consisting of an actual one-room hotel offering 1970s-style glamour, artistic cachet and a breathtaking view of the eiffel tower was lifted into place on the roof of a palais de tokyo museum a few days ago. it’s the hotel everland, created by swiss artists sabina lang and daniel bauman, which functions as both a museum exhibit and a room where people can stay overnight. …more

one of my favourite places in paris is la maison européenne de la photograpie, located in the 4th arrondissement, the very heart of the city, not far from the hôtel de ville, the hôtel de sully and musée carnavalet, it’s the main centre for contemporary photographic art. it’s housed inside the hôtel hénault de contobre, a classic mansion built in 1706 which was completely restored by yves lion firm of architects who also added a new wing on the rue de fourcy, nowadays the maison’s main entrance. …more

paris endeavours to be design down to the smallest detail, and many urban infrastructures (street furniture, in particular) have been designed by experts in the field. the layout of the entire route of the recent tramway des maréchaux, in the south of paris, is certainly one of the finest examples of this permanent attention to aesthetics. punctuated by works of top current contemporary artists (christian boltanski, angela bulloch, sophie calle, dan graham, etc.), the entire public space in this area has been thought out by specialists: architects town planners, colourists, lighting engineers… nothing is lacking. as for urban street furniture, the clever dialogue of curves and counter-curves is the work of the much in demand jean-michel wilmotte. …more
